Introduction
Gender diversity is the equitable representation of people of different genders either in the work place, political positions, or even society leadership.
It is also known as equitable ratio of men to women.
Not only is gender diversity a human rights requirement, but it is also an essential foundation for a prosperous and sustainable society.
Society has socially constructed roles for men and women. The issue of diversity seeks to challenge these norms and ensure there is gender equality across all sectors.
Gender diversity can be defined as the equitable representation of people of different genders either in spaces such as the workplace, political appointments, and society leadership. It can in simple terms be referred to the equitable ration of men to women. This issue is of interest since it is not only a human right requirement, but also an essential foundation upon which a prosperous and sustainable society is built. It is due to the socially constructed roles for men and women that bring about gender inequality. Diversity seeks to address these societal norms that bring about gender inequality.
2
Social Issue Related to Diversity- 1
For a long period of time, men dominated the society .
Women opportunities were limited, and there existed no safe spaces where they could voice their concerns.
These gender inequalities have placed women at a disadvantaged position, in trying to live a fulfilling life.
Areas of inequality range from lack of access to formal education, confinement to undertaking low level and less paying jobs, and the denial of the right to make choices about their bodies.
Since time immemorial, men have dominated the society. This leads to women having limited opportunities and a lack of a safe space where they could voice their concerns. As a result of these gender inequalities, women have ended up at a disadvantaged position, trying to live a fulfilling life. Areas of inequality range from the lack of access to formal education, working in low level and less paying jobs and denial of the right to make choices about their bodies.
3
Social Issue Related to Diversity-2
To understand the origin of this social issue, we look at how women were treated in some prominent ancient cities.
In Mesopotamia, there was a penalty for women requesting for divorce. Only men could grant one.
In Greece, women were under their guardianship of their father or male relative until marriage, after which their husbands took over.
In Athens, women would only access basic training on housekeeping and other minor informal skills.
In Rome, women had no public roles. They served men.
To understand this social issue better, we look at how prominent ancient cities treated their women. In Mesopotamia, there was a punishment for women who sought for divorces, since it was only permitted for men. In Greece, women were under the guardianship of their father or a male relative, until marriage, after which their husbands took over. In Athens, women would only access basic training on housekeeping and other minor informal skills. In Rome, women had no public roles and were regarded as servants for men.
4
Impact of Gender Inequality on Society
Gender inequality affects everyone, but women and girls are the most disadvantaged.
Gender stereotyping affects children’s sense of self from a very young age.
In adolescents, gender stereotyping affects their behavior, ambitions, choices, and relationships.
In adults women live a life of less quality due to reasons such as discrimination and less pay for same work as men.
There is less cohesion in an unequal society (Khambule et al., 2017) and people’s well-being is poor.
In general, gender inequality affects everyone in the society. However, women and girls are more disadvantaged. Analyzing through the various age groups, you realize that in children, gender stereotyping affects their sense of self from a very young age. In adolescents, their behavior, ambitions, choices and relationships are affected. In adults, women fail to thrive and live a fulfilling life due to discrimination and less remuneration for the same work done by men. More importantly, there is less cohesion in an unequal society and the well-being of its members is poor.
5
How Society Impacts Gender Inequality
A society’s culture, values and norms have a significant contribution to gender inequality.
The level of reinforcing these cultural norms promote a continuous cycle of male dominance.
It is unfortunate how a majority of societies value women less compared to men, and condition them to be submissive and subordinate to their male counterparts.
Men are believed to better handle their emotions hence deserving of senior positions (Brescoll and Victoria, 2016).
Lack of adequate policing and legal protection laws in favor of women leaves them exposed .
A society’s culture, values, and norms have a significant contribution to gender inequality. It is the level of reinforcing of these cultural norms that promotes a continuous cycle of male dominance in any society. Majority of societies value women less compared to men and condition them to be submissive and subordinate to their male counterparts. This is one of the reasons for the common assumption that women are overly emotional and only men are capable of handling their emotions better, making them deserving of senior positions in the workplace. Also, a lack of adequate policies and legal protection laws have left women exposed to gender inequalities.
