INTRODUCTION:
Can you imagine yourself without your social networking? Social networking now is a big part of our daily
life. It’s an obvious truth that Social networking sites really help everyone in everything. But it is also true that it has
many negative effects on every user. Privacy issue and mental health are some of the many negative effect of this. Our
private information and mental health are being taken while we are enjoying the use of social networking sites. “First
off, the use of social media has been shown to correlate with loneliness, with heavy users being twice as likely to report
social isolation. More time spent on the most commonly used social networks correlates to higher feelings of loneliness
and isolation. In my opinion, I believe the Facebook Twitter, Snapchat, or another social media app or website.
provokes an awful lot of negative self-comparison just to others and deciding that their lives must be happier or
better than yours. The problem is, even if you judge your life to be the better one, you’re still not likely to feel happy
about this, because any kind of self-comparison has a negative effect on one’s moods. And if you feel some envy while
you’re scrolling through your friends’ photos, you may be picking up on a real link between social media use and
depressed mood. Some evidence suggests the more time you spend on social media, the worse you’ll feel: of depression
The persons who use social media platforms most often have been shown to be three times as likely to harbor feelings
and anxiety. Her social media use is associated with higher anxiety. My THESIS will focus on the disadvantages of
social network sites.
Body 1:
Soeiro stated; in his article in Psychology Today. This clearly means that the more time a user uses social media the
more his/her mental health is at risk. It is stated also in “public health risk. Social media can exacerbate feelings of
disconnect (especially for youth with disabilities), and put children at higher risk for depression, low self-esteem, and
eating disorders. The passive consumption of social media (scanning posts without commenting) is related to
loneliness.” This shows that users tend to waste time in social media because they think that no one is there physically
to share their time with.
-“Young people today care about online privacy, but many lack the knowledge they need to protect themselves.
As part of a classroom exercise about online privacy at her Winnipeg high school, Canteris, 17, found more than 150
third-party apps (applications) had gained access to the information in her account. Its surprising, because half of them
I dont even know. I didnt know that I installed them, she says. [Its] very concerning, because I dont know what kind
of information they take from my Facebook account. According to a recent study, this is a lesson more
Canadian youth need to learn. Confusion about privacy policies. The survey, released by not-for-profit agency
MediaSmarts last month, says Canadian students between grades four and 11 are concerned about what companies do
with the information they post online, but many dont fully understand the policies that can help protect their privacy. In
fact, 68 percent of students believe that if a website simply has a privacy policy, it wont share their personal
information. At the same time, almost no Canadian students think marketing companies should be able to read their
social networking posts or track their locations. The discrepancy is clear: kids do not want to be tracked, but they may
not know how to avoid it. Angwin believes kids do care about online privacy, and in fact they actually spend more time
adjusting their privacy settings than even adults do. The problem is the knowledge gap between wanting to keep things
private and knowing how to do so. Leduc says, The majority of the students do not know anything about the privacy
policies, anything about what [third-party apps] are. Indeed, according to the MediaSmarts study, most Canadian
students say they have never had a privacy policy or terms of use agreement explained to them. Leduc says this is where
schools need to come in. Who is responsible for teaching the next generation about social media, about privacy
policies, about how marketing agencies are mining for your data? he asks. I dont think that parents are as tech savvy
as the younger generation, so Im a firm believer that if were not doing this in high school right now, who is? CBC
explained in their article in Gale in Context. This means that users really don’t know about how privacy policy works in
social networking sites. To support this statement, CON#18 from Procon.org stated, “Social media sites’ advertising
practices may constitute an invasion of privacy. An ExactTarget marketing report tells companies, When a user clicks on
a [Facebook] like button belonging to your brand, youre immediately granted access to additional information about
this customer, from school affiliation and workplace information to their birthdate and other things they like…
[M]arketers can access and leverage data in ways that will truly alarm customers. From social media sites, simple
algorithms can determine where you live, sexual orientation, personality traits, signs of depression, and alma maters
among other information, even if users put none of those data on their social media profiles.” This means that every
application or advertisements that we are clicking are collecting all information that they can collect.
