They often hold numerous amounts of products for customers. The stores bear the name “big box” because of their windowless structure that makes a person feel like they are in a large container. These retailers try to achieve economies of scale by selling large volumes of products. Due to this fact, they make a tiny amount of profit for every product. For the consumer, the price of the product will be considerably not expensive. These stores are in large buildings with thousands of square feet. Examples of such stores are Walmart and Ikea. Companies that own big box stores try to ensure that the buyer can find everything that they need. They often have groceries, home ware, food items, clothes, electronics, and furniture. The companies ensure that their prices are less expensive than at smaller trade shops. These shops also come with their host of problems like changing neighborhoods and less personalized customer service. Big box retailers are good, because they offer a net benefit to the stakeholders due to their price, providing employment, and a constructive shopping experience. The stores have had a positive effect on retailers from all over the world because of their prices. People can now access products for a small cost. These stores aim to move product, and they often have a discount. For the consumer, this is an advantage. Life is expensive, and most households aim to reduce their spending as much as possible. The company also avoids loss because they make use of economies of scale. To understand this, we can sue an example of a big box store A and an ordinary Supermarket B. Shop A can sell a tissue paper set for USD 3 while shop B may sell it for USD 5. However, shop A will get 600 customers in a day buying that product while shop B may get 10. Due to economies of scale, shop A has a smaller profit margin but a larger overall revenue. What matters to businesses is that they make a profit. Therefore, superstores aim to move inventory as much as possible, and they attract customers with their small prices. These stores offer lower prices, and this ensures that the consumer can get everything that they need while saving some money. However, not has a low relative cost in the store. Some people even argue that such shops cause them to overspend because of the variety of items and services. However, on average, people can save money when they shop for a variety of things. They often have good discounts that people can take advantage. Superstores help the low-income economy. Some people cannot afford to buy high-quality products because they are expensive. However, they can lower price items at these stores. These stores do not charge people membership fees for them to enjoy the shopping experience. Secondly, these stores offer employment to the middle class. For these outlets to be operational, they need a significant workforce. They employ thousands of employees to help with the everyday running of the business. They often hire from the community around them. Such enterprises create a positive externality by providing jobs to people who would otherwise have lacked jobs. However, people have claimed that some stores have used child labor. For example, there was a claim that some shops like Walmart source some of their clothing section items from sweatshops in Asia. For the store to be beneficial, they have to ensure that they only hire people in a certain age bracket. They should also pay all their employees. These stores generate a lot of tax. Some of these outlets can help improve their area through corporate social responsibility. They can use their taxes to build roads and improve the environment. Some of these stores give back to society as they make a lot of profits. For example, Walmart donates to childcare, healthcare, and the military. Walmart is a big supporter of children’s education, and they often offer items like backpacks and financial aid (Freedman 45). These companies also help with disaster relief during floods, earthquakes, and such calamities. These actions show that the company has a positive net effect on the lives of the community. The next reason why big stores assist the stakeholders is that they enhance the shopping experience. People can find everything that they need on the premises. People often buy their groceries, food, home ware, furniture, and electronics here. This convenience enhances the purchasing experience (Hausman 23). Often, people would have to buy their things in batches because they have to travel from one store to the next. With this system, life becomes a bit bearable. A store like Walmart has all the supplies that people need like pet goods, bathroom products, cosmetics, financial services, and care items. Walmart has built brand loyalty, and a significant percentage of people always shop there (Freedman 55). These stores often have large things that people may not find in their local stores. For example, smaller stores would only have specific goods. At these superstores, people can get bigger things like couches, beds, and equipment. The stores also help families who are bulk shopping. Some people buy their nonperishable items in bulk. They can be sure that they will find everything they need at these stores. When it comes to handiness, most of these stores operate 24 hours, and people can get the supplies that they need at night. Smaller shopping stores close at night. When these stores come up, more businesses come up. Many people travel from neighboring regions to buy their supplies. This tactic is a smart way to attract customers. Some of these buyers will also spend money at local hubs and it improves business. Some people may argue that such stores stifle competing enterprises (Johnson 24). While this is true, it still brings an influx of newer customers from surrounding areas. However, competition exists in every industry. While big-box stores also have their disadvantages, they have improved people’s livelihoods by providing jobs, helping people save money, and enhancing the shopping experience. The good outweighs the bad. When a store like Walmart opened up in a new region, they often hire their workers from the neighboring community. Such shops need thousands of employees and mass hiring can have a positive effect on the region’s unemployment. Such situations also attract businesses to set up shop because of the influx of new customers from neighboring regions. These stores help people save money because their products are cheaper. For a middle-class household on a budget, this would be a great place to shop for household items. This provision ensures that people save money that they should use for other services that they need. Such shops also enhance the experience because they have everything under one roof. People are always sure that they will find what they are looking for in the store. They save people time from moving from shop to shop. Such shops come with negative externalities, but the merits are greater than the demerits. Such shops also give back and enhance the community around them.
