INTL102 Final Presentation
From syllabus: Students will complete an 8-10 page reflexive paper applying lessons learned
throughout the quarter about thinking and writing reflexively. That is, asking yourself WHY,
why, why, you are interested in this topic, and how your own life experiences, background,
values, and so forth influence your understanding.
Students will pick an identity-based conflict to organize their paper around. The main questions
they will answer in this paper are: What makes this an identity-based conflict? Why is it
important? How might it be transformed into identity-based cooperation? Why is this relevant to
me? This will account for 30\% of their final grade.
Individual/Group Presentation - In addition to these papers and based generally on them,
students will be encouraged to join with other students within their sections and prepare a joint 7
minute Ted-like Talk for presentation in sectional sessions. These collective presentations will be
worth 15\% of each students’ grade.

Students will pick an identity-based conflict to organize their paper around.
The main questions they will answer in this paper are:
o What makes this an identity-based conflict?
o Why is it important?
o How might it be transformed into identity-based cooperation?
o Why is this relevant to me?
Prepare a 7 minute maximum Ted-like Talk for presentation in sectional sessions during
weeks 9 & 10
Upload the presentation in PDF format to Canvas (and video recording if you have
made prior arrangements with your TA about pre-recording your presentation). Only
one submission per group is required.
o Upload by June 6th 11:59pm
Sample Outline:
Begin with clear reflexive introduction
Why is this relevant to me?
o Be reflexive – talk about my why!
o Why does this conflict interest me?
o ask yourself WHY, why, why, you are interested in this topic, and how your own
life experiences, background, values, and so forth influence your understanding.
Background to conflict
o Main events (might summarize annotated chronology of conflict in chart form)
o And/or provide brief history
What makes this an identity-based conflict?
o Is there a conflicting historical narrative?
o Antagonism: Us vs Them, Blame, Attribution, Projection
o E.g. Kelman or Azar’s framework for identity-based conflicts
Why is it important?
o Consequences of conflicts
o What are the collective and individual needs that are frustrated or threatened in this
conflict?
How might it be transformed into identity-based cooperation? As examples:
o How might ARIA be used as an analytical or organizing framework
o Cooperative problem-solving techniques (i.e. integrative problem solving)
o Track 1, 2,3
o Grassroot movements
What did I learn in working on this project that is important to me?
o Be reflexive – again, summarize my why. Why I selected this topic and what, reflexively
speaking, I learned in working on this project (i.e. about yourself, your world, about
conflict and cooperation, etc.)?
Final Paper
• Students will pick an identity-based conflict to organize their paper around.
• The main questions they will answer in this paper are:
o What makes this an identity-based conflict?
o Why is it important?
o How might it be transformed into identity-based cooperation?
o Why is this relevant to me?
• 8-10 pages, due June 10th
• Group Project
Sample Outline (you can use this for your Friday journal)
Background
o Main events
o History
o Reflexivity, talking about your own interest
Problem Definition
o Identify the issue specifically
o Ed Azar’s framework for identity based conflicts
o Why is this an identity based conflict
Problem Solution
o Who are the parties involved?
o Incentives?
▪ What do they have to gain?
▪ Why are they at odds with one another?
▪ Why does one person’s identity hinge on the negation of the other?
o What works? And for whom?
o What’s been already been done?
o What would you like to see? [reflexivity]
o Evidence
o Shortcomings
o Framework we discussed in class
o ARIA
o Track 1, 2, 3

ARIA Method
Antagonism
In the antagonism stage, parties in conflict surface
their differences and openly share their frustrations
and concerns in a safe setting.
Antagonism
Resonance
Parties articulate their needs and values, explaining to
one another why this issue or concern is so
passionately important to them. Exploring areas of
similarity and agreement, they arrive at a shared
agenda.
Resonance
Invention
In this stage, parties brainstorm integrative
inventions that satisfy the needs of everyone
involved.
Invention
Action
Parties discuss ways to implement and monitor the
plan designed in the invention stage, who will be
involved, and how to define and measure success.

From Self-Reflexivity:
• What does this conflict have to do with me?
• Why do I care so deeply about it?
• Why am I hurt, sad, angry, afraid?
To Resonance:
• What is the intersection between my core
concerns and yours?
• What is the synergy between the me+you=US
• How might we cooperate to meet each side’s
needs together?
Antagonism
• Find a safe place and time.
▪ Download solo form: http://www.ariagroup.com/conflictLINK2.html
• Through thoughts or words verbalize the frustration
and anger.
• Point your finger at the imaginary other and let it
out/write it down:
– You always….
– You never…
– You are…

Self-Reflexivity
• Pointing your finger outward, note the three
fingers pointing inward.
• Reflecting back on the Antagonism ask yourself…
“Why do I care so much?”
• Knowing the reasons why you care deeply will
enable you to understand, and share, your
underlying needs and values.

Integrative Invention
▪ Invent creative options that will meet the common
needs and values that have been identified.

Case Study – NEW CULTURE WAR IN US

Wear a mask? You’re a liberal snowflake controlled by big government. Want to
reopen restaurants? You’re a greedy conservative willing to sacrifice Grandma for the
economy.
Take a look at what two governors — one from a reliably Republican state and another
from a reliably Democratic state — said this week.
“We have a public health crisis in this country, there’s no doubt about it,” Gov. Tate
Reeves of Mississippi said in an appearance on “Fox News Sunday.” “But we also have
an economic crisis.”
“We have turned the corner and we are on the decline,” Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said,
citing an article showing that the death rate has fallen by half in New York City, in his
daily briefing on Wednesday. “To me, that vindicates what we are doing here in New
York, which says: Follow the science, follow the data, put the politics aside and the
emotion aside. What we’re doing here shows results.”
