The goal of this project is to use some of the statistical methods and concepts we have discussed in class to investigate a topic of your choosing. Remember, this project is in place of the final exam and incorporates your original semester project as well, it is very important that you do a sufficient job as it counts for 25\% of your final course grade. You must dedicate enough time to your sampling methods, your analysis, and the write-up of your findings, to ensure you are successful on this assignment. Only college level work will earn full credit. This means your project must be clear and organized. It should be evident that you spent sufficient time on it, and did not just throw it together in the last minute. It should show your understanding of the statistical methods presented in the course.You will be investigating an original question and claim that will require you to collect and analyze data; ultimately performing a confidence interval and hypothesis test. Part 1: Your first task is to think of a topic you would like to investigate. There is literally no end to what you can explore, however, give consideration as to what the data collection process will look like (part 2). It is important to make this a doable task. If you cannot collect good-random data, then you should choose a different topic. Here are some examples of what you can explore:  Is there a difference among men and women and their wanting to have kids?  Is the average number of units attempted by other students your age at SAC less than what you are taking?  Do more than half of the students at SAC receive financial aid?  Is the average number of chocolate chips in your favorite type of chocolate chip cookie greater than 15?  Are people more likely to run red lights in the morning than in the evening?  When eating a meal, do people usually eat more than the recommended serving size?  When you purchase an item with cash, is the change you get back likely to be more than $0.50?  ..... As you can imagine, the list is endless. Come up with an idea that sounds good to you (it does not have to be off the list above... in fact I’d like to see what’s on your mind). MOST IMPORTANT, do not overcomplicate things. Do not choose something that is too hard to collect data on, as it will compromise your results. Part 2: Now that you know what you are going to investigate, you need to think about data collection. Refer back to chapter 1 as needed to revisit sampling techniques. The data can be collected by you personally, or can come from a source found on the internet or from a book. If you use someone else’s collected data, you must site where the data came from as well as what methods were used to create the sample (if possible). If you are unable to site where the data comes from, then you should not use it. Keep in mind, it is important that you are taking sufficient sample sizes (means need 𝑛 ≥ 30 and proportions need the number of success and fails to each be ≥ 10), and most importantly the data must be random. If you are falling short of the sample size you need, you will have to justify why the results of your interval and test would likely still be valid (only if it would be). Be sure to use sound data collection techniques (revisit chapter 1) to ensure you get a true random sample (this may influence your decision on part 1). Be very certain that you are testing the right group of people or things to support your interval and claim, or alter the question as needed. For example, if you are wanting to know the mean age of students at SAC, you cannot just sample daytime students, or Monday Wednesday students only…. That would only be good for investigating the mean age of daytime Monday Wednesday students. Part 3: Now that you are equipped with your data, you will be constructing a confidence interval to estimate the true proportion or mean you are exploring. Then you will perform a hypothesis test to investigate your original claim. Your confidence interval and hypothesis test must be written up correctly and completely, covering the necessary 5 steps we laid out in class. Depending on what you are exploring, you may need to use 1-group inference methods (Ch 8, 9) or 2-group inference methods (Ch 10). The Write Up: I would recommend typing your completed project, though it is not required. Projects must be submitted through Canvas in a pdf-formatted document. When grading your project I will look for the following elements. From Part 1 (15 points):    Clear statement of what you are exploring. Background information on how or why you decided on this topic. What factors went into your decision? From Part 2 (20 points):     Clear and detailed description of your sampling methods. If there are any flaws with your sampling method they should be pointed out and discussed. Discussion of challenges with your sampling (if any). Clearly state the results of your sampling (you don’t have to list all the data, you can describe it …. SoCS or five number summary) From Part 3 (65 points):   Clearly and thoroughly write out all 5 steps for the confidence interval you create and the hypothesis test you perform. Be sure to declare your confidence level or significance level in step 1. Present your findings or conclusion in a thorough and detailed manner. I would expect that your write-up would fill a page or more. Provide any tables, diagrams or graphs, that you think would help make your point, if applicable. If you type your project, you can have a separate page where you hand write your math (if needed), or include it in the main body of the project. Feel free to use statcrunch for all your work. The project is due the last class meeting of finals week, though I recommend you turn it in sooner in case there are challenges submitting it. *Late projects will not be accepted. ...
