KRISITI’S POST: An instance where I experienced a nonverbal communication topic was when I was in high school. There was a foreign exchange student, named Merick, that came from Yugoslavia who my sister and I became friends with. At first, he was very reserved and did not speak to people, so this caused some of the kids at school to think he was being unsocial or rude.  Once my sister and I got to know him, we understood that he was not trying to be unsocial or rude, but instead it was his custom that you do not speak unless you were spoken to. My sister and I became good friends with Merick and learned that he was a very social person that loved to make people laugh. Before he left to go back to his country he taught us a lot about his culture, so whenever I hear about Yugoslavia it makes me remember him. GOBE’S POST: While reading the chapter, I have learned of nonverbal communication as well as non-verbal communication codes. I believe I have been around many different religions and cultures throughout my career. When I was overseas, it was different, from the way people were greeted to the dress codes. We were told not to look at the women in their faces, although not sure of the reason. (No disrespect intended). Personal space is a big deal. I have coworkers and friends that are of different religions, have different views on things. I also had a buddy of another race that I became good friends with just by the same taste of music. I hate to say I cant really think of anymore. At this time, this is all I have.    MIRACLE’S POST: I’ve been around a lot of different cultures, but at times, I didn’t recognize some of the characteristics that I liked or didn’t like as a different culture characteristic. I’m not sure I would be able to accurately name the cultures, but I can do my best to describe the characteristics. I also have kept in mind that a lot of these cultures are subcultures within American culture so there is definitely overlap with it being from a particular culture and American culture. I’ve interacted with Vietnamese people and noticed that at times, eye contact is not always desirable. I have had multiple conversations and at times, I’m talking and looking directly at them, and they are not doing that in return. I’m not sure if it was due to us doing things while we talk or if it was a cultural difference. I have also interacted with Nigerian people and noticed that they can be very expressive in their hand gestures and facial expressions. I can also see some relation in how people of African heritage also so this. At first, these 2 examples rubbed me the wrong way, but as I began to notice it was often and looked into the reasoning behind it, I learned that it’s not me, it’s a cultural difference. I’m accepting of that and continue to interact with people from these two cultures. I also like that I can find similarities in cultures that are different than mine, like how both Vietnamese people and Nigerian people share the importance of family and community values.
