NAME COURSE: ENG 101 INSTRUCTOR DATE Dennis Congo’s article ‘The Five Types of Studying’ is an article that is aimed at addressing learners to drive them towards maximizing the effectiveness of studying. The article consists of a list of five studying methods that are suggested to be the key to effective learning for students. The article does a listing of studying purposes that help a learner to establish what type of learning they can use so as to attain maximum effectiveness. Maximum reading effectiveness as stated in the article consists of the ability to grasp the content and be able to remember the content of what one went through as well. ‘The Five Types of Studying’ is an article that tries to be of help to learners of all categories of studying. Different learners have different purposes of engaging in learning and this calls for different types of learning for each individual purpose. As stated by Congos in the article, ‘this is a great resource for a handout to help students understand that studying involves more than rereading, and rereading, and rereading’ (Congos, 2016). Te statement is evidence that it has a purpose to help learners to maximize their outcome form the resources they invest in studying. These resources invested range from the time used to read, personal effort applied in learning and in other times financial investment. In this article, Congos was hoping to assist learners to adopt studying types that would enable them to gain the best possible advantage from reading. Congos is hoping to get the learner to view learning from a different point other than just carrying books around and looking at them from time to time. He aims at helping learners to have a plan for studying. This is for example achievable by the use of a perception statement at the start of the article, ‘This is a great resource for a handout to help students understand that studying involves more than rereading, and rereading, and rereading’ (Congos, 2016). This statement informs learners that there is more to reading that just reading over and over again. He provides the purpose of reading as understanding and being able to remember. Congos goes on to state the advantages and possible benefits that one can enjoy for reading his article. ‘Using the 5 types has the advantage of keeping studying time to a minimum to earn whatever grades for which one chooses to work.’ (Congos, 2016) From this statement its clear that a learner gets an anxiety to know how the article can do what is stated in the statement. It creates a perception in the readers mind that there is something that they have been missing in their whole studying process and that they can achieve by going through his article. The article however faces a challenge in convincing some readers that it provides the best studying formula. This is because many people have read without this knowledge and have managed to shine in their studies despite. This therefore tends to get some people to question the effectiveness of the techniques discussed by the article that make sit better than any other that they have come across previously or techniques that they have individually learnt and adopted. Congos however provides more persuasion towards believing in his article by stating that, ‘if lack of knowledge about the subject matter has held your test and final course grades down, maybe its because you havent been using All 5 Types of Studying in your learning’ (Congos, 2016). By this statement therefore he creates more confidence for the article and calls for a read. Congos in his article uses the logos appeal to get the trust of his readers as illustrated in his statement that, ‘Many learners dont realize that there are five types of studying needed for academic success. As a result, many learners are not able to use their full potential to learn and earn higher grades’ (Congos, 2016). He gives reference and solid examples of real situations rather than directions get his point across and believable. Using the logos appeal in the first place does indicate that the writer has enough power of knowledge to provide to the reader to confine into their article. The explanations given in the article are far more convincing and therefore the article is bale to capture maximum attention and minimum doubt. In the article, Congos does examine his aspects of writing well because he manages to cover every part of his audience, who are learners. He does not only address top performance but also effective learning. He presents the five studying types which can be best termed as purposes of studying which he states as gathering information, learn information, to check learning or to evaluate oneself, to refresh and to improve learning skills. These purposes of learning provide a perfect guide towards attaining a perfect and suitable studying type for each learner. He also addresses some study practices which tend to yield minimum results towards excellent performance. In conclusion, I can state that the Dennis Congos’ article, ‘The Five Types of Studying’ was an academic success. This is confirmed by the way he covers his audience and in the way he presents his ideas. They are given solid argument to achieve maximum convincing power to gain the reader’s attention and trust.
