For a planetary explorer, one of the most important types of maps is a geological map. A geological map shows what types of terrains or rocks one is likely to encounter on a planetary surface, and in what order they were created. Since our ability to go to different planetary surfaces is limited, planetary scientists must do most of their exploring and mapping by studying images from spacecraft. I’m sure you can look at a typical picture of a planetary surface and say “That’s Mars” or “That’s the Moon”. A planetary scientist can take that same picture and interpret what is there and reconstruct the history of that surface. Recognizing various landforms on spacecraft images and being able to determine their relative ages is an important component of this class. The identity of various landforms can be ascertained by comparing known images with what you see, while the relative ages of the various features can be determined by using the Law of Superposition, first introduced in the seventeenth century by Nicholas Steno. Steno’s law laid the theoretical groundwork for stratigraphy, a concept we will rely upon heavily in this class. Stratigraphy is the study of rock layers and their layering, or more importantly, when particular rock layers were laid down relative to other layers. The main idea being that the oldest layers or formations on a surface are overlapped by younger layers or formations. The bottom feature had to be there before the subsequent features could form on top of it. Or put more simply, you can determine relative ages of layers/features because young formations overlap old formations. Learning Goals In this lab your group will act as a team of planetary scientists and interpret what you see by creating a geological map and writing a description of a selected region of the Moon and as best you can, use the concept of stratigraphy to determine the relative ages of the features on your map. Then, based on your analysis of the surface features, decide as a team where in your image would be the best place to land a manned lunar mission. Our materials will be the same primary data the Apollo program scientists used when they were first trying to both understand the lunar surface and find interesting spots to land for the Apollo missions. The photographs you will use are from the Lunar Orbiter missions that preceded Apollo in 1966 and 1967. 10/16/2021 L2 Activity: Geological Mapping https://canvas.uw.edu/courses/1476342/assignments/6650825 2/7 Procedure Step 1: Select an interesting Lunar Orbiter image thumbnail from the following website: https://www.lpi.usra.edu/resources/cla/maps/thumbs/ (https://www.lpi.usra.edu/resources/cla/maps/thumbs/) Please do not select the image in the example below! The following example should give you some idea as to what your map should look like and what well be looking for while grading. Below is an image of the lunar surface I chose from the Lunar Orbiter thumbnails: Step 2: Once you have decided on an image, you will reproduce the image as a sketch. If you are into art, heres your chance to have some fun! If you are one of those folks who are lucky if they can sketch a square, dont worry - were not grading on your artistic abilities. Its not often you will be asked to draw in a college science class, so do your best and have a little fun with it. Below is my sketch or geologic map of the region (...dont laugh too hard!). You can do this in whatever way, using whatever medium, you are comfortable with. I chose to sketch this in MS Powerpoint using both the insert shapes function within the program and also to draw some features with my digital pen. If you prefer to do it the old fashioned way and put pen (pencil, or crayon!) to paper, or have some other program you prefer, go for it (I also like to sketch in the ibisPaintX app on my tablet). Just keep in mind you will have to upload your sketch for submission, so make sure you can save it in a format that is appropriate for submission to canvas (jpeg, gif & pdf work best). https://www.lpi.usra.edu/resources/cla/maps/thumbs/ 10/16/2021 L2 Activity: Geological Mapping https://canvas.uw.edu/courses/1476342/assignments/6650825 3/7 Obviously I did not sketch every detail on the image. I chose to sketch the objects that I found to be most interesting and that I felt like I could determine, with some certainty, what type of feature they are, and potentially figure out their relative ages. Decide on what you think the main features are in your image and label them using the vocabulary we covered in the Lesson 1 lecture presentations. The following image shows where I have identified and labeled several different formations: A reader of your map should be able to understand what the dominant surface features are in your sketch, and in what order they were formed. Often it is not clear to students (or me sometimes!) what a 10/16/2021 L2 Activity: Geological Mapping https://canvas.uw.edu/courses/1476342/assignments/6650825 4/7 surface feature is or when it was formed. Be bold and make a guess (or ask your TA for help!). This is exactly what the Apollo astronauts had to do when deciding on where to land safely on the Moon. As you can see below, I tried to replicate and incorporate the most prominent features I saw in the actual image. Step 3: Next you will decide on the relative ages of the features you have chosen to sketch. You will need to discuss/describe the relative ages of at least five features in your image in the