Theories in nursing are organized, knowledge-based thoughts that define the range of nursing practice. There are four major theories of nursing; Grand theory of care, the theory of universality and diversity of care designed by Madeleine Leininger, and the theory of human care pioneered by Jean Watson (McFarland, 2017). Today’s discussion will discuss the theory of expanding consciousness. Margaret Newman finds that the theory of expanding consciousness states that each individual in whatever situation, regardless of how hopeless or disordered they may seem, belongs to a broader process through which consciousness is expanded. Theory of expanding consciousness and how it applies to our healthcare society This theory is being applied to our healthcare society today, where it lays the groundwork for nursing and assists nurses in understanding their role and purpose in healthcare settings. This theory was restored by concern for those whose disease or disability is not possible to cure. This theory is also used in the development of knowledge (Petiprin, 2020). We must revisit this theory whenever we need to rename what we observe or explain relationships between concepts. As a result, nurses find more results in their work when they use and apply the nursing theory. This theory helps the nurse to realize the disease process, its recovery, and its prevention. Newmans approach of expanding consciousness can be applied in a healthcare society because it brings about caring interventions. This theory is also valuable for patients with cancer as nurses will relate to them and attend to them. Theories on how they influence the nursing profession to provide care to a diverse population Nursing theories significantly impact nursing practices; they give a basis for which nursing is practiced and mean that patients receive the best care (Petiprin, 2020). Additionally, the theories of nursing are fundamental in aiding nurses to assess patients carefully. Similarly, these theories consider discovery as a basis for meditation hence help resolve several conflicts in the nursing field. Besides, the theories provide nurses with a framework to make decisions. Theories in nursing are pivotal in assisting nurses in understanding what their roles are within healthcare settings. According to McFarland (2017), Madeleine Leininger’s theory talks about cultural care. Diversity refers to the difference found between different cultures, norms, and beliefs (McFarland, 2017). In the event where medical practitioners recognize the differences that exist within their pool of patients, then a competitive cultural competition can be forged. This will lead to enhanced communication between caregivers and patients, making them feel safe and motivating them to dedicate even more of their time to the patients. In conclusion, theories of nursing associated with the expansion of consciousness are very central to many healthcare settings today. Our nursing population to provide care to a diverse population of patients. In its application, Newman’s theory of expanding consciousness helps reframe the thinking about healthcare providers to help understand patients’ needs as a whole. The theory allows medical doctors and nurses within the healthcare sector to generate knowledge and understand their role in providing health services. In addition, the theory helps healthcare providers understand and know why they are in the healthcare sector and better understand what they do in the hospital settings (Newman, 2020). This theory also helps understand and recognize patient-as-person entails appreciating the self-perception and expression of an illness and realizing that their disease is unique. In this case, applying the theory enables the healthcare providers to understand the pattern of patients or individuals.  The HEC emphasizes all aspects of the patient or individuals as cultural, social, emotional, spiritual, and physical. The theory allows healthcare providers to understand the illness better alongside other factors of the patient or individual. In this case, nurses can understand their patients as a person, such as other aspects such as culture and social aspects (Newman, 2020). Therefore, nurses can deal with diverse populations of individuals or patients because they can understand patients under their care.  Please choose either Madeleine Leininger’s or Jean Watson’s theory and explain how their theory would apply closely to the patient population or working environment that you currently serve or work with. For this case, the paper explores the theory of culture care diversity and universality by Madeleine Leininger. The theory argues that care to patients is the essence of nursing care and is very important to healing and curing. In this case, patients’ experiences patients care from their nurses who complement their beliefs and ways of life. They will comply with the treatment, and care is more effective when care is congruent with their cultural beliefs. Therefore, understanding and observing the diversity of patients daily is essential in making the treatment becoming effective (McFarland & Wehbe, 2017). Patients have the choice to get the care based on their beliefs and cultural values. This involves finding oneself and discovering greater purpose in life, as well as connecting with different people and the world in new dimensions (Pharris, M., 2010). Newman’s theory has grown to include the health of all people, whether experiencing disease or not. This theory has helped nurses in our modern healthcare setting understand each patient’s intrinsic pattern in relation to their environment (Melnyk et al., 2019). This helps nurses understand the disease, the recovery process, and its prevention.   