What were the significant contributions of the founders of sociology listed in Chapter One?    Auguste Comte was one of the founders of sociology and coined the term sociology, he also believed that sociology could unite all sciences and improve society. Comte was a positivist who argued that sociology must have a scientific base and objective. He theorized a three stage development of society. Remained at the center of sociology is the difference between social change and social stability.    Harriet Martineau is nocted of her progressive politics. She introduced the feminist sociology perspectives in her writing and addressed overlooked issues like marriage, children, domestic life, religious life, and race relations. She believed that women's lack of economic power contributed to them being independent. She wrote the first book on sociological theory  Karl Marx believed that societies grew and changed as a result of the struggles of different social classes over the means of production. He also predicted that inequalities of capitalism would become extreme and that workers would revolt. Then this would have led to the collapse of capitalism, which would be replaced by communism. His answer to the unfolding of history was a class conflict which was a battle between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat who worked for them.    Hebert Spencer was an English philosopher and biologist of functionalism who grew out of writings. He saw similarities between society and the human body. Argued that the organs of the body work together so it can function properly  just like different parts of society work together to keep society functioning. His contributions to sociology was a conversation of how all societies should be organized.    Georg Simmel was a German art critic who wrote on social and political issues. He took an anti-positivism stance, his work was mainly focused on micro-level theories and it analyzed the dynamics of two-person and three-person groups. His contributions are not really included in the academic history of discipline. Max Weber has power determined by social class and ownership of material sources and by social status and organized resources. He believed that it was difficult to use standard scientific methods to predict the behavior of groups as people hoped to do, human behavior has to be taken into account. He identified rationalization as a major influence in the change from a preindustrial society to an industrial society.   Emile Durkheim was a sociologist famous for his views on the structure of society.  He proved that suiside was involved more than just individual alone. also , proved that suiside rates will be different from chearcistics within a group. Durkheim distinguished sociology from philosophy, psychology, economics, and other social science disciplines by arguing that society was an entity of its own.  W.E.B. Du Bois combined emphasis on analysis of everyday lived experiences with a commitment to investigate power and inequality based on race. He examined social structure which is the pattern interaction of people in social relationships of african american communities.   POST TWO 3) How might the field of sociology look differently today if Harriet Martineau had never translated Comte’s works? · If Harriet Martineau had not translated Comte's writing from French to English, the field of sociology would not be the same as it is today. Comte had an important role in the development of sociology and by closing an essential border to his writings to a single language, the spread of sociology would not have been as influential as it is now. Many who relied on translation would not have been able to discuss their views or ideas and disagreements from comets' work causing a domino effect to the whole rise to the field of sociology.
