The paper will be released to you in early May by the Business School administrative team. We have yet to be informed of the deadline date for submission. The paper consists of ten questions from which you will need to choose three to answer. We have settled on a total length of 3000 words (+10\% if you want to use it and excluding references) to reflect the fact that this piece of work will constitute 50\% of your total mark. There is no requirement to write 1000 words in answer to each of the three questions you choose, but it makes sense if you wish to maximise your marks to give broadly equal space to each of them. The University is taking a fairly strict approach to these replacement ‘exams’. Tutors are obliged to ensure that the same approach is taken in terms of guidance and advice as would be the case were it to been actual unseen examination. This means that Graham and I, as well as our seminar leaders, will not be able to read drafts or plans, nor we will we be able to provide individual students with any assistance that we do not also provide to the whole cohort. We can clarify points and answer questions about our lectures and the seminar content, but will not be able to give you extensive one-to-one support as you write your exam-replacement assignments. General advice The main points we would make by way of advice to you as you prepare to tackle this assignment is the same as would be the case were it a traditional exam: i) Please do your best to address the questions we have asked directly and fully. Avoid writing what you know about a subject or answering a different question that you would personally prefer to answer. We can only award high marks to assignments which address the actual question on the paper. Where a question has two parts, please take care to give each part sufficient (not necessarily equal) attention. Do justice to all parts. ii) Please do your best to write answers which develop and justify original arguments and do not simply summarise your reading. Remember, we want to know what your view is about the issues raised in the questions and why you have reached that conclusion. The more thoughtful and considered your response, the higher your mark will be. Justify your assertions as persuasively and authoritatively as you can. iii) When marking your exam-replacement assignments we are going to be looking for evidence that you have studied the subject. So please include references, citing as appropriate in your written text. Where you can, please include reference to refereed academic journal articles so that you are justifying points with robust and authoritative research findings. Please feel free to use other references too – journalistic and web-based sources - but a good balance is necessary to score the higher level marks. iv) As this is a typed-up assignment rather than a handwritten exam, we will expect a professional level of presentation. So please pay attention to grammar, spelling and your standard of expression. We do not expect perfection, particularly as so many of you will not be writing in your first language, but arguments do carry more authority if expressed well. So please do not neglect presentation. Specific advice In order to assist you in preparing to tackle this assignment and to use the time between now and the release of the brief profitably, we are providing for you here an indication of the broad areas that each of the ten questions concerns. This is the same kind of guidance that we would have provided had this been a traditional time-limited examination. Please have a look at past papers on the BEM1016 ELE pages to get an idea of the style of questions that we will be asking you. Q1) Machine and garden styles of management Q2) Theories of motivation in the workplace Q3) The causes of globalisation Q4) Expatriate assignments Q5) Technology and the future of work Q6) Individual managers and business ethics Q7) Leadership and creativity Q8) Future skills shortages Q9) Population ageing and other social and demographic changes Q10) Structural agility and flexibility in organisations. BEM1016 UNIVERSITY OF EXETER BUSINESS SCHOOL May 2020 THEORY & PRACTICE OF MANAGEMENT Module Convenor: Stephen Taylor Due Date: Monday 18 May 2020 Answer THREE questions. Maximum word count is 3000 words (+ 10\%) excluding references All questions are worth equal marks. 1) In recent years, after decades of steady growth, the level of productivity in many economies (including the UK’s) has stagnated. Some argue that this is in part due to the evolution of an approach to management which is softer and more focused on the needs and desires of employees than the efficiency of organisations. There is thus a need to return to a machine-style approach to management. To what extent do you agree with this view and why? 2) To what extent do you agree that motivation theories can be helpful for managers looking to improve the performance of their organisations? Justify your answer. 3) Can we argue that there has been any one factor alone that has contributed to the contemporary rise in globalisation? Justify your answer. 4) Organisations utilise expatriate managers for a number of different reasons. Critically discuss how organisations can ensure the success of expatriate assignments. 5) How far do you agree with the view that technological developments will transform the nature of the jobs that we do and the way that employment is structured over the next twenty-five years? Illustrate your answer with examples. 6) What can individual managers do to improve business ethics in commercial organisations which operate in highly competitive environments? Why is it often difficult to make such improvements in practice? 7) To what extent do you agree with the view that leaders have a strong influence over the creative output of their teams or organisations? 8) You are asked to make a presentation to senior managers in an organisation you work for about possible future skills shortages. Your audience is particularly interested in the longerterm outlook, the causes of likely changes and suggestions as to appropriate, potential corporate responses. What principal points would you make and why? 9) Citing examples to support your arguments, to what extent must our organisations be responsive to social and demographic changes such as population ageing? 10) Our organisations are faced with increasingly unpredictable and volatile environments. Why, therefore, do hierarchies persist when various scholars claim our firms require more agile and flexible structures? ... Purchase answer to see full attachment