6
Individual Framework on Perception
Analyzing this social issue has made me understand that gender equality is a human right.
It is also important to understand gender equality for economic prosperity.
Societies that value men and women in equal measure are more safer and healthier.
Most importantly, gender equality prevents violence perpetrated against women and girls.
This analysis is a wake up call to mobilize institutions to formulate policies that ensure equal representation.
Analyzing this social issue has caused me to realize that gender equality is a human right. It is also clear that for the growth and prosperity of a nations economy, the issue of gender equality should be addressed. Additionally, societies that value men and women equally are more safer and healthier. Most importantly, gender equality helps prevent violence perpetrated against women and girls. Lastly, this is a wake up call to mobilize institutions to formulate policies that ensure equal representation.
7

IDS 400 Final Project Part Two Guidelines and Rubric
Overview
This course explores diversity and its impact on the world around us. Diversity influences society, and society influences diversity, creating a feedback loop
between them. We will critically analyze this feedback loop in this course through social, historical, and theoretical approaches to diversity as well as the four
general education lenses: history, humanities, natural and applied sciences, and social sciences. Each of these four perspectives allows us to better understand
the construction of diversity and its interrelation with society. From this enhanced understanding, you will be equipped to draw connections between popular
culture and your personal and professional lives, helping you to become a better-informed citizen who can make a positive difference in the world.
Issues and events in diversity have a pervading influence on many aspects of society, and how they are dealt with requires diverse knowledge and perspectives to
investigate and change. The purpose of this project is to examine a specific issue or event in diversity and how that event or issue impacts individuals and society.
You will do this through the development of a critical analysis portfolio and a presentation in which you will demonstrate your ability to think critically,
investigate, and communicate clearly. These skills are often necessary to achieve personal and professional goals across many disciplines.
In this assignment, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following course outcomes:
Analyze the relationships among culture, diversity, and self by investigating their influence on one’s discipline of study or chosen profession
Integrate interdisciplinary approaches for determining how issues of diversity affect modern societies in both personal and professional contexts
Describe the cultural and social influences on the development of personal identity by employing appropriate research strategies
Recommend strategies for overcoming obstacles in diversity to meet personal and professional goals
Articulate informed viewpoints on how to ensure cultural responsiveness in personal and professional contexts using effective communication skills
Assess the challenges of overcoming issues in diversity through the incorporation of diverse perspectives and viewpoints informed by relevant literature
and peer experiences
Prompt
For Final Project Part Two, you will develop a multimedia presentation in which you will have a chance to reflect on what you have learned about your issue or
event, yourself, and society through analyzing your event or issue’s impact on diversity. You will also be able to apply your communication skills and integrate
multimedia elements to communicate your message to an audience
In developing this presentation, you will be able to use your analyses from Final Project Part One as a starting point. The reflective nature of this activity prompts
you to dig deeper and consider the implications posed by the critical analysis of your issue or event in diversity. How does studying diversity affect how you
understand yourself as well as the world around you? You’ll also be challenged to incorporate a dash of creativity to enhance your message.
1
Multimedia Presentation: For the second part of the project, you will create a multimedia presentation that incorporates audio narration and visuals to
articulate how critically analyzing your issue or event in diversity impacts your own framework of perception and ability to constructively engage in society.
PowerPoint: You are required to include a combination of text and visuals in order to support your PowerPoint presentation. Use the Check File Compatibility
With Earlier Versions and Are You Having Video or Audio Playback Issues? resources to help you check compatibility between versions of Office. Also, follow the
instructions on the Microsoft Support page to compress your presentation into a zipped file. You may upload a zipped file when submitting this assignment.
Reducing the size of the PowerPoint presentation file by compressing it makes it easier for your instructor to download and grade.
Microphone: While it is not necessary to purchase a microphone for this project, you will need to have access to a microphone to record the narration of the
presentation. You can use the external microphone of your device, a set of earbuds, or a borrowed microphone from a friend. This assignment is graded on the
content of the narration and not the quality of the recording.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
I. Issue/Event: For this section of your presentation, you will introduce the issue or event and how it relates to issues of diversity and any of the topics that
have been discussed in the course.
