Explain Week 1 was very informative and looking forward to the various topics ahead. What I did not know about mental health is that there is a therapy like Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) started in the 1930’s. This therapy is a procedure, done under general anesthesia, in which small electric currents are passed through the brain, intentionally triggering a brief seizure. ECT seems to cause changes in brain chemistry that can quickly reverse symptoms of certain mental health conditions. 2. Share one thing that you want to know more about. Explain I really want to know more on Mental health emergencies and how to handle them. Most of the time when someone commit a crime, the person will be diagnosed with mental health issue. Emergencies like gun violence, anger management, suicide are all mostly linked to mental issues and most of the time the patient is a harm to themselves and the community. Most of the time some of these people have endured issues in life that has caused them to behave the way they do. I would like to know more and how to help them. 3. Identify one thing that surprised you about mental health. Explain your answer. One thing that surprised me is a person can have a mental health issue and will not look like they have a problem. Mental health comes in various forms from depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder, autism, and post traumatic stress disorder. As a future nurse this is very important to me because my patient can come looking well on the outside but there is more to what they may be going through. 4. Practice your therapeutic communication skills this week on friends and colleagues. Discuss the difference you found between using therapeutic communication skills and conversational skills. I just use therapeutic communication on my husband, and I felt it made our conversation much better. My husband said I am a better listener unlike normal communication, and I sound impatient to add my opinion to the topic, but I allowed him to express himself while I showed empathy and interest to what he was saying. 5. Discuss whether or not therapeutic communication was difficult for you? What reaction from the other person did you notice? It was not difficult for me because I was listening and using open ended question. I clarify or validate when I must which was helpful. My husband’s reaction was priceless. He sounded relaxed and shared more with me because he knows that I always cute into his speech when we have a normal conversation and I was not this time. Explain One thing I learned in today’s lecture is the history of psychiatric nursing. In 1873 Linda Richards was the first American psychiatric nurse. Hildegard Peplau published interpersonal relations in nursing. Considered “Mother of psychiatric nursing”. The development of psychotropic drugs were developed in the 1950s and since psychiatric nursing has evolved in being able to treat more patients. 2. Share one thing that you want to know more about. Explain I would like to know more about the chemical imbalances that cause people to act the way they do and their thought processes. I haven’t had much experience with caring for the mentally ill but I do have relatives that suffer from it and interacting with them on a daily base gives me a little insight. 3. There are a lot of people that believe that there is no such thing as having a mental disorder and that maybe the person just needs to turn to god to be healed. But there are studies that show that this is a real disease and that there is medication out there to help manage symptoms. Therapeutic communication skills are mainly used to develop a trusting relation with a client, patient, or even colleagues. There are many different types of therapeutic communication skills nurses can incorporate into practice. I think in conversation with a friend it flows easily where as you both can input and bounce ideas off each other. For example, Conversation skills you don’t have to worry about using silence whereas that is considered to be therapeutic communication skill. 5. Therapeutic communication is somewhat difficult for me but compared to when I first started the nursing program I have become a lot better at using therapeutic communication. I think my non-verbal communication is something that I would have to work better on. People tend to notice non-verbal communication more.
