This stage consists of the steps of observing, listening, asking, reading, collecting, comparing, contrasting, relating and analysing information so that the team is prepared. Incubation is the stage where the team takes time away from the task or problem, and allow their subconscious minds to operate. Wallas believes that this stage is important as many of the censors imposed by our conscious minds are relaxed during incubation. This results in the team being able to contemplate and consider a wide range of options or solutions. Illumination is the stage where the insight comes into existence. This is the stage where there is an ‘Ah Ha’ or ‘Eureka’ moment as the original idea comes into the team’s consciousness. Verification is the stage where the idea is tested and applied. There may be some iterations here if the idea falls short. The team might revisit some of the earlier stages and prepare again and/or take more time to incubate.