3 - Shafer explained in her article that there are also positive effects from social networking sites. “Research has
begun to zero in on nearly every part of this spectrum, with findings that run from alarming (screen time is linked
to depression and suicide) to reassuring (many teens find social media empowering). But for those looking for a clear-cut
good or bad verdict on social media, the reality is that its a little of each — but generally a much more positive
experience than many parents might think. A new study finds that teenagers report feeling all kinds of positive and
negative emotions when describing the same social media experiences — posting selfies, Snapchatting, browsing videos
— but the majority rate their overall experiences as positive. Despite this variety of emotions, most teens described
their experiences in mainly positive terms, found Weinstein, who is a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard Graduate
School of Education. Yes, teens are aware of negative emotions — fear, distress, jealousy, but from their
perspective, feelings of connection, amusement, and inspiration also abound.” Procon.org also stated in PRO#7, “Being a
part of a social media site can increase a person’s quality of life and reduce the risk of health problems. Social media can
help improve life satisfaction, stroke recovery, memory retention, and overall well-being by providing users with a large
social group. Additionally, friends on social media can have a contagion effect, promoting and helping with exercise,
dieting, and smoking cessation goals.” It is true that there is this positive effect, but still we should focus on the
disadvantage that is what should concern us. Procon.org stated in CON#16 that, “Children may endanger themselves by
not understanding the public and viral nature of social media. The 2012 film Project X, about an out of control high
school house party due to social media promotion, prompted copycat parties across the US resulting in arrests for
vandalism, criminal trespassing, and other offenses. Up to 600 Dutch riot police had to be called in to break up a teens
birthday party to which about 30,000 people were accidentally invited after a Facebook post thought to be private went
viral. A similar incident happened in Los Angeles and resulted in the teen host beaten and hospitalized.” Same as CBC
written in their article, “The survey, released by not-for-profit agency MediaSmarts last month, says Canadian students
between grades four and 11 are concerned about what companies do with the information they post online, but many
dont fully understand the policies that can help protect their privacy. In fact, 68 percent of students believe that if a
website simply has a privacy policy, it wont share their personal information.” This means that they are not really aware
of how privacy policy works.
We cannot deny that social networking sites are really helpful, but we should also keep in mind that we are not
fully using it freely. While we are enjoying the use of it we are putting our privacy and mental health at risk. As Soeiro
stated in his account, “So consider taking a break from social media. You won’t even have to quit entirely; studies show
that just avoiding Facebook for a short time can provide a significant boost to a person’s sense of well-being.” We should
always be careful on what information we will put every time we will click on it and try to minimize the use of it.

OUTLINE
INTRODUCTION: I will talk about the negative effects of social networking on us. My THESIS
will focus on the disadvantages of social network sites.
BODY 1: I will talk about “Con 14: People who use social media are prone to social isolation.”
(procon.org) and I will also cite Serio’s article how SNS can cause isolation.
BODY 2: I will discuss “Con 18: Social media sites’ advertising practices may constitute an
invasion of privacy.” (procon.org) and I will also cite “Social media privacy”. This means that
every application or advertisements that we are using are collecting all the information that we
are putting in social media. So, it is always better to be careful on what we are clicking in social
networking sites.
BODY 3: This will be my counter-argument and rebuttal. I will cite “Pro 7: Being a part of a social
media site can increase a person’s quality of life and reduce the risk of health problems.”
(procon.org) and briefly cite Shaefer article about the benefits, But I will show why I disagree with
them and why I believe there are more disadvantages. I will use Procon.org to help me do the
rebuttal.
CONCLUSION:
I will restate my thesis and make a suggestion that we spend less time on SNS. It is better that we
minimize our time using networking sites and we should always be careful on what information
we will put every time we will click on it.
