week 8 discussion - Psychology
Scientific evidence is based on observations, but media accounts often rely on inferences, conclusions or interpretations rather than evidence. The purpose of this discussion is for you to use critical thinking skills in evaluating information that is provided by the media.
Part I. Evaluate the article: "Drinking wine before bed now officially makes you skinny"
Week 8 Discussion Article.pdf
Writing in APA style, please answer the following:
a. What is the major claim made in the article?
b. What evidence does the author present to support the claim?
c. Is the evidence based on observations or inference?
d. Does the author identify the source (scientists) or organizations? Do they include a reference to a peer-reviewed journal?
e. Is the argument for the claim logical?
f. Does the author rely on emotional or objective statements? Identify specific examples of language used in the article to demonstrate this.
g. Based on the information presented in the article, would you accept or reject the claim either entirely or tentatively?
h. Does it pass the CRAP test? (see attached article)
CRAP test.docx
i. Finally, what are some ways you can go about finding the original source(s) mentioned in the article?
Through this exercise, you will learn to:
Identify psychology research in the news.
Critically analyze the presentation of that research (and importantly the RESULTS) in news articles.
Consider the news source, and how the source may influence the manner in which research is presented.
Identify and distinguish between "real" and "fake" news sources

Library Evaluating Sources: The CRAP Test*
Why do we value some forms of information above others? Because not all information is created equal. In this age of abundant information,it's common to use what's most easily available. That's not an acceptable path when you're doing research for college courses, and it won't serve you well when choosing information for personal use either.
Before you use information for any purpose, you should evaluate it. Would you take the word of a stranger on the street about something that really mattered to you? Probably not. So, why take the word of a stranger on the Internet? What do you know about the person or organization who put that information on the Web? Are they an authority on the topic? Do they have an agenda to promote? It's important to get inthe habit of asking questions like these. Fortunately, there's a tool designed to helpyou do just that: The CRAP Test.
» It's a good idea to apply The CRAP Test to material no matter where you find it: that's what it means to be a critical user of information.
» The library offers quality academic resources that are carefully selected to meet your
academic needs. They are much likelier to pass The CRAP Test and meet your instructor's
expectations than resources you find on the Web. This saves you time!
» Library resources, by and large, are part of the hidden Web. They rarely appear in search
results from Google or other search engines. The main reason they're hidden is that they're
subscription resources, i.e.,we pay a lot of money (some of which comes from your tuition dollars) to make them available. They're not just free for anyone to use. That's why you have to login with your StarlD before you can access them.
» The simple search box for Google, Bing,Yahoo, etc. is deceptive. You can spend a lot of time
sifting through low quality search results before you find something suitable for academic purposes. An educated search of a library database will give you relevant, reliable results
much faster.
» Even if you get lucky and find a link to an article on the Web that meets your needs and your
instructor's expectations, chances are you'll hit a pay wall before you'll be allowed to read it. A
single article usually costs upwards of $40. Remember, the resources the library purchases for you to use are expensive.
» So,be smart. Save time and money. Use high quality information. If you need help, ask your
instructor or a librarian.

· Does the author have expertise in this field?
· Who is the publisher?
· Has the publisher published other works in the same field?
r
Purpose:
· Why was this source created? To educate? To entertain? To persuade readers to adopt a point of view?
