You’ve discovered a new word or phrase used among your college friends and acquaintances, and you’re thrilled to realize it’s virgin territory as far as slang dictionaries are concerned. You decide to write an article of around four pages to submit to the California Journal of Slang in order to reveal this phrase to the culture at large. In the article, you will want to do the following: 1. Definition and Grammatical Function: Define the word or phrase, noting its various grammatical functions. 2. Demographics for the Term: Identify the users of the word or phrase, as well as how age, sex, or other demographic features influence either the way the phrase is used or its meaning. 3. Rhetorical/Social Context: Describe several social situations in which the word or phrase might be employed, as well as how different contexts affect how the word or phrase is used. 4. Origin: Speculate as to the origin of the word or phrase. 5. Longevity: Estimate whether you believe the expression is here to stay or just passing through the language. Justify your answer. Definition The phrase to pop off has five different definitions when taken by its vernacular meaning, and this paper shall focus primarily on one of them. From the Oxford English Dictionary, the literal definition of pop off is to remove an object from another in a fashion where it comes loose abruptly, often accompanied by a popping sound. The dictionary also includes two slang meanings for pop off: (1) as a verb: to speak angrily or passionately, and (2) as a verb: to die. The three remaining slang definitions are (3) a verb: to leave (a place), (4) as an imperative: to tell someone to be quiet, and (5) a verb: an action or event starting. This last definition is the one this paper shall discuss. For a more specific definition, pop off in the fifth order means something that has likely been coming for a long time finally begins. It has connotations of intense emotion, either anger, frustration, and tension; or joy, excitement, and celebration, and these high-energy situations naturally insinuate high-energy action or activities occurring as a result of things popping off. For example, at a Thanksgiving dinner where family is over, if this family happens to be full of opinionated people with different beliefs, you might turn to your cousin and ask, “when do you think everything will pop off?” In this case, you are anticipating loud and passionate arguing, and when “everything pops off,” the yelling will start and, distracted, your aunt will forget to pass you the stuffing. Synonyms of pop off in this form include: start, begin, happen, activate, explode (colloquially). Grammatical Function Pop off is a term comprised of the base form of pop, an onomatopoeia meaning to make a small exploding noise, and the preposition off. Pop off usually functions as an intransitive phrasal verb, such as in“things will pop off,”or as a predicate adjective, such as in“things are popping off.” It can appear in the forms of a past participle (popped off), present participle (popping off), and conjugations of its base form (pop off), and is often preceded by auxiliary words to modify the tense. The form of the phrase does not affect its meaning outside of changing the tense. The phrase’s least common function is that of a noun, in the form of a gerund, such as in “what started all this popping off?” and its most common function is that of a predicate adjective. As a predicate adjective, pop off is most often found in SLVPA sentences such “everything is popping off.” For this usage, pop off is often found at the end of clauses, or at least after the subject and a linking verb. There may also be auxiliaries between the subject and the phrase to change the tense, such as in “things will be popping off.” Pop off can also be used as part of prepositional phrases, such as “when everything pops off” or “before everything starts popping off.” These prepositional phrases would most likely be found before or after the main clause, separated from it by a comma. Within the prepositional phrase, the term will most likely be located at the end. In phrases, pop off is patterned with a subject and linking verb just as it is in a main clause. In SLVPA sentences, pop off can take any of the participle forms mentioned earlier, and, as seen in “things are going to pop off,” the term can also appear as an infinitive. In these cases, the infinitive is functioning as an adjective. In most typical cases, whether it is used as a verb, predicate noun, or otherwise, pop off appears at the end of a phrase or sentence, after the noun or noun cluster to which it is attributed. Placing it elsewhere in a sentence will not change its meaning, if used correctly. The version of the word we are focusing on must be part of a larger sentence, but all the others can be uttered independently in their imperative forms. However, this is unlikely to happen for the first (1) slang definition, the one which means to speak. ... Purchase answer to see full attachment
