Nursing meta paradigm - Nursing

Nursing to me, is an act of selflessness that involves complete care for individuals that are physically, mentally, emotionally and internally unstable. My worldview about religion, spirituality and even cultural elements has always revolved around love and care for myself and everyone around me. As a nurse, I believe that we have to connect with our patients on a deeper level than just carrying out our everyday responsibility to them. That is why I can relate the most with the nursing theory by Jane Watson.
Spirituality elements
I do not see myself as a religious person even though I grew up in a staunch Christian home. However, I am a spiritual person. My world view about spirituality is quite simple. I practice serenity, love and, care for myself and people around me. I believe that every health worker should be able to show empathy for patients because when you understand and share their feelings, it would easier to connect it them. These can be done by studying the patients, stirring up conversations to get to know them better in order to develop a plan of care that would be most suitable for each patient. This would also help me understand the patient’s cultural background better, so that I can be more sensitive in my actions around them. My worldview about spirituality also means that nurses have to be able to instill faith and hope for healing in patients. Being able to keep my and patients’ environment clean and peaceful is another important element is necessary for patient care. I have never worked professionally in the health care sector before, but I have some experiences in family caregiving. My mother in-law lived with I and my husband for about a year after she had a stroke. I put all our differences aside and took good care of her until she gained her Independence. I became her companion and support system. I cleaned her up, fed her, kept her environment clean, told her stories, gave her words of encouragement, listened to her, even though it was very difficult for her then. It used to take her a few minutes to make a sentence or relay an information. I remember the joy I and my husband felt when she started making progress and responding to therapy. This shows that when you consciously and intentionally show patients love and care, they would respond by making progress towards healing.
Cultural elements
I was also brought in a culture that is similar to my spiritual believes and values. My culture taught be that the act of giving and kindness is also love. My country of origin is rich in mineral resources but yet, it harbors the highest number of people living in poverty. I remember that then, some families couldn’t even afford daily meals. There were so many internally displaced people’s camps that lacked government funding. I came from an average middleclass family. We lived in a house that was seated on 5 acres of land. My mother grew crops for personal use in our land. For as long as I could remember up until I moved out of my parents’ house, we visited the internally displaced camps two times a month to share food stuffs gotten from my mother’s farm, feminine hygiene materials she buys in bulk and other materials my father gets from donations in the university where he teaches. We would stay there all day interacting and also listening to their needs to give us an idea of what to bring for our next visit. I remember the smiles on everyone’s faces whenever they see us in the camp. As a future nurse, it is very important for me always show acts of kindness to my patients because you would never know whom you would be uplifting.
Nursing Theory
The nursing theory that is similar to my philosophy of practice and attitude towards patient care is the theory by Jane Watson. She believed caring and healing goes hand in hand. In her theory, she reveals that nurses needs to connect with patients on a deeper level. “ A caring moment involves an action and choice by both the nurse and the other…. If the caring moment is transpersonal, each feels a connection with the other at the spirit level, thus it transcends time and space, opening up new possibilities for healing and human connection at a deeper level than physical interaction.” (Dossey et al., 2015, pp. 485). The major conceptual elements of Watson’s theory includes the caring process or the carative factors, transpersonal caring moments, caring intentionally, and, care-healing ,modalities. (Smith & Parker, 2015) The caring processes includes practicing love and care in patient care settings, ability to be sensitive to patients’ feelings, instillation of hope and faith in patients, creativity in solving problems, transpersonal teaching and learning and, development of truthing relationship with patients. (Smith & Parker, 2015). Our nursing philosophy of practice and approach is similar because both our elements are based on the fact that nursing goes beyond smiling at patients while carrying out the task at hand. We need to intentionally show love and care to patients by having conversations with patients to get to know them better and developing creative ways to carry out nursing duties while taking the patients culture and ideologies into consideration.
Future practice Development
My worldview on love, care and kindness to patients and environment encourages self-growth and development. Caring means you are eager help patients and being eager means you are willing to learn the nursing skills like active listening, observing, speaking, critical thinking, problem solving, time management, ethics, confidentiality and teamwork needed to help them in their healing processes. It will help me to do what it takes to keep my patients comfortable. As a future nurse, I will be touching lives everyday by my actions. The energy I carry around will be transferred to our patients. Therefore, it is very important to that we uplift our patient’s spirit, body, mind and, soul by our acts of love, care and kindness.Art and Science of Nursing – NURS 3371
