RUNNING HEAD: PICOT Final Statement
Background
On a patient’s road to recovery, nurses are seen as the glue that holds it together. They
have a significant role in ensuring the patient’s journey to recovery is smooth and are spread in
most sectors of medical practice, including private practices, clinics and hospitals. However,
nurses at times suffer from job burnout which affects their attendance to patient needs. The
nursing practice has a demanding nature, leading to fewer nurses in the sector and a growing sick
population leading to the additional labor on nurses. Job burnout in nurses is known to affect
their attendance to patients leading to medical errors and other factors that cause deterioration of
the patient’s health. The problem is the increasing prevalence of job burnout in nurses is likely to
affect the quality of medical care a patient gets. When patients get high-quality medical services,
they tend to heal faster than patients receiving low-quality medical care. Therefore, job burnout
has indirect effects on patient outcome. The purpose of this paper is to establish a relationship
between job burnout in nurses and medical care. It also seeks to expound on the effects of job
burnout in nurses on patient recovery rate. The objective of the study is to prove that young
patients receiving medical care from nurses suffering from job burnout recover at a slower rate
as compared to young patients receiving medical care from nurses not suffering from job
burnout. The research question is ‘Does job burnout in nurses affect the recovery rate of young
patients?’
How do these two articles support the nurse practice issue you chose?
Babeiamiri’s article provides one of the reasons as to why job burnout among nurses affects
their performance, i.e. it affects their mental state. Job burnout tended to exhaust the mental state
of the nurse, leading them to make dire medical errors that deteriorate the health status of the
patient. The article will show us how the mental state of a nurse suffering from job burnout

affects their attendance to patients leading to negative health outcomes. Hall’s article explains
why nurse burnout endangers patient safety and contributes to the poor-quality services
delivered. Ribeiro’s article emphasizes on how nurse burnout is a prevalent issue in hospitals by
highlighting the causes of nurse burnout. Keykaleh’s article seeks to establish a relationship
between job burnout in nurses and patient safety. It seeks to expound on the effects of nurse job
burnout on patient safety. These articles will answer the PICOT question by identifying the
presence of job burnout in nurses and investigating its effects on patients. Hall and Keykaleh’s
article will be used to investigate the impacts of job burnout on patient safety. Babeiamiri’s and
Ribeiro’s articles investigate if there is a linear relationship between patient safety and job
burnout. The articles compare previous articles made on the topic to find out the effects of job
burnout on patient recovery (Ribeiro, 2014).
Method of Study:
Robeiro (2014), uses the Maslach Burnout Inventory to assess Burnout syndrome on 188
nurses. The MBI is essential in measuring the burnout levels of nurses. However, the method is
only limited to measuring and identifying burnout but doesn’t consider the underlying factors
causing them. Hall’s article uses a systematic research review of 46 studies. It seeks to determine
whether there is a relationship between the well-being of medical personnel and patient safety.
The method allows the researcher to investigate numerous studies done on the topic thus is able
to give more conclusive results. However, the immense data being investigated makes the
method cumbersome to use. Babeiamiri uses the qualitative research method with the data being
analyzed using SPSS software. The qualitative research method uses numerical data for analysis,
making it quick and understandable. However, the little data provided by the numerical figures
do not provide sufficient information on the parameter under investigation. Keykaleh’s article is

a cross-sectional study of the impacts of nurse stress on patient safety. It collects data from 198
nurses from Hamadan’s three teaching hospitals using a questionnaire. Simple random sampling
was used in identifying the sample size. In the article, data analysis is done in two levels, namely
analysis statistics and descriptive statistics. The cross-sectional study method allows for
descriptive and analytical statistics making the process more credible (Keykaleh, 2018)
Results of Study
Hall’s article does a systematic review of 46 studies. The results of the review were 16/27
studies found a correlation between well-being, poor health, and patient safety, six studies found
a correlation in some MBI scales and one study found a correlation different from the other
findings. Results of thirty studies showed a correlation between job burnout and patient safety
with twenty-one studies getting a statistically significant correlation between the two variables
(Hall, 2016). Majority of the studies showed poor well being and nurse burnout as causing the
most harmful patient safety outcomes. Babeiamiri’s article found a strong correlation between
mental health and job burnout in nurses of 0.37. The mental health of nurses is negatively
correlated to their perceived social support of (-0.53) with α=0.01. The R-squared measures the
degree the dependent variable can be explained by the independent variable. Babeiamiri’s article
has an R-squared value of 0.549 which means 54.9\% of nurse’s mental health can be explained
by perceived social support, psychological hardiness, and job burnout (Babeiamiri, 2016).
Keykaleh’s article showed the mean of job stress has a mean of 1.75 and a standard deviation of
0.114. There is a linear relationship between patient safety and job stress. However, the
spearman’s correlation coefficient establishes there isn’t a relationship between patient safety
and job stress. Its results were r=0.007 and p=0.919. The population characteristics investigated
by the article showed a relationship between nurse stress and marital status. Single personnel

tended to use work as a distraction leading to overworking while others took numerous shifts to
be able to meet their current needs.
Hall and Babeiamiri’s studies show a significant correlation between nurse burnout and
wellbeing. Nurse well-being encompasses the mental state of the nurse. When a nurse is not well,
they tend to make medical errors that lead to the deterioration of the patient’s health and slow
recovery. Keykaleh’s and Ribeiro’s results show the prevalence of job burnout in nursing
practice. They show the underlying factors causing job burnout among nurses and their resultant
effects on the health of the patient
Ethical Considerations
The ethical considerations enforced in a study ensure they are conducted in a proper
manner that highlights the respondent’s rights. When conducting research, one should consider
the use of informed consent, respect, fidelity, and trust. These factors ensure that the study is
conducted ethically. Informed consent contains the right to autonomy of the respondent. It
dictates that the respondent has the right to opt if they can or cannot go through with the study by
signing or not signing it. Before signing the respondent is taken through the benefits, risks,
procedure and objective to make sure they are fully aware of the study and the commitments that
come with undertaking them. The study might contain sensitive patient information that can be
used against them, thus the high need for non-disclosure. The articles don’t contain any defining
personal information, such as names, to protect their anonymity and confidentiality (Grady,
2018).
These four studies enforce ethical considerations in conducting research. Keykaleh refers
to the sample size for 198 nurses in grouped terms. Personal information, such as the gender and
marital status of the respondent, is also grouped. Hall’s studies are generalized in terms of
5

cumulative numbers. The results of the study are also added as seen when he writes ‘16/27
studies showed a positive correlation between well-being and patient health status’. Babeiamiri
and Ribeiro give an informed consent form to the participants to sign before starting the study.
The consent form gives the respondent the free will to choose whether to undertake the study or
not. Before starting the study, the authors give a short summary of the benefits, implications,
objectives and goals of the study on themselves and the population as a whole.
Outcomes Comparison
The PICOT question’s outcome was the recovery rate of patients being attended to by nurses
suffering from burnout was slower than those of nurses not suffering from burnout. The question
seeks to explore the negative effects of burnout on the patient’s health. Hall, Babeiamiri and
Keykaleh articles show burnout having negative effects on the health status of the patient. Nurses
suffering from job burnout caused by lack of mental health, general wellbeing and long work
shifts tend to make medical mistakes when attending to their patients, thus the negative health
outcomes.
