Initial Post 1:
Editorial thinking is defined as the visualization of the data in the right format using the charts
with the data given. In the chapter, the author (Kirk, 2018) explains how the editorial thinking
comes into a picture using the analysis angles. This plays a vital role in the pictorial representation
of the data, meaning changes, and the data can be visualized as irrelevant. For example, we have
many visual representation charts, such as bar, pie, images, maps. While representing the collected
data, the accurate analysis of picking the chart (Kirk, 2018) is critical as various charts have
different purposes of the representation.
I think it is essential to use editorial thinking, as when I am working on my graph to
represent my work. The number of cases I have worked on I used the bar chart, which gave me the
representation. However, instead of using the bar when I tried to use the pie chart for the
representation, I have not much interest in the data, and I have not found all the information I am
looking for. Which are the comparisons between the services for which I have picked the cases to
work on? I have attached the graph which I have worked on for the visual representation.
Initial Post 2:
Editorial thinking involves deciding on a perspective that is offered by your data. This involves
deciding on the more relevant interesting content to portray to the audience. Although the idea of
data visualization is to convey data to your audience, showing too much data to your audience in
one chart, for instance, can be counterproductive because they can be overwhelmed by so much
information. Hence the need to only show a perspective in one chart. It is essential to know what
to include or exclude from the data because not all data is essential. However, the only caution is
not to filter data to the extent that the data could be distorted.
Editorial thinking also plays a vital role in determining what is more important than what
is less critical. This means focusing on which features of the display you should draw attention to.
It is essential to know how to present the data to your audience; otherwise, what would you
accomplish if the data you have cannot be represented in a way that the audience can benefit from.
Initial Post 3:
Selected Visual: I have selected the pie chart for my reflection from the chapter (Kirk, 2016).
Purpose of the Visual: The visual is to calculate the percentage as a whole, which is in the pie
chart. It is visualized as the 100\% and needs to divide the information based on the percentage. In
the chapter, the author has given the example of the voters in the UK elections 2015 (Kirk, 2016)
Data should be Compiled in the Selected Visual: There are three main rules for the pie chart
usage. Firstly, the data is calculated as 100\%. Secondly, there is no individual percentage as it is
calculated as the whole, and lastly, the values must represent the exclusive quantities (Kirk, 2016).
Data should not be Compiled in the Selected Visual: When using the pie charts, if there are
more categories, it will be difficult to calculate the percentage and represent it in the visual format.
Hence the pie chart can be used for the six or less numb of categories.
Steps to Avoid Visual Misleading: To avoid the visual misleading, we need to make sure there is
no overlapping of the same category and the percentage by using different color formats to
represent the categories so it can be visualized.
Initial Post 4:
Selected Visual: The fixture I have selected is Figure 6.34 Interactive Fixture Molecules
Purpose of the Visual: This visual aims to explore the perceived difficulty of fixtures across the
2013- 2014 premier league season.
Data should be Compiled in the Selected Visual: Matrix charts are used to compare two or more
groups of elements or elements within a single group.
Data should not be Compiled in the Selected Visual: Matrix charts are not used to show the
growth of a variable.
Things can Analyze from Matrix Chart: Data, Functions, Concepts, People, Materials,
Equipment, Actions.
Steps to Avoid Visual Misleading: In order to prevent making this data misleading, it is essential
to add some elements of color or symbol so that you get the users attention. This is to prevent
overwhelming the reader with the data. Another reason is that because so much data is usually
presented in a matrix chart, it is essential to keep the visual display of the graphs uncluttered and
straightforward.
