Strategic Change Management
Assignment Task: Read the following Scenario, and prepare a Report with the guidelines
provided.
Scenario: Learners should select an organisation in which they are working/ or worked before/
or any other organisation of their choice. The learner should discuss any major issue(s) related
to strategic change which happened/ or is likely to happen within the chosen organisation, and
thereafter develop model(s) for change, which helped/ or will help the organisation to bring out
a smooth change in the business unit. The learner needs to also show how the organisation can
lead its stakeholders in developing and adopting the strategy for change discussed above, as
well as how they plan to implement the chosen model for change. The answers to the questions
below will be written in the form of a report, which needs to start with an introduction, which
will also clearly bring about the change envisaged and the background to change. Thereafter all
questions should be answered in the report, followed by logical conclusions and
recommendations
The report should include the following:
1. Executive Summary [8 Marks]
2. Introduction of the Chosen Organization and background to change [7 Marks]
3. Examine the need for change in the organization. Assess the factors that drive the need for
strategic change and critically evaluate the resource implications for not responding to
these changes. [30 Marks]
4. Explain any two change management models and evaluate the relevance of these models in
the chosen organization. [20 Marks]
5. Develop a change management strategy involving the stakeholders, and also devise
strategies to overcome resistance. [10 Marks]
The students need to address part 5 as a report as well as a PowerPoint presentation (max
10 slides and 10 minutes duration) clearly discussing the change management strategy
and the implications for all relevant stakeholders. Strategies to overcome resistance must
be identified and discussed comprehensively. Any videos embedded in the presentation
should be a minute or less in duration and a reference list must be provided at the end of
the ppt. The snippets of the ppts must be attached as appendix to the main word document.
The students are going to be evaluated on 3 criteria; content, delivery and engagement.
(15 Marks)
6. Conclusions and recommendations. [10 Marks]
7. References (Adhering to Harvard Referencing Format)
The report shall not exceed 6,000 words and should include relevant examples and
illustrations.

1. Executive Summary
Change is vital for every organization. The slightest complacency in today’s rapidly changing
economic and social scenario and the perception of any organization that its position is secure
could prove to be its undoing. The environment today is so fast moving that managements must
constantly revise their strategies to keep up with the changes around them. Technology is
changing, the economy is changing, the demographic character of the population is changing,
and customer trends are changing. Businesses that fail to recognize the need for change will be
overtaken within no time. The internet revolution is hugely responsible for the rise in customer
awareness and the change in consumer trends. Every organization must embrace change to
survive.
It is not easy to bring about change in any organization because there is always resistance to
change. So, the first step is to recognize the need for change, then prepare for the change, action
the change, maintain the change and take steps to ensure that the change is permanent.
I have chosen Facebook as the organization that I would like to study to implement strategic
change.
Facebook has made a meteoric rise since the 15 years of it’s inception.
What started off in a university dorm room of a young Harvard student as FaceMash.com
transformed into the now ubiquitous Facebook.com and changed the face of social media
forever. As of 2019, Facebook is ranked as the 6th largest company in the world with a market
value of 512 billion dollars and has 2.41 billion monthly active users. The success of Facebook
inspired other social media sites to come up and pose a threat to Facebook. Although
Facebook’s annual revenue has been rising constantly over the years, there is a need for change
in the strategy as the competition is growing in the form of Twitter, LinkedIn, Snapchat,
Pinterest, Reddit and other platforms.
With the increasing awareness of social media users about privacy and security of data, there
is an immediate need to change the current strategy by analyzing the current strategies,
identifying the problems and establishing the need for a change. Once all stakeholders
recognize the need for change, a positive plan can be put in place. A huge fine of $ 5 billion is
looming over Facebook over privacy violations. It has been reported that US regulators have
reportedly voted to fine Facebook for data breaches. Last year, there were allegations that
Facebook shared personal data with Cambridge Analytica. The change that I would propose is
to focus on strengthening the security and privacy issues by revamping the current security and
privacy policies. This will ensure that Facebook remains the number one and the most trusted
social media site.
