Writing an admission essay to a PhD program. I have a rough draft that needs worked. statement_of_purpose__idea_.docx Unformatted Attachment Preview Statement of purpose Family and friends call me John Lennon because I dream, and I dream big. I am the kind of person who sets goals, keeps trying until he achieves them, and then moves on to new goals. I am always looking to improve myself in anyway I can either through reading books, watching videos, attending conferences or taking classes. Recently, I attended an Electrical Engineering design class in which I learned more about Harmonics, Power factors, Short Circuits Analysis and Arc Flash Studies. The class gave me the motivation and drive to seek more structured knowledge of the Electrical Power Engineering domain. Realizing the importance of a strong Electrical knowledge base, I made sure to give 100\% of my attention at school to my classes. In all my college semesters, I have been member of the Dean’s list in which only the top students are invited. I always took my work very seriously and I always presented work that I was proud of. I reviewed chapters ahead of schedule and asked multiple questions in classes to ensure what I understood is right. In short, I did what I had to do to get the best of my education. Upon graduating from (insert school) back in (insert year), to maintain the same momentum and keep up with technology advancement, I made a promise to myself that for at least ten years, I would obtain one professional certificate related to my domain per calendar year. In fact, in (insert year) I was able to obtain my Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA), passed my Fundamental of Engineering (EIT) and Professional Engineering tests all within the same year. Now, fourteen years later, I am pursuing my third master’s degree that will bring me a lot closer to my ultimate goal, which is to become a very technically sound Professional Engineer. My Engineering degree has given a strong foundation to my analytical skills since Electrical Power Engineering involves a lot of long, complex and intricate calculations and application of advanced math skills. It has also assisted me in viewing projects from different angles and using my critical skills to evaluate, apply and verify designs to ensure project intents are met and clients are satisfied. My professional experience consists of working for two of the largest engineering group in the world, (insert company) and (insert company). I currently work for (insert company) where I design and manage the electrical scope of on campus projects. While my bachelor’s degree helped me greatly in managing engineering tasks, my two masters’ degrees provided me with the skills to manage the finance and people aspects of projects. I believe that this unique blend of educational background and working experiences has made me a qualified person for the Electrical Engineering Master’s program. It is my goal to build on the Electrical Engineering knowledge that I have gained at Northeastern University and through my working years. Being accepted to the Electrical Engineering Master’s Program at (insert school) would be an honor and is something I am really looking forward to. As I had already done before, twice, I know that it won’t be easy, and it won’t be quick but I deeply believe that my dedication and ambition will help me to stay focused and succeed in this program and to be a very proud (insert school) Alumni. My educational background consists • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering- (Insert school/ year) • Master’s Degree in Project Management- (Insert school/ year) • Master’s Degree in Business Administration- (Insert school/ year) • Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering- (Insert school/ year) Currently, I work as a Senior Manager for ( insert company) where I oversee the (insert description). My involvement in these projects includes both the technical side such as design, integration, testing, and validation of multiple engineering systems, as well as the managerial side which comprises of comprises schedule, financial planning, quality control, and contract negotiation. I always aim to develop and implement new processes to improve efficiency, and I collaborate with different entities across multiple departments and outside consultants. From my experience, I have noticed that in almost all projects, there tends to be a disconnect between Project Management and Systems Engineering. While there are few things they share in common such as Risk Management, and Task Allocation, each follows their own path to ensure that the design intent and project goal are satisfied at the end of the project. It is this gap between the two professions that I would like to research and find ways to bridge. Under your guidance, I would rely on my extensive experience as a senior engineering manager and consult with technical and educational experts. My plan is to not just view the situation from one specific angle but to have a full view to gain a full understanding of the situation. Another topic that I would like to research is the role of Commissioning in projects. As technology advances, the push for more sustainable, and energy-efficient engineering systems is greater than ever. This leads to more complex designs which in turn make the integration of these systems very difficult to accomplish. Having worked in the industry for more than 15 years, I can certainly relate to this matter. Thus my research topic would include the successful integration of multiple engineering systems. Finally, I just would like to say that I have really worked hard to get where I am. When I finished my bachelor’s degree I made a promise to myself to obtain a least one certificate per calendar year for 10 years, 14 years later and I am still going. I believe that I am a lifetime learner and being accepted to the doctorate program would be a great honor and is something that I am really looking forward to. I am a very motivated person. All my 3 masters were online and I have the self-discipline to stay focused and work hard. I know it wont be easy, and it will not be quick, but I deeply believe that my dedication and ambition will help me to stay driven and succeed in this program and be a very proud Old (insert school) ...
