DeShawn’s Dream
I’m DeShawn, I’m one of the best players in my high school. My position is the
quarterback, I’ve been playing since I was little. My dad taught me how to play but then
he left my mom and I. My dad left when I was ten. My brother DeAndre was on the way
after my dad left. I kept thinking it was my fault that he left me and that made me angry,
but that anger made me a one good football player.
Years later...
One day, I came home from football practice and I got the mail, I couldn’t believe
what I saw. It was a scholarship to the Jacksonville Jaguars football team. I read the
papers and it said that I would have to live and go to school at Jacksonville. I couldn’t
tell my mom or brother just then, I’ll tell them at dinner. I hid the letter so my mom
wouldn’t see it, and I got ready for dinner. I smelt the fresh cornbread and the barbecue
chicken that just came off the grill. We sat down at the table and I was just about to tell
them the good news. Then the doorbell rang. I went to answer the door and this guy
was standing there and he said his name was Xavier Hall. Xavier Hall said “ I am the
coach at Jacksonville high school, May I come in.”
I was extremely nice but assertive because I needed to get in this school and we
didn’t have enough money. I asked him “ Do you want me to call you Coach Hall and do
you want to stay for dinner ?” He said “ Yes DeShawn you can call me Coach or Coach
Hall and yes I’ll stay for dinner. Coach and I sat down at the table and my mom got his
plate ready. My mom knew Coach Hall and they went to high school together. They
talked a lot to catch up. I stopped them and told my family what I got in the mail today.
My mom was so happy she even started to cry. She said “ My little man all grown up is
going to be a famous football star. I want you to go and live your dream DeShawn. I
want what’s best for you.” I asked her “ what about the money and what about you and
DeAndre.” My mom cut me off and said “ We will be fine, don’t worry about us.”
I went to DeAndre, he was so happy that his big brother was going to be in the NFL
when he graduates. The one thing he said was “ Don’t forget about mom and I” I told
DeAndre I would never forget about him and mom.” I was wondering how I am going to
stay in Jacksonville. Coach had some good news, and he said “DeShawn you can stay
with my family and I in Jacksonville and you’ll be able to sleepover on the weekends.” I
was so happy that I could go to Jacksonville and see my family.
I asked Coach Hill “ When do I get to go to Jacksonville and when do I get
registered for school?” Coach Hill said “ We already have you registered for school
because I got mail that said the same thing you have. You can leave anytime on
Sunday. Ill let you spend the weekend here.” I shook Coachs hand and walked him out
and said “ I’ll see you Sunday night.” As Coach left, I told my mom and my brother when
I was leaving. I did as much as I could that weekend with them. My brother helped me
pack my stuff on Sunday. I had my last regular dinner with my family. My mom kissed
me goodbye and gave me a hug. I hugged my little brother goodbye and told him to
help mom and don’t give her any trouble. I left the house and I was on my way to the
Hill’s and to change my life.
When I got to Jacksonville it was like a totally different place. There were no bars on
the windows and no thugs on the street. Instead there were people waving at me and
smiling and I didn’t even know them. I got to the Hill’s house and their house looked like
a mansion, well in my eyes it did. I walked up to the door and I was super nervous. I
was over thinking that they weren’t going to like me. I rang the doorbell and they didn’t
answer the first time. I thought to myself what if they forgot or what if it’s the wrong
house. I rang it again and they answered she said “Hi my name is Jasmin and my
brother Jordan should be down to help with the other bags, but here let me help with
those and I’ll show you to your room. Jordan came out of his room and said hey I’ll get
your bags.
I got to my room and it was huge. I have a king size bed, a walk-in closet, my own
flat screen Tv. I wasn’t used to this at all. I was so shocked. Jordan came in and saw my
face and he said “ Yeah we cleaned it. I hope you like it.” I shook my head and I was
speechless. As Jordan left my room I started to put my clothes away and there was a
knock on my door and I turned around and it was Mrs. Hall. I straightened up and said
“Hi Mrs. Hall thank you for letting me stay here. I really appreciate this is a miracle for
me.” She said “ Your welcome you can stay as long as you need, I’ll leave you alone I
can see your busy I’ll see you tomorrow morning” Once Mrs. Hall left I finished hanging
up my clothes and then I was getting ready for bed.
The next morning I got up and ready for school. I thought to myself how am I going
to fit in at this school. It’s a bunch of spoiled rich kids and I’m a “ ghetto ” guy that has to
work hard to get something that I want. I snapped out of it and put some good thoughts
in my head and hopefully that will get me through the day. I walked down stairs and
there was everyone getting breakfast prepared, I told them they should’ve woke me up
earlier so I could help them out. Jasmin said “ this is your first time here first
impressions count for everything, and trust me you will get to help a lot. So we all eat
breakfast together and Coach, Jordans, Jasmine and I all head to school. Mrs Hall
heads to her law firm business. As I approached the school I got more and more
nervous. I kept on checking just to make sure I had everything and I did everytime. I
finally got out of the car and walked into school.
Everyone was staring at me. I felt very uncomfortable. So uncomfortable I ran into
the prettiest and smartest girl I ever did see. I helped her with the things she dropped
and we got to talk a lot. Her name is Nia and she’s a cheerleader and likes to watch
football. I saw Jordan with the football team and I told Nia we should go on a date. She
said yes! I was happy and she saw that. I told her I see you later and I’ll call you. I finally
got to meet the whole football team. They treated me like I was one of them, part of the
family. After school I went to football practice. I worked hard and stayed back an hour
longer than the other guys. I kept in mind I had a date, so I left and got ready to go pick
up Nia. She looked gorgeous. I took her home and she had fun and so did I. That was a
good first day.
Months later…
My life has definitely changed over the last couple months. I’m still living with the
Hill’s and they have been so good to me. They have been treating me like their own kid.
I have a new girlfriend, Nia. Weve been dating since the first date. I’ve been working
super hard to please my family even though I already do. I’ve been working so hard with
longer practice and lifting weights. The team and I have a championship game today.
We’ve been practicing so hard and so has Nia. My mom, my brother, and some friends
from my old school are coming to my championship game.
The game begins and so far so good. Later in the game, they are beating us by five
points and we have five minutes left. We have two plays that could make us win. I told
Jordan that we should do those two plays and we did. We made two touchdowns! The
crowd went wild. After that game I couldn’t have been happier everything was looking
up. Jasmin, Nia,Jordan and I went to a party to celebrate the championship win. The
party was in my neighborhood “the ghetto”. An hour goes by and Jasmin wants to go
home and so do I. So I told everyone I was leaving and I took Jasmin home with me.
I knew it was a bad neighborhood so I walked her to her car. Just then I didn’t know
my life was going to change so dramatically. Someone started shooting at us, so I
protected Jasmin and I got shot. That night I went to the hospital. Everyone came to the
even the whole football team. I made a very hard decision that day to keep the bullet in
and very little movement or take it out with surgery and I might be paralyzed on my
whole left side. I thought long and hard and I took the surgery. After surgery I couldn’t
move my arm. They tested it. I wanted to take it again and my arm began to move. The
doctor said “You should be fully recovered in two months and we’ll do some check-ins.
You can also do minimal stretches.” I was so happy I wasn’t paralyzed and only two
months that gives me time to practice plays for our last game of the season. Two
months later, with my dedication to get better and stronger faster, I was able to play our
last game. We won the game and I got the scholarship. My dream came true with a little
hard work and determination. You can do anything even when something bad happens.
