Overview
“If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday.”
—Pearl Buck
Your final longer-term project in this course is to complete a multimedia presentation. The work you did on the Topic Exploration Worksheet in Module Two and
the historical context and introduction in Module Six will directly support your work on this project.
One of the prime benefits of studying history is that it allows us to learn about who we are and where we came from. The people and events of the past can
often shed light on the conditions and social norms of the present. Having historical awareness can inform various aspects of your life as well as future
aspirations. Learning from past failures and successes can shape ideals and values for years to come.
This final longer-term project is designed to help you understand the fundamental processes and value of studying history. In the first project, you completed
the Topic Exploration Worksheet on one of the topics or themes from the library guide. You investigated the types of research you might need to do to learn
more about the topic and developed research questions. In Project 2, you used this worksheet to complete a research plan and introduction. You selected one of
your research questions and did some secondary-source research, speculated on primary source needs, and used the information to write the introduction and
thesis statement for a possible research paper.
In this third project, you will create a multimedia presentation that explores both major developments in historical inquiry and the value of examining history.
This assessment addresses the following course outcomes:
Investigate major developments in the progression of historical inquiry for informing critical questions related to historical narrative
Articulate the value of examining historical events for their impact on contemporary issues
1
Prompt
Now that you have done some research with primary and secondary sources (using sources from the library guide for your chosen topic) and written an
introduction for a possible history paper, you will turn your attention to thinking about the creation and value of historical inquiry. You will use the research you
have done throughout this course, as well as course materials, to inform your thoughts. To present your opinions and observations, you will create a multimedia
presentation (using a presentation tool such as PowerPoint or Prezi) that addresses the following critical elements. While these questions may seem “big,”
remember that you are addressing them in a presentation, not a paper, and can use bullet points, visuals, or other methods. These critical elements will be
evaluated from the information you provide in your multimedia presentation. Note: If using Prezi, be sure to include a Word document with notes. If using
PowerPoint, be sure to use the speaker notes feature.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
I. Articulate how different historical lenses impact how people perceive an historical event. The lenses include political, economic, and social.
A. Explain how historical lenses could be applied to your topic. For instance, are there aspects of this event that might interest a political historian
and what are they?
B. Choose one of the lenses referenced above, and detail how the historical narrative you started in your research and introduction might change
through this lens. For instance, how might the “story” of your event change when studied through its political aspects?
C. Discuss what conclusions you can draw about the “telling” of history in relation to the “teller.” How does this impact for you what “history” is?
Be sure to back up your opinions with information learned throughout the course and in reference to your chosen topic.
II. Based on your conclusions, articulate the value of studying history.
A. Describe how you could apply to our lives today what you have learned from the event you have studied. Be sure to reference specific
contemporary issues. For instance, what specific issues that we encounter today could benefit from lessons learned from your event?
B. Discuss your opinion of the adage that “history repeats itself.” Do you agree or disagree? Be sure to explain why you have this opinion with
information you have learned throughout the course and in your research of your topic.
C. Discuss your obligation as a citizen of your society to understanding the history behind issues that impact you every day. For instance, what civic
duties you can be better at if you know more about their history? How can being a more informed member of society benefit you and society?
Supporting Work and Resources
For support on developing a multimedia presentation, refer to the PowerPoint Training (Windows PC or Mac) or Prezi Training Atomic Learning/Hoonuit
tutorials. Log in to Atomic Learning/Hoonuit using your SNHU email address as your username and your SNHU email password as your password. Be sure to
include notes as needed in your presentation in order to meet the outlined critical elements.
2
Project 3 Rubric
Guidelines for Submission: Your multimedia presentation should be approximately 10 to 12 slides. You are encouraged to include a combination of text, visuals,
and sound in order to support your work. Note: If using Prezi, be sure to include a Word document with notes. If using PowerPoint, be sure to include speaker
notes.