Madeleine Leininger’s Theory  The theory of culture care diversity and universality developed by Leininger is centered on the fact that different cultures have varied caring patterns and different values and beliefs concerning illness and disease. This theory seeks to offer supportive, facilitative and enabling nursing decisions tailored to fit the patients, group, or communitys beliefs and values (Smith & Parker, 2020). This theory helps nurses provide culturally compatible care to diverse patients without contradicting their patients’ values and beliefs. Leininger’s model developed into transcultural nursing whereby the nurse and patient work together to plan, design, and implement a care mode that ensures culturally compliant nursing care ( Tappen, R., 2015). This theory applies to my current working environment since we deal with diverse patients from different cultures and walks of life every day. The nurse would be able, to determine the mental condition of a patient and then create an environment of his comfort level (Alamaha, Farland, 1997). Ethnohistory would help nursing staff, to collect knowledge about the cultural background of a patient. As we know that, Miami is a multicultural city that’s why it would be difficult, to determine the ethnicity of a patient. So, Ethnohistory will provide sufficient knowledge about the cultural background of a client. Ethnohistory of a client would help the practitioners, to identify that either problem is inherent or, due to other environmental conditions. Also, it would help, to understand the requirements of a client. Kinship and Social Factors would help the nursing department that, in what manners client wants to get care. These factors provide information that how his family takes care of him when he gets sick. This would enable the staff, to take care of a patient in the same manners as the way his family does (Kerlin,2010).  Cultural Values helps to identify the cultural norms and values of a client. Like Brazilians do not eat food by hand, they use knife and fork. While providing food to a patient, certain cutlery should be provided to him. Also, Brazilian use to communicate verbally and through their gestures, they do not like to touch or get touched by the next person. So, these values would make it clear for a nurse, to how to deal with a person according to his cultural values. Religious/Spiritual/Philosophical Factors, People belongs to different cultures have different religious beliefs like Muslims believes that a patient will get well soon through often prayers. Similarly, other cultures have their own beliefs. For example in Miami, immigrants from minorities, i.e. African slaves are Muslim. So, these religious beliefs would allow the nurses, to incorporate their care services, on the basis of client’s religion. Technological, factors include the latest diagnostic machinery and equipment. Usually, technology does not have a huge impact on cultural perspective. But, it may help the nurse to discover that either patient is dependent on any machine to remain healthy or not (Alamaha, Farland, 1997). Economic, factors have a great impact in nursing departments. Money is a source of survival. Client’s opinion about money would make it easy to discover that, at what extent the client can afford the care, and what level of care would be reasonable for him, according to his economic conditions. Like, Africans are not too much rich, they may be cannot afford the high cost of care. This economical identification would avoid financial issues regarding care and treatment (Betancourt, 2015). Political and Legal Factors inquires about the political and legal issues of a client’s culture, which may affect the welfare of his family or himself. Educational, factors, determines the sophisticated thoughts of the client regarding illness and care procedures. Special Requirements regarding care, according to his educational information. Nursing staff would try, to improve their care services according to the educational requirements of the patient (Kerlin,2010). Language and Communication, factors help to understand the language requirement of a client, on the basis of his culture. Like, some people cannot speak English except their native language. So, the nursing department would train their staff, which will make it easy for experts to communicate with the patient. It would discover that, what a client requires language and communication style. Professional and Generic Care Beliefs and Practices, would identify the care needs of a patient. Information of the client, regarding home remedies and care practices, which he expects to imply on him. Any special treatment or homemade remedy, which helps in fast recovery. Hospitals can adapt it for the better care of patients (Alamaha, Farland,1997) General and Specific Factors, provides information about the opinion of a client, related to the nursing profession. This information reveals that what culture and values influence him to get care, and other information that in what manners, he wants the nurses to take care of his health according to his culture (Kerlin,2010).
