This new translation in memory of my grandparents, Abba, Sarah and Nachman, who also vanished into that night M.W. Preface to the New Translation by Elie Wiesel IF IN MY LIFETIME I WAS TO WRITE only one book, this wouldbe the one. Just as the past lingers in the present, all my writ-ings after Night, including those that deal with biblical, Tal- mudic, or Hasidic themes, profoundly bear its stamp, and cannot be understood if one has not read this very first of my works. Why did I write it? Did I write it so as not to go mad or, on the contrary, to go mad in order to understand the nature of madness, the immense, terri- fying madness that had erupted in history and in the conscience of mankind? Was it to leave behind a legacy of words, of memories, to help prevent history from repeating itself? Or was it simply to preserve a record of tCritical Response on “Schindler’s List” by Steven Spielberg. Concepts: Racism, Corruption, Dehumanization, Redemption. In Schindlers List by Steven Spielberg shows us Oscar Schindler, a businessman who along with his wife Emilie Schindler manages to save more than thousands of Polish-Jews from being killed in The Holocaust. Moreover, Schindler manages to save the Jews by employing them in their factory during World War II. At first, we can see Oscar as an opportunistic person where her only goal is to make money through war using Jews as a means to her own interests. Over time, he creates a strong bond with his Itzhak Stern accountant, so his feelings and interests changed greatly. Oscar goes from being an opportunistic and interested person to being the hero of the history where he does his best to save the lives of his workers. The film explores the themes of good and evil, using good German as its main protagonist. Furthermore, it focuses on a stately anomaly: the Nazi who has a change of heart. Schindler is not an honest person, he cheats, he bribes, and uses Jews as slave labor to make money. Additionally, the story follows the evolution of this character to the point where he buys, bribes, and practically sells everything he has to save the lives of thousands of Jews by evolving from Nazi supporter to rescuer and hero. In this story we may notice something unusual. The film is completely black and white however we noticed a little girl in a red coat. To Schindler she represented the innocence of the Jews being slaughtered. The girl symbolizes how America’s military members knew the Holocaust was happening and did nothing to stop it. The story is based on true facts. The authors purpose was for education. The Holocaust has not been discussed very importantly and in many cases is not mentioned. Many knew little about this matter and others denied it. The film and its global impact marked an inflexion point for those of us in the field of education. It opened a window opportunity for continuous learning. Schindlers List conveys a universal message that a persons actions can make a difference in the lives of others. Its a hard movie to watch. The horrors and atrocities experienced by the innocent of that age; it is difficult not to be shocked. The Holocaust is a dark and delicate subject for many. Others believed that it never happened and those who lived it were marked. The film leaves the viewer emotionally exhausted and questioning humanity. Question 1- The girl in the red coat is seen as an important symbol in this film. What does it represent for you? 2- Why do you think that Schindler had a change of heart? why do it?