2.1 Introduction
Facebook is an interactive web-based network that enables users to share data, media and ideas
across a broad region using mobile phones, personal computers and other devices. It acts as a
link across political, economic and geographical boundaries amongst people with shared
interests. Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Oculus are products of Facebook.
Originally called FaceMash, Facebook was established in 2003 by former Harvard student
Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommate and fellow Harvard students. He ran it as one of
his hobby projects with Eduardo Savers economic assistance. The website that he designed
allowed visitors to compare pictures of two female students’ side by side. It had 22,000 photo
views by 500 visitors in just the first four hours of going live. FaceMash went on to improvise
into Facebook in 2004 and within months, the key concept of Facebook spread like wildfire
through the dorms of Harvard. It then branched out to Columbia, Stanford and Yale where too
it was widely supported. Eventually, membership was extended to the remaining Ivy League
colleges, MIT, other higher education institutes and finally high school students. Soon after,
two other fellow student colleagues, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes joined Mark
Zuckerberg to help him develop the website further. Months later, both Mark and Dustin
dropped out of Harvard to run Facebook full time.
As of 2006, anyone over 13 years of age can register on Facebook, in accordance with local
laws. Facebook is blocked in North Korea and China. It has 2.41 billion monthly active users
and 39,651 employees around the world, as of June 2019 (CNN, 2019). Every day, more than
35 million users update their status, with more than 55 million updates every day. Every month,
more than 2.5 billion images are uploaded to Facebook. The company is headquartered in
Menlo Park, California. The revenue has grown from $ 153 million in 2007 to US$ 55.838
billion as of 2018
Figure 1- Revenue of Facebook
(Mactrotrends, 2015)
The graph below shows the phenomenal growth of Facebook users.
Figure 2- Facebook Monthly Users
( The Nexrex, 2017)
Access to Facebook is free of charge. The revenue is generated from advertisements on the
website. Zuckerberg’ insisted that members had to be transparent with their identities. It was
noticed that peer to peer connectivity amongst users made it easier for businesses to connect
with users. (Hall, 2015). A new era of consumer awareness had dawned. Procter and Gamble
which is a household product manufacturer, attracted 14,000 people to a promotional event by
“expressing affinity” with a tooth whitening product.
In February 2012, Facebook filed to be a public company. It’s IPO raised $$ 16 billion and
gave it a total market value of $102.4 billion.
2.2 Background to Change
Privacy issues have been a problem for Facebook throughout. The first problem arose with the
launch of News Feed which allowed users to see every change that friends had made to their
pages. Protests forced them to implement privacy controls. The launch of Beacon in 2007
allowed users to see what products their friends had bought from participating companies.
Facebook faced criticism for this as well as users felt their privacy was infringed upon. A
survey in 2010, put Facebook in the bottom 5 percent of companies in customer satisfaction
because of privacy issues
Facebook has been increasingly used in political movements. From the US Presidential
elections, The Problems regarding Privacy
Facebook has witnessed a cascade of security issues and privacy scandals since the beginning
of 2018. The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has said that Facebook will pay a record
$5bn fine to address privacy issues. In March 2019, Cambridge Analytica collected 87 million
users private Facebook information to profile and target political advertising users. In June
2019, a bug caused a glitch which published the posts of 14 million users that were intended to
be private.
3. Need for Change
3.1 SWOT Analysis
The SWOT analysis mentioned below examines the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and
threats affecting the company.
Figure 3 – SWOT Analysis of Facebook
3.2 PESTLE Analysis
The company’s macro – economic factors are assessed using the PESTLE analysis. Facebook
is the top player in the social media market. It maintains it’s position through investment in
Research and Development, popularity and brand development. The main drivers of change
are defined using the PESTLE analysis. It shows the external opportunities and threats in
Facebooks macro - environment and examines how these factors have influenced or are likely
to influence the performance of Facebook at present or in the future.
