This means that I will show you some code and ask you to determine what the output will be. (Or if there will be an error). • Questions requiring you to write code. At no point will you be required to write a full web page. Most code I ask will be along the lines of a block of code. At most, I may ask you to write a complete function. Multiple Choice Questions: These will be of similar type and difficulty of the questions from your online quizzes that you had early on in the course. Short Answer Questions: You might be asked, for example, to “Briefly describe the purpose of the document.ready() function”. (Though I hope this would be an easy one!) Or perhaps What is the difference between the div and span tags? Questions involving interpreting code: For example, you might be given a small snippet of code such as: var names = [Henry,Lisa,Bob]; names.push(Jenny); names.push(Tina); alert( names[3] ); and asked to describe what the output of the alert statement will be. Sample Coding Questions: Here are a few examples of the kinds of questions you will be asked: Example 1: Using the each() function, write some code that will examine all tags on a page. If they are in green, then change their font to ‘Arial’. Your code should use an anonymous function. Example 2: Refer to the attached ‘exam_web_page.htm’ file. Suppose that for whatever reason, you wish to place the name “John Smith” Inside the ‘txtName’ field whenever the page loads. Write the line of jQuery code (that you would later place inside your document.ready() function) that will accomplish this task. You do not need to write out the document.ready() function here. Example 3: Using an attribute filter, write a line of jQuery code that will (1)select all ‘img tags with an ‘alt’ that contains the string ‘photo’ and (2)apply a CSS style to it that changes the width to 50px. Topics: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • You should know how to apply all of the jQuery and JavaScript selectors, attribute, selectors, functions, etc listed in the cheat-sheet document (final_exam_cheat_sheet.doc). This document can be found on the Resources page. You should know how to apply any CSS code present on the cheat-sheet. You can expect at least one question requiring you to write code that involves each of the following: each(), prop(checked), attr(), and this. I do not plan on asking you to write or interpret any code involving the event object. However, you should be able to identify the term if you are asked about it. You should know how and when to apply parseInt() and parseFloat(). Attribute Filters: You should be able to write code involving basic attribute filters. Functions that return a value: You should understand what it means / how to use a function that returns a value. Arrays: Arrays are important – do do not neglect to review how to work with them. You should be able to do some very basic work with arrays. The primary focus will come from the first lecture on arrays (arrays.ppt). Note: If I ask you to use arrays with a loop, it will be an extremely basic question and will only involve interpreting the code. That is, I will not ask you to write any loop code since you did not get to practice it much during the course. Strings: You should know how to use indexOf() and split() as well as toUpperCase(), toLowerCase() Booleans: Be familiar with the boolean data type. Be sure to review that lecture. I will try not to ask anything very confusing, but you should know understand how this data type works and be able to interpret it if I show you code that uses it. Regular expressions: The exam will almost certainly include at least a couple of questions on this topic. However, you only need to understand the basics so I will try to keep these questions relatively straight forward. But do not neglect to review this topic. Loops: I will not ask you to write any loops. However, I may show you a simple loop and ask you to interpret the result. Ajax: For the AJAX Lectures, there will be a maximum of 2-3 questions in total from these two lectures. Just spend a little time reviewing, and if you paid attention to the items emphasized in lecture, you should be fine. DOM: There will not be any questions on the DOM other than those which you have already been using in your code in your homework assignments. So if you have not been asked to code it, you will not encounter it on your exam. API: I may include a screen capture of the API from an unfamiliar function and ask you to interpret something about it. Important: Review at the Cheat Sheet / Mini-API You can find this document on the ‘Resources’ page. This is identical to the version that I will provide to you on the final exam. I will only ask you to apply (i.e. either write or read/interpret) jQuery or JavaScript functions that are present on the cheat-sheet. So if a jQuery/JS function is not on that sheet, then you do not have to worry about encountering them on the exam. So as long as you ensure that you can read and write code that uses the various JS/jQuery functions that are on the Mini-API, you should be fine.
