The case studies and literature review suggested that communication, teamwork, and collaboration are the strategies that can ensure staff safety. These are the standard strategies by which staff safety would be provided during a pandemic. Coronavirus has affected the whole world, and the emergency services department has to play an essential role in the pandemic. They are the first to respond and provide initial healthcare services and emergency aid to the public. Though these are common strategies, there are other alternatives.
The staff has to be safe because if they are not provided a safe and secure environment, they will not be able to treat the patients or perform the duty correctly. The physiological empowerment of employees is one of the most critical strategies and alternatives that can be used to ensure the staffs safety. It has been seen that empowerment helps them to achieve the opportunities to work in a feasible environment.
Physiological empowerment increases the motivation of employees in the four different aspects, including effectiveness, meaningfulness, competency, and right of choice. If the employees are empowered, they can choose the right option and work in such a crucial phase. It has been seen that competency is required for the employees because Coronavirus has made things worse. So, their competence is increased in the external and internal environment.
Moreover, it is the way to motivate the employees because the pandemic forced everyone to stay at home and leave their homes. The emergency service providers cannot stay home; they are forced to put their lives at risk and treat patients because of their profession. Based on all these essential factors, this is one of the best approaches to ensure staff safety. Empowerment is a concept that has already gained managements attention, and many organizations have already been adopting the concept for the ease of employees (Connolley, 2018).
STAFF SAFETY TELEMEDICINE THE SECOND ALTERNATIVE
Emergency Services Managers have to provide immediate aid to the employees, and during the Coronavirus, they have been short staff and not had time off, rewards, or incentives. They are working more hours during the pandemic putting their lives at risk. Things have not smoothed out yet, and staff safety is one of the critical measures that organizations have to consider. The organization has to decide between different alternatives that can help the safety of employees. It is one of the crucial topics in the literature and EMS these days. EMS organizations are worried because they need to ensure the wellbeing and safety of both staff and patients. EMS is not an organization that can stop serving the community.
Telemedicine is one of the approaches that can be used for both staff and patient safety. Telemedicine was implemented several decades ago, just not widely used. Telemedicine is a platform where patients can connect live in a virtual manner with a medical professional. With the rapid spread of Coronavirus, online medical consultations have been strongly urged to use rather than seek in-person treatment. Medical facilities and EMS are organizations are at risk for the virus transmitting.
Telemedicine is the concept where the staff will check the patients through an online platform. They are connected to a licensed medical provider such as a medic, nurse, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or physician. The medical industry has created platforms that can be used on a phone application or computer. You also can call in via skype or WhatsApp. These have been effective platforms for patient treatment. Telemedicine allows fewer emergency calls, reduces hospital visits and overall medical visits, unless necessary. Overall, both patients and medical professionals have been comfortable and satisfied with telemedicine. This alternative approach can be used for staff safety during the pandemic (Zaboli, 2018).
STAFF SAEFTY NO TOUCH EQUIPMENT THE THIRD ALTERNATIVE
The pandemic has brought a significant lifestyle change, and it has enabled people to live in a new world. The 21st century is regarded as the century of evolution and change, but this era should also comfort people. In the case of a pandemic, all emergency services organizations have had to play a significant role. There was no sufficient infrastructure, government emergency services departments, hospitals, ER, none of the healthcare organizations were prepared.
The technology serves as a solution to staff safety in a pandemic, and it has to be implemented in all health care settings. Though the concept of technology in healthcare organizations has already been introduced, several organizations have already implemented the different technologies. Still, Coronavirus is one of the pandemics that has brought several changes in lifestyle, and the technology has to be introduced as well.
Digital technologies, including electronic devices like a thermometer and several other machines, have to be introduced in healthcare settings. According to the guidelines of WHO, it has been seen that there should be social distancing, and no one should touch each other. The typical person can quickly fulfill the guidelines, but the doctors have to take care of them.
They need to check the patients throughout the day, and their lives remain at risk of contracting the virus. The no-touch thermometers should be introduced in all medical settings, including ambulatory emergency medical care. Medical professionals should be able to use the no-touch versions rather than close contact with the patient. Medical professionals are essential, and they have played a crucial role in the pandemic; the introduction of such technologies in EMS possesses safety to patients (Garth, 2018).
STAFF SAFET EMPLOY TRAINING THE FOURTH ALTERNATIVE
Employees are the strength of an organization, and organizations cannot succeed without them. Like all medical organizations, Emergency Services Departments are required to take care of both the employees and patients. Employees are the ones who lead the organization toward success and progress. Coronavirus has impacted the whole world; more than 100 countries have got been affected. Numerous deaths have been reported, and hospitals are overcrowded; this is occurring all over the world.
Staff safety has already been one of the critical concerns of the organizations. The pandemic has changed many things, and the most important thing is the change in working style and motivational strategies. EMS Managers need to adapt the alternative strategies to ensure staff safety.
One of the strategies used for staff safety is employee training. Not all employees have been through a pandemic, especially one like Coronavirus. Adapting employee training for emergency response will help keep them and the patients safe. The patients reactions need to be considered; the pandemic is new; they are scared. Hence their fear can cause agitation and aggression. Employees need to be trained on how to console them while not putting themselves in a safety risk.
The staff should be taught different tactics and training for the variety of situations they may encounter during a pandemic. They need other techniques or approaches on how to handle the patients based on the case. There should be lectures along with a written handbook to refer back. An example would be on how to keep themselves safe from an aggressive patient. The aggressive behavior of patients should be treated, and that it is one of the effective approaches in the literature and society (Chegini, 2018).
