The Dutch, English, French and
Spanish began colonizing the
Caribbean around 1500.
Some areas, such as the
Bahamas, weren’t colonized
until the 1700s.
The indigenous people of the
Caribbean, the Arawak and
Caribs, were completely wiped
out by colonial invaders.
Caribbean History
The demographics of the Caribbean reflect it’s history of
Colonization, Slavery and Indentured Servitude.
Today, the majority of people are of African-descent. European
minority, East Asian and South Asian Indentured Laborers
Colonial languages and new languages are spoken throughout the
region and have a hierarchical relationship.
Instruments and Musical Style
African and European derived musical practices,
aesthetics, and instruments predominate throughout
the Caribbean.
African-derived instruments, dances, rhythmic
concepts/complexity, compositional concepts
European-derived instruments, dance forms, song forms
Localized East Indian instruments and musical traditions
In many instances, these musical traits have been
combined to create new Creole styles
