ENG 122 Writing Plan Guidelines and Rubric
Overview: The writing plan will guide you through the first steps of drafting the critical analysis essay that is the final project for this course.
Constructing Your Writing Plan: To complete this assignment, do an active reading of your selected article using the analysis techniques mentioned in Module
Two. Be sure to take notes. Next, you will make a plan for writing your critical analysis essay.
As you work on the writing plan, remember to refer to the rubric to make sure you're fulfilling each aspect of the assignment.
Prompt: For this writing plan, you will analyze your selected reading and state an opinion or evaluation about the author’s claim. You will then use evidence or
key points from the selected reading to back up your evaluation.
Each response should be one fully developed paragraph in length (5–8 sentences). Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
1. What is the author's claim in the selected reading? In other words, what do you believe the author wants their audience to learn or understand better
once they’ve finished reading?
2. Have you identified new key points that the author uses to support their claim in the selected reading? If so, include them here. If not, restate the key
points you uncovered in your Writing Notes assignment and explain why the key points from that assignment have remained the same, even after
conducting an active reading of the article.
3. Describe the author’s target audience: What group (or groups) of people is the author trying to reach with their message?
4. What choices does the author make in their writing to connect with this target audience?
5. Explain your evaluation of the author’s claim: Is the claim strong or weak? What evidence or key points from the writing best support the author’s
claim? If you found the claim to be weak, explain why the evidence or key points provided did not effectively support the author’s claim.
Rubric
Guidelines for Submission: Save your work in a Microsoft Word document with double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins. Then,
check your writing for errors. Once you have proofread your document, submit it via the Assignment: Writing Plan link in Brightspace.

Context of the Amy Tan’s ‘Mother Tongue’, her style, purpose, and tone
The immediate context of the text is the author's experience upon being nurtured by a mother who faced the great challenge of communicating in fluent English; her mother's weakness made the author manifest various feelings that affected her comfortability. The text aims at implicating the need to impress all people besides their disadvantages based on the relevant society’s provisions. Amy's tone in the article tends to be remorseful, defensive, and angry. She deploys the aspect of style in the article significantly; for instance, she interacts with her audience directly; “You should know that my mother’s expressive command of the English language belies how much she really understands” (Tan, 2003 p.299).
How will a keen analysis of the Amy Tan’s claim and the structure of the compilation help in learning more about the text?
Amy Tan’s purpose of advocating for acceptance of individuals who have the challenge of being affected by their mother tongues as her mother is presented effectively in the text by her tone of defensiveness. Her approach of engaging her audience directly shows her strong desire to express the need to accept victims of mother tongue in society.
Is the author’s writing effective in achieving their purpose?
Amy Tan's work significantly proves to be effective enough in expressing the need to accommodate those affected by their mother tongue, especially when in a different society. She has perfected this by showing the troubles that her mother underwent due to her ‘broken English’ and how that condition affected her emotionally (Tan, 2003 p.36)

1 article and author
I selected "mother tongue." The author is Amy Tan
2 the author's purpose and how I arrived at my decision
The author's purpose of this piece is to educate people that it is okay to be diverse, and no matter how different someone seems, they should be treated with respect. Our intelligence is judged by how we speak, which is why Amy's mother was disrespected by bank services, department stores, and restaurants. They even pretended like she had not been told because of her broken English. Tan could speak English, but her mother couldn't. The author explains her mother's challenges as an immigrant, which included people being rude to her and disrespectful. Her mother was discriminated against because of having imperfect English. Even though Tan could speak good English, she always spoke broken English with her mother. Speaking in broken English brought a connection and a strong bond between her and her mother. Therefore this shows that people can be different, but this does not mean they should be mistreated. People should even be able to make it comfortable for diverse people. For example, the way Amy spoke to her mother in broken English just to be accommodating.
3 key points that support the purpose
To begin with, Amy speaking to her mother in broken English to show that she can try to accommodate others by making them comfortable. Even when amy is speaking with an audience in the Joy Luck Club about her book, she notices that her mother is in the audience. She realizes that the way she was talking, her mother will not hear and change. She also realized that her teachers were constantly pushing her towards maths and science. Even though she was good at English, the teachers always encouraged her to take math. She then decides to take English because she believes in English; there are more ways to express oneself, unlike maths. Finally, amy used to pick calls for her mother and impersonate her. She was fluent in English, but she could speak broken English to show people that even if one is not like the rest, they should not be discriminated against. The author even acknowledges the impact of the mother tongue on her life. She says it is the mother tongue that shaped the way she saw things.
4 audience and challenges faced communicating the purpose.
Tan's audience is the critics of her mother tongue and the people who discriminate against others for being different. She also targets the people who are faced with this problem to show them that it is normal to be different and not be embarrassed because they are different. The author faces challenges in communicating the purpose because many people are judged according to how they speak. It is therefore difficult to convince people that someone can have the worst English but still be intelligent. For example, her mother was a stockbroker even though she had a broken English.
