Mary Ellen was orphaned and later adopted by a Manhattan couple. After her adoptive father passed soon after, the adoptive mother began physically abusing the little girl. Mary Ellen’s caseworker, Etta Wheeler, sought the help of the ASPCA. The ASPCA’s founder recruited a lawyer who argued that people were part of the animal kingdom and deserved protection. Mary Ellen’s mother was tried and convicted. The NY Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was established.
