Persuasive Speech
Title: Supporting the homeless.
Speaker:
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to support programs that help homelessness in Los
Angeles.
Introduction: Ask my audience to close their eyes and imagine being homeless
1. Attention Getter: Ever since we were young, we have had a place to sleep and protect
ourselves from the harsh weather, and I am sure that some of us here are thinking of the
time they will reach home, just to lie on their bed and watch a movie or to have their
favorite meal.
2. Central Idea: Being homeless is one of the most challenging things that a human being
can experience in their lifetime. This is due to the fact that it comes with various
challenges, especially getting access to food, health, and clothing. Although the majority
of them have learned to survive in the streets, they are exposed every day to accidents
and harsh weather conditions, which then calls for our support to help them have a better
life.

3. Credibility Statement: According to Flaming and Gary, the number of homeless
individuals in Los Angeles over the last four years has grown by 33\%. Besides, the Los
Angeles Homeless Services Authority has indicated that 60000 individuals every night in
the area are homeless (Flaming and Gary). These people spend their nights in areas
considered not fit for human habitation such as streets, transport hubs, and abandoned
buildings, with some having an opportunity to have a temporary shelter. These places are
not safe at all, and that gives us a reason as humans to stand and help one another in a
way we can to make a difference in someones life.
4. Preview of Points: So today, we are going to discuss the reasons why individuals
become homeless, why they need our help, and how we can support them.
Body:
1. Main Point 1: Causes
a. Lack of enough money has been considered to be the primary cause, with the majority of
the individuals claiming unavailability of well-paying jobs. Thus, being homeless does
not mean that these individuals might not be working; it is because their pay is not
enough to pay rent as well as gather for other needs. However, others lose their jobs, and
they cannot sustain themselves, and that is the reason they go to the streets.
b. Secondly, mental disability has also contributed significantly contributed to
homelessness. Besides, most of the individuals do not have proper access to healthcare,
which then increases their complications. According to Flaming and Gary, 21\% of the
newly homeless individuals result from mental issues, with 55\% of the mental cases
Shirazy 3!
resulting from being homeless for a more extended period. Therefore, most of the
homeless cases are inevitable and are not chosen by the victims.
c. Thirdly, the majority of houses in the city are privately owned, with few being subsidized
by the government. This indicates that most of the homes are set at the free market rate,
which is always high.
(Transition: Now that we have learned about the causes, let us inform ourselves why we
should support them)
2. Main Point 1: There are many homeless people, what can we do to help and why?
a. The majority of individuals in the street are not there because they chose to live in such
conditions but the issue of affordability, together with having nowhere else to go. For
instance, after a loss of a parent, divorce, and job loss, among others. So as humans, we
always require one another when we are in need, and that is what they believe we will
one day do to make a difference in their lives (Tinoco). One of the most important things
we should always consider is the fact that the next person may not choose to help, so it is
up to you because they are like us.
b. Apart from that, the homeless are always exposed to severe weather conditions, which
are not suitable for their health, and they can only have a brighter future if we come
together to help them. One great thing about giving is that it makes us feel better even if
we do not have much to offer. Besides, most of the donation programs supporting the
homeless give us an opportunity to help others in need.
c. Also, helping the homeless giving them hope that someone understands their challenges.
Therefore, as we lie comfortably on our beds, let us always remember that someone is out
Shirazy 4!
in the cold and is waiting for us to change their lives. In a poll that was conducted by the
United Way, the top concern for Los Angeles was the homeless (Aron). Thus, indicating
that it is an issue that needs us to offer what we can.
(Transition: Now that we understand the reasons to help the homeless, let us move to ways
we can provide our support)
3. Main Point 1: What ways can we support them
a. First, advocating for affordable housing and renters rights. Our participation in meeting
that aim to promote more allocation of resources to the homeless is one of the ways we
can take up the role (Walker). It also contributes to the development of policies that will
enhance the development of affordable housing as well as those that promote the rights of
those renting them.
b. Secondly, giving both monetary and in-kind donations is also another strategy to offer our
support. These donations are usually used to supporting the provision of better shelters as
well an essential needs to those who are more disadvantaged.
c. Thirdly, being a volunteer to help them is also the right way of giving support to the
programs. Today most of the Skid Row shelters have come up with volunteer orientations
monthly, and I encourage each one of us to sign up if possible. This is all about giving
support.
Conclusion:
1. Summary: Homelessness is a significant concern in Los Angeles because of the
increasing number of individuals becoming homeless as time passes. It is one of the
Shirazy 5!
challenging situations facing the victims because of the exposure to adverse weather
conditions as well as accidents in the streets. Besides, it becomes more difficult to have
access to health, food, and clothing, which are essential human needs.
2. Review: Due to the challenges facing the individuals, it is always crucial for us to take up
the role of helping them to facilitate their well-being. This will involve consideration of
the fact that the homeless need us, and we can provide our support through donating to
the programs helping the homeless, volunteering, and advocating for policies that will
promote better life to them.
3. Tie to the Introduction: Therefore, as you go home and lie in your bed or eat your
favorite meal, remember that someone needs your support in any way you can.
4. Creative Conclusion Thought: Today, let us start a chain of supporting the homeless
programs in the way we can. Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa, once
said that What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference
we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we
lead, thus, let make a change (Goalcast).
