this can be half or little less than half a page!!!1. Gives you other examples and models of how your peers responded to a prompt.2. Reinforces whether you completed the assignment according to the prompt.3. Affirms through your peers comments or your reading of peers work which areas of the assignment you are most successful in and which might need more attention.4. Gives you the opportunity to practice the skills of working with others and providing constructive feedback.5. Clarifies your own knowledge through teaching others. Some notes and clarifications about peer review:1. It is not your job to proofread and edit your peers work. Point out repeated grammar errors if you see them and make sure to look them up to clarify your own sense of the correction before correcting a peer.2. Follow Netiquette and be kind and constructive, but dont provide empty compliments. Follow your instincts and be honest with your peers. If you think they may have misinterpreted the assignment, check the prompt, and suggest that they ask the instructor- or clarify with the instructor yourself first.3.Do not rely on your peer as you would an instructor or expect them to catch every problem with your draft. Peer review cannot replace the guidance of a trained tutor or instructor.4. Sometimes you may not get the guidance you hoped for from your peers, or you may feel you do a lot more helping than being helped. In some cases your gift in this exercise is to help others- and believe it or not, we learn and grow most when we teach others.5. Even after a great peer review session, you should review your own draft using the rubric as guidance. This is the same rubric that is used by the instructor to grade your final essay.Peer review PDF attached below!! week_13_research_essay_draft.docx Unformatted Attachment Preview Julian Silva English 104 05/24/2020 Did you know that since the mid 20th century, about 8.3 billion metric tons of plastics have been produced. Also, most of that plastic has been produced within the last 15 years. When plastics were invented, they were such an innovative, mind-blowing, life changing product. If you live by todays standards, than you probably take many things in life for granted. One of these things have a high chance of being plastic. Many useful things are made from plastics nowadays. Things such as cutlery and shopping carts. The more we as humans have become accustomed to plastics in everyday life the less we started to realize how great its affects on our environment are. In the last decades humans have created plastic straws, spoons, bags, bottles, and many more things out of plastic. Plastics such as these are normally used once which has granted them the title of “Single-Use” plastics. These specific plastics are the bane of our environment. Once people are finished using them they most of the time dispose of them by throwing them on the ground or in the ocean. This causes so much pollution that these plastics are rapidly killing animals and sometimes even humans. Plastics are a big help yet they are so detrimental to this world. We need to find ways to stop plastics before they get to big of a grip on the world. One way to lower the public health risks would be to work toward eliminating plastic from our day to day lives because if we don’t get rid of single-use plastics they will cause serious health detriments to humans and pollute the environment in an irreversible way. What are single-use plastics. Single-use plastics are plastics that are molded into an object meant for a one time use. Some very famous examples of these would be plastic straws, plastic spoons, plastics forks, plastic knives, and plastic bottles. Single-use plastics are just like any other plastic and are almost impossible to break down completely. This is because plastics are basically all artificial. An article that gives objective information on this is “Single-Use Plastics” by journalist Courtney Lindwall. She starts off by explaining when these plastics were created and when their popularity truly started to skyrocket. She then goes on to explain the cons of single-use plastics. The first is that plastics don’t break down easily at all. They apparently only break up. She informs us that “Over time, sun and heat slowly turn plastics into smaller and smaller pieces until they eventually become what are known as microplastics”(Lindsey Caldwell 2020). The second con is that we as human rely on them to much in day to day life. This not only makes cutting down on plastic hard for humans but it will be a continuous problem for quite some time until we can find an exact replacement for them. Caldwell then talks about health detriments to humans and the world via plastics. She explains to us that there are some chemicals such as endocrine in plastics that can cause health problems. Some problems include hormonal imbalances and infertility. In the next section, she says that there is an estimated 4.8 million to 12.7 million metric tons of plastic that make there way into water streams every year. In the last section, Caldwell discusses why we should get rid of single-use plastics and ways we can avoid them. She discusses banning them which she says will reduce plastic demand and pollution. It will make companies innovate to bring the costumer a new, cheap, and safer way to go about life. When single-use plastics break up they don’t decompose at all. They actually turn into what we call microplastics. Microplastics are exactly that, micro-plastics. They are plastics broken to a level that is almost invisible to the naked eye. These plastics cause some big problems for the ocean and animal/human health. The people from toxtown .gov wrote a short but informative article on the effects of microplastics. In the first part they talk about the definition of microplastics which is basically exactly what I just explained in the beginning part of this paragraph. Although, deep within this section you will find that they explain the major sources of Microplastics which include Agricultural Runoff, Aquaculture, Cruise Ships, Ocean Dumping, Stormwater, The Shipping(Fishing) Industry, Urban Runoff, and Waste Management. I believe this information is crucial to keep in mind because if people want to stop using plastics they need to remember these sources. The next part explains why microplastics are such a big concern of today. The most important part in this short section is when they explain that “There is concern that microplastics could have adverse health effects on humans as they move through the marine food web. Microplastics both absorb and give off chemicals and harmful pollutants. Plastic’s ingredients or toxic chemicals absorbed by plastics may build up over time and stay in the environment.”(ToxTown 2017). The next section is about who is risk. ToxTown list an effective list that talks about who may be at risk depending on where you work and what you may have been exposed to. The last part explains why microplastics are a concern by listing different pollutants and toxic chemicals. The list included Dioxin, Persistent Organic Pollutants, Polybrominated Diphenyls, Polychlorinated Biphenyls, Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons. The most mind-blowing fact about dioxins is that they put people at the risk of contracting cancer. You may be asking yourself that if this stuff is so dangerous then what can we do to stop it. That is a great question. One way we can stop plastics from spreading is by banning single use plastics and getting cheap replacements for them. The WWF recently posted an article in January 2019 called 10 worst single-use plastics and eco-friendly alternatives. Just like the title insinuates, this article is about replacements for single-use plastics. For most of the article they just tell you to try and use reusable cutlery and bottles and straws. For plates they say you should use organic leaf made plates and for pre-packaged meals they simply said to try and avoid them. A business insider article by Mara Leighton also gives alternatives to single-use plastics. This site recommends anything reusable, glass bottles, wood hangers, glass meal prep containers, bamboo cutting brushes, and some of the things from the other site. All of these alternatives seem to be relatively cheap (especially since most are reusable) would make a big impact on the environment for good. All in all, there are many problems that come from using single-use plastics as you have seen from these articles. Many people don’t care about what the effects of their actions cost the environment. People like that help their to be even more pollution and health issues in the world than there already. You may be one of those people or you may not. If people don’t make a change than the health of humans and the environment are at stake. I have provided the facts and all I ask is that you do what feels right. ...