Political Factors
Shows the degree to which government intervention and influence in the economy affects
Facebook directly and indirectly in the form of taxes, tariffs, restrictions, labor laws, political
stability, human rights, etc.
Political agendas and ties - Facebook pushes it’s own agenda. It has developed a Political
Action Committee to strengthen political connections with Washington D.C. The platform can
easily influence individuals’ beliefs on politics, government, and the elections since it has a
stronghold on user data and opinions.
Governmental support for globalization - Facebook has the chance to expand its social
media and display marketing services globally because many governments are opening their
economies to support globalization.
Political barriers in China, Iran and South Korea - Facebook is seen as a tool for pushing
certain agendas and helping individuals unite against political parties in conservative,
traditionalist nations. Some nations have limited Facebook access to their citizens to avoid
individuals from uniting as well as spreading misinformation. Facebook loses it’s business in
China, North Korea and Iran.
Political action on online data- Because Facebook is an is an open forum for people to
exchange views, voice disagreement with government policies and corrupt practices around
the world, some government bodies may see it as a threat and have some rules drawn up for
operation in their countries.
US- China trade tensions - Beijings political interference has locked Facebook out of the
most populous nation in the world. The conflicts between the United States and China have
made the problem worse, as the both are fighting for the dominance of the technology industry.
Tariff taxes worth $300 billion on each others products have already been exchanged by the
two nations with Donald Trump threatening extra tariffs in the future. Facebook buys
components for global cloud computing from China. High tariffs will result In finding
alternative suppliers or face increased prices. Both of which will affect profits of Facebook.
Economic Factors
Economic factors such as exchange rates, business cycles, cost of labor, tax rates, availability
of credit, differential economic growth rates, purchasing power, income of the population etc.
affect Facebook directly.
Global economic impact – Facebook acts as a catalyst for economic activity. It has enabled
227-billion-dollar worth economic impact and affected 4.5 million jobs globally in 2014.
(Deloitte, 2015). Facebook initiates economic activity as it enables businesses to have access
to markets in and customers in any part of the world.
Figure 4 – Global Economic Impact of Facebook
(Deloitte, 2015)
Exchange rates – Facebook Facebook has reportedly faced a loss or revenue due to fluctuating
exchange rates. Overall revenue would have been $190 million higher, if not for foreign
currency and the general strengthening of the dollar outside the United States, said Facebook
Chief Financial Officer Dave Wehner. (Poletti, 2015)
A platform for business – Facebook is not just a portal for communication and sharing media,
it is also a platform for business. Companies have paid advertisements on Facebook pages.
Users have access to these advertisements for products. Companies can pay to “boost” posts to
reach more audiences. Facebook is also used by HR recruiters for hiring personnel.
Low unemployment rates in the US – Due to low unemployment rates, people have income
and disposable income. This gives people access to devices that enable access to Facebook for
communication, media sharing and business.
Falling stock prices – Facebook has seen a downslide in stock prices. Advertisers are losing
faith in the company. This fall in stock prices is due to the privacy breach, fake news scandals,
it’s association with Definers Public Affairs, resigning executives of WhatAapp and Instagram,
publishing of Community Standards, the Cambridge Analytica scandal and news feed changes.
Investors are fearing from investing in the company.
Figure 5- Facebook’s falling stock prices
(Tradingview, 2019)
Social Factors
Social factors include the cultural and demographic aspects like safety, health consciousness,
literacy, population, age of the population, career attitudes, environmentalism, etc. The use of
Facebook depends on the prevailing trends in the social factors of the economy. It affects the
operations of the company.
Increasing preference for high quality services – With an increase in income, lifestyle
changes occur, and people demand for better quality services. Same applies to Facebook.
People expect Facebook to maintain it’s standards and provid ...
