Welcome to IDS 400! When we approach discussions about diversity, we each come to conclusions with our own perspectives that have been shaped by our experiences. As we begin our first discussion, take a moment to consider what has influenced your ideas of diversity and compare those ideas with what you read in this module’s readings. Then, address the following:
· Introduce yourself to the class by sharing a bit about yourself, such as your preferred name, where you’re from, and your major.
· In your own words, define the term diversity and discuss how it is used or impacts your daily life. How does your definition compare and contrast with those that were presented in the readings?
· What is the influence of diversity on your chosen field of study or future profession? How can you use your understanding of diversity in your professional career?
In response to your peers, provide feedback about their definition of diversity. Compare and contrast your answers and consider the following:
· What are the similarities and differences between your peer’s response and yours?
· How do the two definitions of diversity help to illustrate how diversity and society are intertwined? How can a perspective through the four lenses help to provide a greater understanding of diversity?
JoAnna Hansen - Hello Dr. Mack and fellow classmates,
My name is JoAnna Hansen. I currently live in a small town called Fort Dodge, Iowa working as a full time caregiver for my disabled father. In my spare time, I am usually out and about with my boyfriend doing anything ranging from fishing and kayaking to watching tv or playing computer games. This is my fourth and final year here at SNHU. I am currently majoring in the Human Services program.
The way that I would define diversity in my own words would probably be: diversity: the differences that are amongst a group of people that make them up as individuals. Diversity in my daily life is honestly something that I do not really think about. The main time I feel that it may come up for me is when it comes to the subject of religion which is something that is very important to me. My definition of diversity seems to be right along the same lines as those given in the readings this week.
The influence of diversity in my chosen field of study is very broad. The way I want to go into my field of study is going into advocacy work and counseling. With this type of work I will be interacting with people from all walks of life. The way that I can use the understanding of diversity in my professional career is by understanding that everyone is different in the way they go about their lives and that is okay because at the end of the day we are all human. I look forward to this class and all it has to offer!

Kristina Murphy - Hello Class!
· Introduce yourself to the class by sharing a bit about yourself, such as your preferred name, where you’re from, and your major.
My name is Kristina but I go by Krissy so you all can call me that if you'd like. I'm from central NY but have lived in the Rochester, NY area since I graduated high school. I am majoring in Communications with a concentration in Business Communications.
· In your own words, define the term diversity and discuss how it is used or impacts your daily life. How does your definition compare and contrast with those that were presented in the readings?
Diversity to me is in everything. Whether choosing a different genre of music from my Spotify account each day or asking a client at work if I am pronouncing their name correctly, diversity is there. Diversity means a range of people and what makes them who and how they are. I heard on a podcast recently that your brain can only hold 150 people in it's memory at any given time. The person was saying that they strive to have as much diversity amongst those 150 people as possible because it will help enrich their lives and help them to be enriching to those around them and so on. I really loved that and want to strive for more of that myself. The readings talk about diversity very academically, which makes sense and is good. It also made me a little self conscious to be honest (especially the video) because I am a white, able-bodied, cis-gendered, educated, female from a middle class family and am not considered diverse in most cases nor have I had to think about my identity for most of my life just as the video discusses. The way I think about it compares to the readings in sort of an outsiders perspective I think. I feel sometimes uncomfortable asking or talking about diversity because I think to myself, "I shouldn't speak up because 'my voice' is the one that has been heard all along and I should listen to others and educate myself instead of adding my two cents." I was taught from a young age to be inclusive and appreciate and learn from the differences of those around me but I also grew up in a very small, mostly white town, and so diversity was few and far between and either really highlighted by everyone or completely ignored. After moving to a bigger city as a young adult and meeting all kinds of new people, I really learned a lot about my willingness and comfortability (or lack thereof) with diversity. I have since and in the last few years especially challenged myself and those around me (older conservative family members who consider me a liberal) about acceptance of diversity in our lives and looking to it as a huge benefit and opportunity for growth, instead of as a requirement for quotas or something. Anyway I am really looking forward to this class and the conversations that we will have together. I hope to learn from all of you and that you learn something from me, as well.
· What is the influence of diversity on your chosen field of study or future profession? How can you use your understanding of diversity in your professional career?
I currently work at a large local credit union that is extremely supportive of our Rochester community. Rochester is a very diverse area and my company is making huge strides in diversifying our workforce more and supporting diverse communities. We have a whole project team that focuses on diversity, equity and inclusion. Staff were recently introduced to an educational program called Blue Ocean Brain, that we can take courses for free at work to learn about diversity, equity and inclusion at work, in our personal lives, and in the communities we serve. I also just signed up for another "Munch and Learn" program which is basically a lunchtime book club at work and the new book is called What If? Short Stories to Spark Inclusion & Diversity Dialogue by Steve Robbins. I am excited to read the book along with taking this course and will report back on some things I find! My career goals at work are to become a part of our project management/corporate planning departments and organize and implement projects across the company. Diversity will be integral to this task, as I said before my community and work are diverse places and we are always striving to be as inclusive and supportive as we can be.
