Fugitive from a Chain Gang Journal Response
SUMMARY
RESPONSE
Intro-war ship returns-newspaper headlines
Newspaper headlines used to explain background or setting
like a lot of the other films we’ve watched
James family and his former boss welcome him as he gets off
the train from war and boss offers him his job back
Ironic that he just told his army pals that he wanted to follow
his dream of working as engineer but then his old boss and his
family are immediately pushing him back into the factory.
The blonde girl waiting for him looks like all the blonde short
curly haired girls from the movies made in the 30’s.
James desire to “get away from routine” is 1st brought up.
James goes back to factory clerical job at the urge of his
family, his desk sits in front of a window with a clear view of
a new bridge being built
Sets up a situation where he has to constantly face the fact
that he’s not living his dream
To show transition to each new city they use a map to trace
his travels interspersed with a shot of the mode of
transportation used to get there (New England→New
Orleans→OshKosh, Ship→Train→Walking)
Interesting way to get through space and time without
spending time explaining in dialogue or showing in scenes.
He tries to sell his army medal but the shop has too many of
them already
Shows the scarcity of jobs that the men who came back from
war faced
Meets Foster in motel(?) and they go to diner together.
Muni’s eyes light p at sight of the burgers grilling.
Foster sticks the place up.
Desperate times, Foster dies and Muni goes to prison all for
$5.
Why did Muni run? Or not say anything in his defense?
Chain gang camp.
Highlights bad parts of prison camp (inedible food, cruel
violent guards, etc)
Loading trucks scene. Blacks have their own truck.
Seems like he is back in army-like situation with all the men
being forced to walk in line and follow orders
Shows the racial segregation of the camp (and of the time)
Warden is whipping men but you just see the shadow of him
doing it and hear the whipping sound
Production code censoring the depiction of graphic images.
Next scene follows a transition sequence of calendar days
being torn off to show time passed. Muni and a few of the
guys watch a prisoner get released and another get taken out
in coffin. Muni starts talking about escape.
The scene highlights the hopelessness of the situation
because the guard tells the released prisoner he’ll be back—
makes it seem like the only way out is dying or leaving only to
return later
Chain gang assigned to railroad work. Buck (who never
misses) hits Muni’s shackles to loosen them for him so he can
try and escape
Escape seems to be James thing-escape routine, escape from
hold up and police, escape from chain gang
From ship to train to walking shows that as he has to keep
leaving to find work he’s obviously struggling more with
money each time.

SUMMARY
RESPONSE
“Getting outta here”- Muni to guard
Double meaning-getting out of the line up but really getting
out of the chain gang all together
Muni uses reed to hide under water and breath which makes
the bloodhounds lose his trail
I know I’ve seen this tactic parodied in another film, which
made it seem ridiculous but here it comes off like it’s actually
plausible and brilliant really
Muni gets a shave at barber shop where a cop comes in
talking about his escape and even describing him but Muni
asks for a towel to cover his face
Dumb, ineffective them comes up like other movies.
Another Scarface-esque shaving scene.
After shave barber says “how was it, close enough?” and
Muni replies “Plenty!”
Double meaning—plenty close to getting caught
Muni at train station, orders 2 hamburgers, police captain
and his men show up and chase the wrong man.
2 hamburgers are all he wanted before and it landed him on
the chain gang. Dumb, ineffective cops.
Paychecks shown to show him moving up the ladder in his
construction and engineering jobs
I like this transition, it’s clever like the other ones.
Finally living his dream job.
Marie tells Muni he’ll be sorry some day after he tells her he
doesn’t love her.
Marie looks just like the blonde girls from the other movies
and especially from the earlier scenes (train station girl and
Red’s prostitute girl). Also, foreshadowing of her betraying
him shown here.
Later she blackmails him into marrying her when she finds
out about chain gang.
This time his escape is again denied (he was about to leave
her) and he is sentenced to an unhappy marriage which is
nearly as miserable a fate as the chain gang
later you see that Marie is even more unlikable-she’s a durnk
and a cheater too
Muni meets another blonde girl at a nightclub and they go to
a secluded spot and talk about making a getaway and
“getting out of here”
I couldn’t even tell at first that the girl wasn’t Marie because
again this 4th blonde girl looks the same as the first 3.
Also , the escape theme and nightclub scene show up.
Marie turns him in, he fights extradition until they tell him
they’ll give him a pardon if he serves 90 days doing a clerical
job on the chain gang
Clerical job again offered as some kind of compromise that he
should be happy to have but both times it doesn’t turn out
the way it’s supposed t.
Back in prison, shows the chalk board with count of 34 whites
and 69 negroes.
Racial segregation shown again, also I think it’s obviously
trying to give message that blacks are more likely to be
criminals which is a racist stereotype.
State lied and goes back on word, gives him 9 more months,
later denies him again and gives him 9 years
State shown as bad guy and Muni as good guy who
voluntarily agreed to come back because he trusted them.
90 days→9 months→9 years.

SUMMARY
Car chase scene with Bomber and Muni. Bomber says
“getting out” as he falls off truck dead after being shot, Muni
goes back for him to see if he’s still alive and can help
RESPONSE
“getting out” used again as double meaning
Muni again comes off as good guy who obviously doesn’t
deserve to be in prison
Muni uses dynamite to blow up bridge and stop the cops
from catching him
Seems to symbolize him blowing up his dream and his chance
of ever being able to live a happy carefree life as a bridge
builder
Cops again shown dumb and ineffective in catching him
Final scene-goes to Marie after long period of hiding out,
hears a loud noise and gets frightened, backs up into the
darkness with his famous line “I steal” when asked how he
gets by
In the beginning he was jumpy about loud noises because it
remeinded him of the war and gunfire and bombing, but now it
is scary because he is constantly trying to not get caught.
The system turned an innocent man into a criminal.
