In the Week 4 Discussion, you reflected upon a buying experience in which you were persuaded, through marketing efforts, to make a purchase. Now think back to leaders you have known or observed who were particularly good at persuading others toward a shared vision or common goals. What was it about their persuasive approach that made it particularly compelling? Were there ever any negative consequences of them employing persuasion? As you continue to develop your own skills of persuasion, consider how you might use those skills most effectively to make a positive impact through your life and work. In this Discussion, you will consider the risks and benefits of using persuasion to influence others and will share with your colleagues how you might use your own skills of persuasion to bring about positive social change. Identify at least one potential risk of utilizing persuasion in a business environment and how a person can work to overcome those risks. · Explain how you, as a business professional and leader, will use your own skills of persuasion to be an agent of positive change.Business Skills for Good: Persuasion © 2021 Walden University, LLC. 1 Business Skills for Good: Persuasion Program Transcript [MUSIC PLAYING] FEMALE SPEAKER: Think about the last time you heard a compelling argument or impassioned speech that made you reconsider or perhaps even change your mindset about a particular topic or idea. What was it about the speakers delivery that challenged your thinking? Part of what compelled you may have been there knowledge about the topic supported with facts and appropriate details, but you may also have been drawn in by how they presented the information, which may have included the use of emotion, personal stories, and other tactics that appealed both to your intellect, as well as to your feelings. In other words, the speaker was probably effective at using their skills of persuasion. Of the many skills that are useful to have in business, persuasion is especially critical. Persuasion is defined as the act or process of moving others toward a particular position belief or course of action. Often misunderstood as being associated with manipulation or with twisting information for ones own gain, the art of persuasion in business is actually about using your skills and influence to help others and to further your organizations mission and goals. Of course, as you develop these skills, it is always important to remain self-aware about your own motivations when persuading others to ensure that youre working toward the right goal and meeting the needs of your team and/or your organization. Effective persuasion at its core is about successful communication. And that includes not only being able to convince someone else of an idea, but also about understanding the concerns and motivations of others. Leaders, who have developed their skills of persuasion, are often effective at inviting others to join in on a common vision or goal and guiding them toward a sense of shared responsibility for their work. In doing so, they inspire and support their teams to produce quality outputs, execute on established objectives, and innovate. Another important aspect of persuasion is that of thought leadership or influence combined with expertise fueled by a solid understanding of their organizations mission and strategic goals. Persuasive leaders guide others to consider new ideas, to see possibilities and perspectives they might not have otherwise, including opportunities for effecting positive social change.
