DQ Response Finance - Business & Finance
Discussion Question Response Whether you are pursuing a career in finance or not, understanding the importance of financial principles, interpreting financial reports, and understanding their role in business will help you to be successful. Financial management requires much more than analyzing accounting records, and it is important to note how financial data and calculations are used to support an organization’s work, finances, and decision-making. In this discussion, you will introduce yourself to the class, reflect on your view of finance, and share related experiences. In your initial discussion post, specifically address the following: · Please tell the class about yourself and your educational or professional background. · Have you ever used financial documents (such as tax returns, financial statements, etc.) to make a personal or business decision? Explain. · What terms or concepts come to mind when you think about finance? · What concerns or excites you about the course? In your response posts to at least two peers, consider the following: · Review your peers’ posts and find posts that express different perspectives from your own. How do your perspectives differ? · What advice, resources, or encouragement would you offer to your peers to help them succeed in the course? Be mindful and respectful of your responses, particularly if you are responding to someone who is apprehensive about the course. Andrew Neilson - Hello class,  My name is Andrew Neilson. I’m 51 and retired from the Navy 3 years ago with 26 years of service, stationed on many ships, Iraq, and Afghanistan (current events have been weighing heavy on my mind, while there I supervised a Supply Depot that issued vehicles to the Afghan Army, but I will be ok and I will not let it affect my courses). I am working on completing a bachelor’s degree in Technical Management II with 4 classes left including this one with a goal of completing it by end of the year. My goal is to work in a Project management position once I complete my degree. I currently live in Newport News, Virginia with my wife and adult son (hopefully wife will let him leave soon, but he is independent and lives (pays rent) in the room above our detached 2 car garage). My stepdaughter is currently stationed in Guam with her husband who is in the Navy. While active I was a supervisor of a group of technicians that maintained everything from diesel engines to auxiliary equipment (Air conditioning, pumps, hydraulics, and cranes… etc.) onboard ships. Currently, I work as an Engineering Technician (mechanical) for the federal government working on Navy ship’s equipment as a contractor. I have been in this field for a long time going on 30 years, it’s what I know and do very well in the field.  I've utilized financial papers to make personal decisions in the past. I utilized much of the financial papers to make decisions on purchases, acquire personal and home loans, and, of course, file my taxes. We primarily operated off a budget when I was on active duty, which we utilized to purchase materials for our upkeep. In terms of financial management, I only had a little part to play in determining what I could and could not buy at different periods during the year. When I think about finance, I usually think of money being used to purchase stuff that I require or desire, such as food, clothing, automobiles, my home, and other household items. Capital is required to run a business, including paying workers, paying vendors, leasing office space, purchasing new equipment, and marketing. What interests me most about this course is learning more about how money is used in business, stocks, and other financial sectors. On a personnel level, my current employer has a 401(k) plan, which has been performing well recently, but I'm hoping that the information in this course will help me comprehend it better. Response – Becky Manrodt - Hello everybody! My name is Becky, and I am a nurse from Southeast Pennsylvania. I am married to my best friend and right now we are in the process of adopting our first child, just waiting to be matched! When I am not working or going to school you can usually find me with family, hanging with my fur babies or out in nature somewhere! I am in my final few terms at SNHU where I will be getting my bachelor’s in business with a concentration in industrial organized psychology. I am hoping to change career paths in the coming months and enter the human resource field. The only experience I have with financial documents would be pertaining to the financial statements regarding my personal banking. Aside from that I have minimal experience, but I do look forward to learning! When I think of finance a term that comes to mind would be investments. I believe this comes to mind as lately I have been reading into this topic. I am interested in seeing the different types and gaining a better understanding of what would be best for me. I will admit I am a little intimidated by this course as I do not have much experience or understanding of it. I do believe by using the resources provided and asking questions when needed I will be able to grasp the information. I am excited to learn about financial management and apply it within my new role.
