It can be related to your major or minor, any course you’ve taken, some certification you hold (CPR, landscaping, phlebotomy, pilot, etc), military training, family business or special interests you have. Focus on a specific process, event, person, concept, or object you can share visually – do not try to overview an entire field of study. Remember - this is an informative speech, so you do NOT have to convince your audience to change or reinforce any belief or behavior. Add your style and just “give us the facts,” and we will do what we want with the information. Your challenge is to edit and simplify your information so you can fit it into 7-8 minutes, yet still use enough strong content (Chapter 3) and sensory aids (Chapter 4) to “bring your topic alive!” NOTE: For most informative speeches, you cannot use too many presentational aids. Such aids are a strong emphasis for this speech because they create movement and gestures that enhance vocal variation and audience contact. Such delivery skills are critical to public speaking (see sample informative speech topics). Informative Speech Requirements Sources: 1) Minimum of three reliable, college-level sources (excluding “reference works”). 2) Be sure to verbally/visually cite each source as you use it. Audio/Visuals: 1) Visual of your Main Points (in Preview). 2) Minimum four or at least one to support each main point (incorporate 3 BECOT). 3) You may use computerized equipment for this presentation. See textbook for suggestions on appropriate use of PowerPoint. Delivery: Extemporaneous, visually engaging, authentic, and audience-centered. Outline: (Additional 20 points) Use the following “Speaking” outline format (template) for your assignment. Remember to use single words and/or short phrases; avoid full sentences. Your outline must be typed. Label and add all the parts of an intro/conclusion filled in with your content. Use “prompts” to indicate where you will use sensory aids (BECOT) and where you will mention (cite) each source from your research, as you use that source in the body of the talk. Also, indicate where you have used (CENTS) in your outline. Add works cited in proper MLA or APA format to the bottom of the outline. SAMPLE OUTLINE TEMPLATE (Review Textbook, Chap 5) Name: Section: Date: I. INTRODUCTION (60-90 seconds total; don’t start with a 3 minute story/video) A. Attention Step: See text pages 105-106 for some good strategies. This step is quick, 5-10 seconds. “Grab” our attention. That’s all. B. Specific Purpose: To inform what audience on what topic? (Use vis aid) C. Audience Motivation: Why should we listen to your topic? See p. 107-108. D. Speaker Credibility: Why should we listen to YOU? Tell us your research and any unique connection/experience with the topic. See p. 108. E. Preview: What are your main points? List your points on a vis aid. Try hard to use just one to three words per main point. II BODY (The number of main points and sub-points will vary greatly; your call) A. First Main Point (prompt: cite 1st source) 1. Sub-point (map/photo) “C” PROMPTS can be typed with bold 2. Sub-point (overhead slide) “N” font, or underlined, or often highlighted with colors. They can be within the text, B. Second Main Point (blackboard) or off to the left/right side. Very often, T hey are hand-written in colors. It’s your 1. Sub-point (quote expert) “T” outline, so it’s your style/technique. 2. Sub-point (prompt to move) a. sub-sub point (video) “E” b. sub-sub point (object held up) “E” C. Third Main Point (ppt slides w/statistics, showing the source) “N” 1. Sub-point (quote, cite 2nd source) “T” 2. Sub-point (handout; tell story) “S” (Note: Some people also like to plan transitions between main points.) (Sample Outline Template cont…) III. CONCLUSION (Like an upside-down introduction, minus credibility) A. Restate Specific Purpose. Use same vis aid again B. Summary: Like the preview: use same vis aid. Stronger summaries also stress a key “lesson” or two to remember. See p. 109. C. Re-motivation: Why should we remember your talk? See p. 109. D. Closure: Most ideas that work for attention steps also work well for closures. It’s the “clincher,” so the audience knows you’re done. See p. 110. (Reference “Sample Informative Outline”, Appendix G pp. 273-274 in Talk Like You Talk text) TIME CONTROL HINT: Break your speech into pieces, as if you are giving a 2-minute talk for each of three main points. Add a 90-second introduction and a 30-second conclusion, and you have your eight-minute speech. After typing your outline, skip a few lines and list your WORKS CITED. Use proper MLA or APA format. (Refer to Appendix D of this workbook) Three sources minimum required for this speech, but please do not use all online sources. Do not count yourself as one of those two sources. “Reference Works” (encyclopedias, dictionaries) can certainly be used; however, will not count as one of your three “college level” sources. Then cite sources aloud. SAMPLE TOPICS FOR INFORMATIVE SPEECHES This is NOT a demonstration speech, but one of your main points might be a “How To” step. We expect “college level” research here, so please pick a topic you sincerely want to study more. We hope that your topic will be somewhat aligned with your academic major and/or actual job interest so that you will have more natural credibility (ethos). Individual recitation instructors may add or subtract topics or categories from the following sample list. These were all actual COMX speeches. Please scan textbook pages 277-278 for MANY more topics, as well as guidelines on how to organize your main and sub-points. REMEMBER: Informative speeches do NOT get “preachy” and opinionated. They stress the facts: Who, What, Where, When, and How. If you start stressing a “Need” to do something and telling us “Why,” you are likely slipping into the persuasion area.