following steps so make sure you sketched several different features. Suggestion: You could number the formations on your final sketch to make it easier to discuss them in your summary paragraph below by referring to the number of the feature versus having to write out the name every time. This next step draws from our discussions of the Apollo Missions in the lesson presentations this week. Im looking to see if you can make some educated guesses based on what you have learned about the Apollo landing sites. You may need to do some research to aid in your decision. Remember to cite any sources you use. Step 4: (5 pts) Pretend NASA is trying to determine the best place to land a manned mission on the Moon and you have been tapped to help figure this out. NASA engineers have narrowed their choices down to three locations, one of which is the location in the image you have chosen. Decide exactly where on your image you would advise the NASA engineers to land their spacecraft safely. Remember, the astronauts lives are at stake (no pressure)! Then compose a brief summary describing the exact location on your image and and why you feel its the best place to land, again using what you learned about the lunar surface from the lecture presentations, readings and your research. If you feel there isnt a reasonably safe location within your image to land, write a summary arguing against NASA using your location, making sure to use lunar vocabulary and reasoning based on the lecture materials, readings and your research. 10/16/2021 L2 Activity: Geological Mapping https://canvas.uw.edu/courses/1476342/assignments/6650825 5/7 Step 5: (5 pts) In your own words, compose a short summary (1-2 paragraphs) describing the features you mapped, using the proper vocabulary you learned in the lecture presentations. Be sure to indicate their relative ages as well as how you arrived at the ages and feature designations. You can compose this summary in a separate word editing program and save/submit the PDF version or type the summary in the provided text box. Heres an example summary for my selected image: “I decided to use d27. The oldest features in this image are the heavily cratered Highland mountains, most prevalent in the lower left hand limb of the image, extending along the limb of the Moon to the top of the image. The ghost craters, clearly filled in by the mare surrounding it, are the oldest features outside of the highlands that I was able to identify. They were clearly formed prior to the spread of the younger lava flow (mare) that covers most of the image. The highlands and the ghost craters may actually have the same age, but because they do not overlap, I was unable to determine their relative ages. The mare is therefore younger than both ghost craters and the highland mountains. The youngest features on my map are the simple impact craters that appear to lie on top of the mare and are therefore younger than that lava flow formation. It is not possible to tell the relative ages of the simple impact craters relative to each other because they do not overlap on the image. The complex impact crater within the rays on the right hand edge of the image is clearly younger than the mare on which it sits, as are the rays emanating from the impact site. The rays and debris (impact breccia) and the complex impact crater are likely all the same age as the they were probably created in the same impact event. The wrinkle ridges lie on top of the mare indicating that they formed after the mare solidified and are therefore younger than the mare. Again I could not determine their relative ages compared to the complex impactor/ray formation or the simple impact craters because the features do not overlap in any way.” Step 6: Finally, briefly answer the following questions. Questions Question 1 (4 pts): Does your map area show evidence of past geologic activity? If so, what is that evidence? Question 2 (4 pts): Do you think the location on your sketch that you chose to land a spacecraft is the only good landing site for a simple spacecraft? Why or why not? Or if you decided there was no decent landing spot, describe the type of surface that would make a good landing spot? Question 3 (4 pts): If NASA were to land where you suggest (or where you think an ideal landing spot would be), what might be the sample type(s) the astronauts would collect around their immediate landing site? What evidence do you have that these samples would be located at the landing site? Question 4 (2 pts): Your image likely has a complex impact crater in it. Even if it doesnt, describe the formation process of a complex impact craters central peaks. 10/16/2021 L2 Activity: Geological Mapping https://canvas.uw.edu/courses/1476342/assignments/6650825 6/7 Geological Mapping Rubric Question 5 (2 pts): What is a ghost crater? How (through what process) are ghost craters formed on the Moon? Question 6 (2 pts): What are sinuous rilles? How (through what process) are sinuous rilles formed on the Moon? Are they similar to or different from linear rilles - briefly explain? Question 7 (4 pts): Given all that goes into understanding the surface of an unfamiliar world, do you feel confident after this activity that you could do this same process successfully with an image from the surface of a different world? Why or why not? What to Submit for the Activity The original image you chose along with the labeled sketch of that image (Steps 1-3). Two (2) summary paragraphs (Steps 4 & 5).
