The mountains are divided into three sections, which include southern, central, and northern mountainous regions. The region has unique, diverse topography characterized by steep slopes, wide valleys, and broad ridges. In addition, the area is also known for geologic stability, which has resulted in inhabitation by different communities and species (McDaniel, 2018). These mountains provide a habitat for at least 78 mammals, 240 birds, 50 species of reptiles, and at least 75 amphibians. Deciduous hardwood species dominate the central hardwoods of this region. Furthermore, the region is regarded as a biological species with the highest number of species that are considered endangered. Locality and Topography of Arab Heritage To continue, the Arabs are located in the extreme southwestern corner of Asia. They are marked by the northern boundaries of Saudi Arabi and Kuwait. The total area occupied by the Arabs is calculated to be 1.2 million square miles. The area has a geographic cohesiveness characterized by desert parts and other parts of the port, coast, and greener land, favorable for Agriculture. The inhabitants have a homogenous culture in terms of language, religion, and political structures. Similarities in Health Care Beliefs of Appalachian and Arab Heritage Moreover, the two cultures have some similarities regarding healthcare, related to gender preference, modesty causes of the illness, and other cultural beliefs. One common feature between the two cultures is that they both recognize the role of traditional medicine. Before one seeks professional health attention, they first consider seeking assistance from traditional healers. Despite modernization, the two communities still acknowledge the presence of herbalists and folk medicine (Savage et al. 2018). Whenever one feels sick, they consult traditional medicine men and women. They do so unless the cases are severe is when they visit professional health centers. The second similarity is how the two communities attribute the cause of the sickness. Both communities attribute sickness to bad luck, poor lifestyles, and witchcraft. For the Appalachians, they consider changing their behavior as one form of therapy. For example, when a cigarette smoker gets sick, the first therapy they have in mind is to quit smoking. The Arabs, on their part, believe that sickness is caused by fate (Purnell & Fenkl, 2019). When one gets sick, the idea of visiting a health Centre is not part of their options because they do not believe that people can be treated and get healed in hospitals. How Beliefs Influence the Delivery of Health Care These cultural beliefs of the two cultural heritages influence how health care is delivered. When people from these communities decide to seek medical care within the hospital, health care practitioners must try to understand the role of folk medicine. Some of them seek medical attention when they are already following other types of traditional medicine. Doctors have to follow the effects of folk medicine on the treatment process. If folk medicine is neutral, sometimes physicians consider administering their treatment alongside the folk medicine that the patient had already been using. Health caregivers also need to comprehend that folk medicine is part of their culture and should not intimidate them for doing what they do. The beliefs have also forced nurses and physicians to be culturally sensitive in the delivery of health care. When attending to a patient from either of these communities, one has to be keen not to mention something that would offend their health care beliefs. Health care professionals must aim to use the simplest language so that they can understand each other. Additionally, they also ought to acknowledge their beliefs and communicate in the best way possible, especially if the professional management of an illness contradicts the patient’s beliefs. These individuals came from countries like Germany, England and Ireland. When they settled in America, they chose to do so in the highlands or mountain areas, they thought that by lying there, they would find time to practice their spiritual activities without disruption from others. Nowadays, they can be found living in the southern parts of New York all the way through the Northern parts of Mississippi within wide ridges, steep slopes, the valleys within the mountains (Swanson, 2018). The Appalachians prefer living simple lives and have high rates of poverty and unemployment. When they do work, they work in areas of farming and mining to sustain their lives and family. There is not easy access to these areas, there is limited public transportation and planes. This fact makes it difficult to have people visit and is one of the main reasons for the sociocultural isolation these individuals experience. The individuals of Arab Heritage come from many countries, but they can be traced back their roots to the nomadic desert tribes of the Arabian Peninsula. There is record of a total of 22 countries they migrate from some included are, Egypt, Morocco, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia. Not only do they all share ancestry and heritage, but they also have in common the language that is known as Arabic and the religion of Islam. The earliest Arab immigrants in the United States are noted back in the 19th century. Most Arab Americans immigrants after 1965 are Muslims (Lewis, 2017). Arab Americans are found all over the country, but an exact number is not known, it is estimated to be about 3.5 million. These individuals get washed out and are not counted in the census, they fall under the “white” rather than getting their own ethnic group. Similarities in the Beliefs Appalachian and Arab heritages share many similarities when it comes to health. These individuals might share different views and ways of life but at the end of the day they are strongly guided by their heritage. Their beliefs help to shape the way they choose to receive their health care, their attitudes towards an illness and their approach to getting treatment (Purnell & Fenki, 2019). In these two cultures, smoking is very prevalent. As we all know, smoking is deteriorating to our health. Other health similarities that these individuals share are diseases like cancer and all the complications that come with obesity. Both cultures believe that mental health is a case of an individual having “bad nerves”. Another similarity they share regarding delivery of care is their gender preferences providers. In both the Arab and Appalachian communities, it is customary for females be inclined to receive health care by female providers only. Religion or Folks Beliefs Cultural beliefs influence the way these individuals see healthcare. The Appalachians tend to not trust outsiders, they try anything in their power to self-medicate the issue at hand. They believe that since nature predominates over people, they should let nature heal. In this case, they use herbal medicine, teas and poultices as their type of folk medicine (Light, 2018). This makes the condition they patient may have further along to treat. Arabs on the hand, according to their religion, believe that bad health is a form of punishment. In modern times, they do seek medical care because they consider themselves privileged to have health care insurance in this country, because in theirs it is not easily accessible. Arabs do frown upon seeking medical care for mental health. They believe this form of health care is unnecessary, not affective and that it is only designed for individuals with severe mental illness or those that are “crazy” (Sabry & Khalil, 2019).
