Good day Dr. Mancuso,
My name is Shannon Perry and I reside in a small town in Mississippi by the name of
Sardis. I have 3 adult sons who have blessed me with 6 beautiful grandchildren; 3 girls and
3 boys. I am blessed to marry a childhood friend of 30 years. August will mark our 4 year
anniversary.
Since I obtained my bachelors degree in 2014, I have worked with individuals facing mental
illness. I found much joy knowing that I have the opportunity to educate individuals and
their family about mental illness.
I obtain my associates degree in social work which was followed by a Bachelors degree in
social work from Rust College, From there I cocompleted my masters in Human Services
though Argosy University.
I look forward to this class and everyone sharing their experinces in this chosen field.
Your Community Context of Practice

The community in which I live has many needed services such as alcohol and drug
addiction, but mental health is something that caught my attention while obtaining my bachelor’s
degree in social work. Living in Mississippi which is one to the poorest states and holds the
number one slot for things such as obesity, unemployment, and poverty, And with
unemployment leads to lack of insurance. This led to individual who need mental health care
along with their families left in the dark. In Lafayette county there are approximately 53,796
(2016) individuals and a fourth of these individuals who are faced with mental health issues
along with alcohol and drug addiction also within my city, there is the University of Mississippi
which effects the growth of this county yearly. Individuals complete their degrees and decide to
make Mississippi their home.
The past six years I have worked in the mental health field and saw firsthand how the
lack of knowledge and insurance limits the care needed. Mental health in the African American
families is a taboo topic and shielded and the word mental health does not exist. The family
members who has this affliction will not receive the necessities needed to survive such as
medication and regular doctor visit due to shame from others in the community.
Mental illness
just as other disease does not discriminate, mental illness affects a diverse community. Since I
live near a university, I have met individual from different counties, ethnicities and cultures.
Some of these individuals I have met while shopping a Walmart are some of the same individual
I have conducted a assessment for them to receive mental health services.
As the community goes, so has the resources. In 1971 The Haven House opens it doors
with only 15 beds, which offered treatment for those facing issues with mental illness and drug
abuse. This facility offered 30 to 90 treatment. In the first year it provided services to 90
individuals. In 2001 the facility expanded and now has 48 beds that provide services for male
and female patient, due to the expansion it provides care for a least 300 people yearly
(Communicare, 2020).
Another facility that provides care to those with mental illness is Region IV Mental Health
Stabilization Center. Which began providing services in 1972. Region IV provides services to
individuals in need of mental health and alcohol and drug abuse at facilities in Alcorn, Desoto,
Prentiss, Tippah, and Tishomingo Counties in the state of Mississippi. The Stabilization Center
is a 15-bed facility that provide care for those with or without insurance. The treatment last from
3 days to 90 days (Mental, 2020). The last resource is affiliated with The Haven House, which
is Communicare a community mental health center that offers a variety of outpatient clinical
services, including:
•
•
•
•
•
Childcare Services
Prevention Services
Crisis Services
Behavioral Services
Substance Abuse Services
Each of the listed facility are affiliated with the Department of Mental Health Hospital
located in Jackson, MS. , Tupelo, MS and Meridian, MS. These facilities provide more intense
treatment than the facilities listed.
Racial tension has the most historical impact in this community. Lafayette county and
Ole Miss has been the center of racial tension since James Meredith walked on the University of
Mississippi campus.in 1962. Upon his arrival riots started which was encouraged by the
Governor at that time Ross Barnett. Due to the growing threat to James Meredith along with
other African American president Kennedy orders 31, 000National guardsman’s to provide
safety for him as well as others in the community. With the South Jim Crow laws and the
tension with the Plessy vs. Ferguson along with the Brown verdit racism was taking its peak.
The death of Medgar Evers also impacted the growing racism and the death of Emmett Till.
These are some of the historic events that effected the African American community and why to
will not educate themselves due to the impending repercussions.
The listed website provides needed information for those who know where to search,
again if individual is not education of the services offered they lack the knowledge of were to
search.
As a human service provider/leader my goal; educating those in the African American
communities along with latinos, Asians any other ethnicity located within the community. My
goal is providing information by providing workshop, seminars, and women groups. I would
meet people where they are to provide the information . I would also establish a temporary
housing center for those individuals whose family has gave up on them due to repetitive actions.
The reason behind the seminars; provide families the importance of medication regulation and
why its important to learn what mental illness consist of and how a person can receive the
treatment they deserve. As a human being.
