This paper is going to focus on the problem of increased homelessness situation in America. Individuals in America, with the support of the government, need to implement actions to solve the problem of homelessness affecting the nation (Gerrard, Jessica, et al. 2221). Homelessness is a problem itself that results in many other issues in life; therefore, it is an issue to be addressed with immediate effect. This paper will also outline the major problems that lead to high rates of homelessness in America. The effects of homelessness on individuals and the nation in general, together with the problems faced while trying to solve the problem of homelessness, will be addressed in the essay. So the paper will progress from the main challenge to be addressed and then proceed to the reasons for homelessness in America. Other sections will discuss the effects of homelessness, problems faced while addressing the issue, and eventually provide policies. The essay will, in the end, give recommendations to solve the problem of increased homelessness in America. THESIS: Homelessness in America has recently increased due to the impact of drug abuse and increased unemployment levels that raise concern for finding solutions. Saroyan Problem Description The United States of America has faced the problem of homelessness from way back in the ancient ages, so it is of critical importance that the issue is dealt with. Dating back in the colonial periods, the weak laws of Elizabeth, the queen, decided who was to stay in the nation and who was to vanish, thereby resulting in homelessness. The first recorded case of homelessness was in the years sixteen forties when the European colonialists were evacuating Americans from their native homes (Gerrard, Jessica, et al. 2226). Also, as the American cities were developing during the industrial revolution period, there was an increased number of poverty levels often caused by mass migration into the cities. Reasons for Homelessness in America A research done by Victor, Tailor, and Lelinneth indicated that drug abuse might have a significant effect in preventing someone from obtaining and retaining a place of residence. The study was conducted and analyzed the locally available treatment admission records that outlined the patient who needed housing assistance (Van Ry, Meredith Jean 143). Results indicated that out of one admission or discharge of drug abuse victims, one hundred and eighty-five individuals did not have homes and so lived in the streets. Many individuals in the United States of America are reported to be addicts in drug abuse, therefore, resulting in an inability to afford the daily basic needs (Van Ry, Meredith Jean 144). If someone cannot afford the necessities in life, it means that they end up living in the streets. Apart from drug abuse, the loss of jobs is one of the significant contributions to the increased homelessness in America. Many people, especially black Americans, are jobless, which means they lack any source of income to afford daily needs. Unemployment results in high poverty levels in America, which, as a result, has forced many people to live in the streets Saroyan just to afford life (Van Ry, Meredith Jean 154). Furthermore, sustaining families without any source of income is difficult because there are a lot of obligations, including rent payment and school fees required for the children. Many parents eventually just abandon their families to live in the streets because of stress, while others move out to the streets together with their families. Effects of Homelessness in America Homelessness results in many health problems due to the unsafe environment in the streets. Furthermore, homeless people have problems accessing medical services in case they are sick. The feeling of losing a home and having the streets as the only option of a home is so traumatic and depressive. As a result, many homeless individuals end up abusing drugs to forget about their problems and, in the end, become drug addicts. Homeless individuals are vulnerable to conducting illnesses and diseases such as tuberculosis, asthma, hypertension, and sexually transmitted infections like HIV/AIDs (Van Ry Meredith Jean 167). Upon getting sick, many homeless people often die because of getting sick and not getting medical treatment and proper attention. Barriers to Solving the Problem of Homelessness Homeless people lack strong advocates to champion their rights. Those people living in the streets with nowhere to go are often considered the minority in the society, and so no one is willing to hear their views concerning the need for help. The government alone cannot be able to end the problem of homelessness, but with support from the general community, it will be possible (Vickery, Jamie 12). There are huge costs involved in forming the best strategies to address the issue of homelessness, and the well-off members of the society in the U.S are not all willing to offer a hand-in help in eradicating homelessness. As a result, it a great challenge for Saroyan the government to end the increased homelessness condition in America; hence the cycle continues. Possible Policy Solutions to Homelessness Issue in America. Several policy solutions can be applied by the government of America to end the problem of homelessness. The government of America should set a minimum wage for the citizens of America. A living wage is the minimum amount of money required by an individual to afford the daily basic needs (Wright, Talmadge 36). The American government should also consider constructing temporary houses for homeless people while they await relocation to permanent dwellings. The shelters will help clear off people from the streets and at least give them hope to live a healthy life like others. Conclusion and Recommendation Homelessness in America is an issue that has raised concern to the government of the states and the globe as a whole. Homeless assistance programs and different associations are working in networks around the nation to give cover, discover permanent homes, and link homeless individuals to the services they require to regain stability in life. Many individuals in the United States of America are reported to be addicts in drug abuse, therefore, resulting in the inability to afford the daily basic needs. There are many costs associated with social funding programs which come from taxpayers and the general community while trying to end the homelessness problem. Policy interventions should major in addressing trauma cases by homeless individuals. One advice for American citizens is that everyone should be willing to help homeless individuals and also participate actively in ending the issue of homelessness in America.