Part 1: Brainstorming
Instructions: Brainstorm your thoughts on each question in preparation for creating an outline of your multimedia presentation, including specific examples as appropriate.
State three historical lenses that could be applied to your topic and explain how each lens can be applied.
Describe how one of the lenses you just identified might change how you approach researching your topic, thus affecting the historical narrative.
Discuss the conclusions you can draw from thinking about how history is told. Consider how historians are persuaded by their own biases, motivations, and influences of their time.
Describe how your research of a historical topic can help you understand
contemporary
issues in our lives, and try to list at least two related contemporary issues
After taking this course, what is your opinion about the statement “history repeats itself”? Do you think this is accurate? What information from the course guides you to this conclusion?
Discuss your obligation as a citizen of your society to understand the history behind issues that impact you every day. (Note that this does not specifically have to relate to your topic).
Political Lens:
With my topic being the drafting of the U.S. Constitution, the political lens would be relevant. The topic if very political and is centered around the government.
Social Lens:
This topic also uses the social lens because it demonstrates the differences difference between a variety of social groups.
Economic Lens:
Among the different social groups mentioned in the Social Lens explanation is the ordinary citizens. For the first time, mechanics, small farmers, etc. were encouraged and welcomed to participate in the political process. This played a significant role during that time as it allowed the common people to elect politicians that best resonated with their economic interests. .
A lens that I didn’t really look into before is the economic lens. This is an interesting perspective, and it would change my approach by focusing more on the drafting of the U.S. affected the economic and how that affect trickled over time into present time.
As spoken about in previous modules, historians do have biases when telling history. This may not happen all the time but when it is coming from a secondary source the reader needs to be aware of these biases and take into consideration during their research.
An issue that came to mind was the disagreements that still happen between our government today. Having that understanding that in the political world things will always seem so out of control and hectic.
Another one is the issues between social classes. There is still ongoing disagreements between who should have more say. The working class still moves forward to wanting more say while the elite continue to hold on to their power.
History most definitely repeats itself and I find that to be very much so true because people do not care or bother to learn about history. Therefore causing ignorance and that causes people to unknowingly make mistakes until after the fact.
After learning about the importance of history in this class; I highly would encourage everyone, including myself, to read and learn about history. It doesn’t matter what profession you are in, history still applies and is relevant.
Part 2: Outline
Instructions: Create a plan for your presentation. You will need to create 10 to 12 slides that respond to the critical elements in the Project 3 Rubric. (If you are using Microsoft Word, your multimedia presentation should be 4 to 5 pages long.) The slide title suggestions are provided to help you develop your presentation. The field for slide text is a place for you to develop your ideas for your presentation’s content, drawing from Part 1. The field for slide visuals and audio ideas is a place to develop ideas for visuals and audio elements that can enhance your presentation and engage your audience. As you develop your ideas, you are encouraged to provide details as to how you will use these elements to engage your audience.

Historical Lenses and History’s Value
I will refer back to module 3 when talking about the different history lenses and how they change the perspective of a research topic for a historian. By defining a historical lens, it helps the historian figure out why a history event happened.

My Topic
My research topic is drafting of the U.S. Constitution. I will provide primary and secondary sources to not only support the historical lenses that I am presenting but also to help answer my research question and go in depth about my topic.

Lens 1
Political Lens:
With my topic being the drafting of the U.S. Constitution, the political lens would be relevant. The topic if very political and is centered around the government.
Lens 2
Social Lens:
This topic also uses the social lens because it demonstrates the differences difference between a variety of social groups. This demonstrates how the drafting of the United States Constitution affected different social groups and the long impact that that had on certain people. Which ultimately will talk about how it impacted the society. That includes how their motives might’ve changed and what drove their actions and behaviors.
Lens 3
Economic Lens:
Among the different social groups mentioned in the Social Lens explanation is the ordinary citizens. For the first time, mechanics, small farmers, etc. were encouraged and welcomed to participate in the political process. This played a significant role during that time as it allowed the common people to elect politicians that best resonated with their economic interests. .
Conclusions
In conclusion, in my presentation I will speak about all three lenses and how they all represent and resonate with my topic. Using the graphics and some audio to help with bringing together my project I will try to keep the audience as engaged as possible. I want to make the pictures familiar. That helps to connect with the audience and make it as relatable as possible.
Our Lives
In our lives today there is history everywhere we look. Things and people are there because of what has happened in the past. Generations are just building blocks. Our lives are just building blocks. We are just a building of blocks that keeps on getting taller and without the block below, the block in the present wouldn’t be able to build. We are more alike than we think if we look at history. We would most likely be more appreciative and stop taking for granted so many aspects of our lives. We often get so caught up in the present busy lives that we have that we don’t think about the days that we weren’t so fortunate as people.

Does History Repeat Itself? (My Opinion)
Yes, of course history repeats itself. I have heard this many times throughout my life and have seen it happened first handed. During this I could possibly share a story of something simple and relatable that will point out how, as being humans, we do repeat history.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pMAyygF_24
Does History Repeat Itself? (Evidence From the Course)
Yes it is clear that history repeats itself. Humans always tend to be emotional creatures that, perhaps in different situations, but ultimately end up doing the same thing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPZMKxgTAN4
Are Citizens Obligated to Know History?
Citizens are not obligated to know history. That however does not because that they shouldn’t be encouraged. The special note to take about history is that it applies to everything and anything. Everything has a back story.
