PERSUASIVE SPEECH GUIDE With Required Outline
Template
PERSUASIVE SPEECH: Direct Method (150 Points)
Review Chapter 16 in your online textbook. This is a FIVE-MINUTE
speech. Note: You will not use any visuals and/or props for the speech.
In this speech, you will incorporate what you have learned about logos
(using facts/stats/logical reasoning to connect to the audience’s logical
side), pathos (being passionate to connect to the audience’s emotions),
and ethos (being a credible speaker to increase the audience’s trust in
you).
Required Topic: Coronavirus/COVID-19
Proposition Statement: This is a SINGLE, CLEAR, SHORT statement
in which you will propose a very specific SINGLE action that each of us
can do easily and immediately about COVID.
Here are good and bad examples of a prop statement about
handwashing. By the way, DO NOT talk about handwashing, as it has
been thoroughly covered by the media.
Good Example: “I propose that each of you wash your hands for at least
20 minutes as soon as you return home.” [This is very specific as to
when and how long]
Bad example: “I propose that each of you wash your hands a lot.” [This
does not tell us exactly how long and when to do it].
Page 2
Bad example: “I propose that each of you make it mandatory for all LA
residents to wash their hands for 20 minutes as soon as they return
home.” [None of us have the power to make other people do it, right?]
Bad example: “I propose that each of you wash your hands for at least
20 minutes as soon as you return home or use hand sanitizer.” [Don’t
propose more than one thing.]
Remember, the format must be simple and clear: I propose that each of
you do this ONE thing.
============
*This is from Page 1 of your speech outline and must be included in your
submitted outline template:
OVERVIEW
Proposition Statement: I propose that each of you (do this ONE thing
regarding COVID 19 that is easy to do right now). [Must be stated
exactly like this in the Template *right next to this label]
Reason#1: Why should we agree with your Proposition Statement?
[Must be stated exactly like this in the Template *right next to this label]
Reason#2: Why should we agree with your Proposition Statement?
[Must be stated exactly like this in the Template *right next to this label]

THE OUTLINE TEMPLATE IS IN THE MODULES AREA. Submit the completed template in
the Assignments area as a PDF attachment. You can do a copy and paste into the submission box
instead BUT this will mess up the format, so not recommended.
*NO OUTLINE MEANS NO POINTS FOR THIS PRESENTATION!
• Review Guide To Formal Outlining in Modules area if necessary
• The speech outline must be in this format: full-sentence, detailed, and typed. Use only SHORT
sentences.
• Correct format must be used (Headings: I., II., A., B., 1., 2., etc.). Headings must be aligned and
indented correctly.
• Only ONE sentence per heading.
• The outline template must be used with the REQUIRED LABELS in BOLD (Attention Getter,
Body, etc.)
• LABELS ARE REQUIRED. WITHOUT THEM, YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT
THE LABELS MEAN CANNOT BE DETERMINED. THIS HAS SIGNIFICANT
IMPLICATIONS FOR CONTENT QUALITY POINTS.
• More notes = more reading and less eye contact. Suggestion: Use one small card and put your
oral citation info on it so you can refer to ONLY this info during the presentation.
INFORMATION CONTENT
• Focus: Everything you say must be in the submitted outline. Skipping information that is in
the outline, or adding extra information while speaking, affects your time and results in your
speech sounding disorganized. The speaker then appears to be rambling and off-topic. This
results in point deductions.
• Logical Reasoning and Evidence Support: Do not make claims without evidence (or strong logic)
to back them up. Everything you say must make sense, and information must be organized.
• Proposition Statement (see above)
RESEARCH/CITATIONS
By now, you know what we mean by credible sources, right? You now know how to use the library’s
databases. For this speech, you will ONLY use newspaper articles found through Proquest
and/or https://news.google.com/
DO NOT use items labeled as opinions, commentaries, or editorials. ONLY use actual articles.
Required: At least two articles. Must be January 2020 or newer.
Sources must be oral cited by providing sufficient info for us to find them easily.
Do it just like this example: According to a March 2020 [DATE] Los Angeles Times
[NEWSPAPER NAME] article by Sam Ramos [AUTHOR] called “COVID-19 Claims More Lives,”
[ARTICLE TITLE] (then use your OWN words to tell us what they wrote). DO NOT USE THE
EXACT WORDS IN THE ARTICLE!
*No need for a Works Cited list because you are telling us all the info here.

SPEECH DELIVERY

EYE CONTACT: DO NOT READ! Good eye contact means that you are looking directly into
the camera. Take your time to really connect with your audience!
Must also use appropriate voice projection/volume; energy/enthusiasm; speed/pace. Speak
clearly!
Refer to the BIG SIX slides in Modules area and attached Grade Sheet.
EYE CONTACT: There will be significant deductions for speakers who are too
focused on their notes. Take your time to really connect with your audience by
looking directly into the camera.
A note about evaluation of eye contact
• Mostly looking off-camera (even slightly off-camera) and hardly
looking directly into the camera will result in a deduction of 90\%+
points.
• Eye moving quickly between the camera and whatever is off-camera:
50\%+ deduction.
• Looking directly into the camera for the entire time (except for maybe
10 seconds): Will earn 90\%+ eye contact points.
See Grade Sheet so you know how many points are directly tied to eye
contact. It’s a LOT!
Present your information in a relaxed and warm way. SMILE!
Don’t forget to blink

Main Point #1: Reason #1 Supporting Proposition)
Main Point #2: Reason #2 Supporting Proposition)
ONLY use the above main points. Do not use any other “main points.” The main points in the
Outline Template must be *exactly the same as the ones in the OVERVIEW section below.
Outline Format: ONLY ONE SENTENCE PER HEADING. But you can have as many
subpoints as you want under each heading. Short sentences highly recommended. Complete
sentences only.
