Non-traditional Education
Claim
Students who have gone through non-traditional educational systems possess the
necessary experiences that have made them push harder in their careers and become more
successful than their counterparts who have gone through the traditional education system.
Position of the Claim
The above claim takes a position in that it supports the idea of non-traditional students
being better. The position is based on the idea that non-traditional students have introduced new
skill-sets in the job market as most of the people involved have underlying factors that push them
to become better. The claim looks to answer the question of whether or not non-traditional
students are better off compared to traditional students. The capacity to deliver on a personal
level is the focus of the claim to outline its position in the issue. The claim also ascertains that
non-traditional students are equally, if not more productive than their traditional colleagues. The
only thing that sets them apart is the fact that non-traditional students have underlying situations
that push them to become better when compared to traditional students who have less compelling
them to become better and perform.
NON-TRADITIONAL EDUCATION
2
Claim Argument and Evidence Support
The claim can be argued and supported by evidence in several ways. For instance, a
person can look into the national data about the employment status of students who have gone
through the non-traditional educational system. The numbers available show that there has been
an influx in the numbers in the employment sector which is higher than that of traditional
students. Again, the number of non-traditional students who are in colleges and higher education
institutions is higher than that of traditional students. In that case, the data can be used as an
indication of how there is demand in the skill-sets of non-traditional students in the job industry
based on their desire to make their lives better which improves their general performance.
Taking a look at the performance of individual companies who have absorbed non-traditional
students in them is another way to argue and support the claim.
Specifics of the Claim
The claim is specific in that it focuses on the performance of non-traditional students in
the job sector. The claim focuses on the reasons why non-traditional students choose to become
better in their places of work which can be traced back and connected to their performance in
school. Again, the claim indirectly draws a comparison between non-traditional and traditional
students. It looks to identify the traits in non-traditional students that make them unique in their
delivery and performance.
What does an Introduction do?
What does an Introduction do?
An introduction is the first part of your essay and is mostly written for your reader. It’s the paragraph
where you tell the reader what they need to know to follow the rest of the essay. This is where you
bring them into the story or conversation you are having in the essay. You let them know what the essay
is about, what claim or argument you are going to support, and how you plan to support the claim.
Below are some things your introduction should have as you start to plan out your essay.
1. An introduction brings the reader into the conversation or story you’re telling, so it’s
important for your essay to have a topic sentence that tells the reader what the essay is about.
You might do this by naming a topic, by asking a question that you’ll answer with your claim, or
by offering a short example that relates to your claim.
2. An introduction makes use of a claim. Now that you’ve written and revised your claim,
incorporate it into the introduction. You might need to make some changes so that it flows. If
you’re not sure about how well it is incorporated, ask a friend or classmate to read it out loud to
you so you can hear how it flows.
3. An introduction should tell the reader a little about how you’ll support your claim. If you plan
to support your claim with personal experiences, then tell the reader that so they know what to
expect. If you plan to use evidence from academic or scientific sources, it’s important for the
reader to know that so that they’re prepared to follow along. This is called “sign posting.”
4. An introduction might name some topics or ideas that will be explored in the essay or other
context. This is not required but if you have a particular topic that is important for the reader to
know they need to be aware of, it’s a good idea to mention it here. This might include important
terms, context that is important to understanding the perspective of the essay, or even just an
idea that your reader should keep in mind.
Below is an example of introductions from a student’s final essay. Youll find more examples in the
Learning Narrative Examples page.
Learning Narrative
I am a person that learns from my own mistakes and by observing to make a better plan. I also
enjoy when someone takes the time to stop and explain what I have made a mistake on. For example
when I make a mistake when I am driving my grandpa would make me stop and sit in the passenger seat
and watch what would be a right way to fix my mistake. I learn by watching and thinking back what I
have done wrong and repeating until I master my mistake. In this essay I will be explaining my story
about how I can relate on how I learn and my experiences. I will be sharing my story about my deafness
and how I overcome my obstacles.

Whitney Johnsons article on alternative education aims at promoting H.R. practices that

those how received their training in unique university or college settings. Throughout the
paper, Johnson is unambiguous in her advocacy for competency rather than curriculum.
According to her, flashy degrees from reputable universities are not everything, and
people can still meet workplace standards with unconventional learning paths. She
applauds Western Governors University for its involvement in preparing adult students
for the workforce in more practical ways.
According to Whitney Johnson, there are no grades in a workplace environment; an

The article, Nontraditional students impact U.S. Economy, Society and Schools,
provides a thorough examination of the impact that this group of individuals have on
society in general. According to the authors, these valuable populations fill worker
shortages and stabilize the local economy due to the increased financial stability among
residents. These alternative options provide school dropouts with a second chance at life
and ensure people can advance their training and get promotions. Overall, by completing
the education they need, nontraditional students impact their social and civic
environments.
The authors also offer critical points that are worth considering. First is that in the future,
nontraditional students will inform the composition of the higher education population.
Secondly, a well-educated population means that more people will be financially stable,
thereby strengthening the tax base. The article also mentions the noticeable advantages of

This article is a valuable source, especially in determining the impact of nontraditional

well-researched evidence that shows how beneficial nontraditional education is to

Billy Wong, in his article, By Chance or by Plan, explores the academic success of an
often-neglected population of high-achieving nontraditional students. The paper aims to
study the factors that bolster the chances of success among these students in the hopes
that these conditions can be replicated and amplified for other students. Most of the
students in this group are often underprivileged. However, according to Wong, that does
not mean that other people cannot pursue this alternative learning method to complete
their education.
Wongs paper highlights that first-generation university students, students from lowincome households, students from minority ethnic/racial backgrounds, mature students,
or students with a declared disability often make up the population of nontraditional
students. The study revealed that family support, the desire to prove oneself and to make
strides in life are often the contributing factors to success among nontraditional learners.
