1. Discuss whether or not Bundy was a psychopath.
2. Be sure to include evidence from your research (and chapter 5) in support of

Ted Bundy’s crimes patterns of raping, kidnapping and decapitating, and sadistic
behaviors towards women, also consider a necrophiliac (having sex with death
people), impersonating as staging to posing under many other names to attract
victims and escape police attention, along many states, around seven of them, can
define him as a psychopath.
As someone describe as the perfect child, or person, and considered a charmer.
His tentative that he could have be considered a murder since the age of 14,
according to some research. He could well be described under Traits theory on
biological traits of biochemical and neurological traits, and psychodynamic, since he
describes himself by being posses and attracted to committing the crimes. (Siegel,
2017, pg. 136, 137, 138, 139). Under this case you could not determine any
possibility of deterrence, and rational crime theory is obsolete. As a serious
pathology of negative compulsive, and impulsive behavior of control over the victims,
and his basic essential needs to attack as a circle of violence for gratification; the
same with conduct disorder, mood disorder for cognitive theory on focus of the
mental process susceptible, and propense to criminal activity in his case murders,
under certain patterns of choice, which his main targets become women, and
behaviors as he proceeded. (Siegel, 2017,pg 136, 140,143,149, 154).
His correlation of moving around, under different names, escaping police custody
once, then trying to escape while in prison, representing himself on his first trial,
marrying while in jail, and holding a degree on phycology from the University of
Washington as an honor student in 1977.
Ted Bundy could be considering a situational psychopath, because of his coldheartness, and lack of contrition, since the article mention that not all sociopaths and
psychopaths are considered mass murders, this type of trait theory can be well
applied, since there is no reason of choice between right or wrong, and he follows a
pattern for specific crimes. His crimes towards women between 1974, and 1978,
adding the ones he confessed before he was executed in 1989.

Susy,
Thanks for beginning this weeks discussion.
Based on the information you presented there is no evidence to support
biochemical, neurological, or psychodynamic theory. You presented support for
psychopathic personality. While Bundy was charming, he did not have the capacity
to empathize with others. His childhood was difficult and he began crime at an early
age.

Hi Susy
I would say Ted Bundy was leaning more towards Cognitive Theory because the
theory provides general reaction and focus on the changes of how the person
behaves , my feel or think. We can see that theory through his childhood trauma ,
being bullied at school because he was different from his classmates, And being
abused by his grand father.

Hello Susy,
Great posting and I agree with you pointing out that he might possibly have been a
situational psychopath. He showed no remorse in his crimes and displayed no guilt
after so many killings. He did not just kill one or two, he killed over 30 women. This is
the work of a real life psychopath who used his cunning ways to lure and baffle
authorities.

Hello class,
Research: In reading about Bundys life growing up, I learned that he was a shy
child, that felt he was not given enough attention as opposed to his younger step
siblings. He thought his mother was his sister, so the attachment theory (Siegel, pg.
145) could undoubtedly apply to Bundy as a proper attachment to a mother figure
was lacking. Bundy also had an unusual interest in porn as a young adult. He was a
peeping tom as he grew up and started shoplifting as a teen. He went through a
break up as an adult that tore him apart and sent him spiraling downward. Bundy
began committing more and more illegal acts, and his life choices continued to leave
him lonely. It seems that he was rejected continuously and alone, which caused him
to be antisocial. His family was very religious, so his criminal acts required that he
push any guilt to the side, which exacerbated this ability to feel no remorse or pity for
what he did. At the age of 20, his psychopathic tendencies were beginning to show,
and a year later, he raped and killed two women thus starting his descent.
Looking at Bundys background and life history, I believe that he was indeed a
psychopath (1). His peeping tom episodes could be related to thrill-seeking,
resulting in repeated and dangerous risky behaviors (Siegel, pg. 152). Bundys id,
ego, and superego were unchecked as he had no moral compass (Siegel, pg. 145). I
dont believe he had any underlying mental illness such as bipolar or schizophrenia
(Siegel, pg. 155) that would have contributed to his criminal acts.
I found an article discussing the research of Psychologist al Carlisle, who wrote the
book Violent Mind: The 1976 Psychological Assessment of Ted Bundy. One of the
first questions asked of him was if he believes the attachment disorder or his
addiction to porn caused him to become a psychopath. Dr. Carlisles response was
on point to what Im thinking, If early in life a person is lonely and doesnt fit in and is
empty, they begin to look for some way to undo that, to satisfy their loneliness. And
they turn to fantasy to comfort themselves. This is what happened with Bundy
(Dimitropoulos, 2018). Another question was surrounding dysfunctional families and
the fact that many people are lonely and watch porn but dont turn into psychopaths.
Dr. Carlisle responded that Bundy intended to get as close to controlling a woman
as possible and perhaps rape her because it was the next step in what was getting
to be exciting (Dimitropoulous, 2018). Ultimately Carlisle says that Bundy created
himself through his own decision making. I think I have to agree.

Hi Patty,
I would say that Ted Bundy actually was raised by his grandmother and they would
always tell him that his biological mother was his sister. So he grew up believing
that. Also Ted Bundy would say he is a porn addict and most of the time someone
who is a Psychopath would talk about addictive order so they can ease their anxiety
and feel some sort of High when they do. I do not think he knew he was crazy
because he actually felt very offended that they would think of him that way.

Patty,
You did some extensive research and illustrated how psychodynamic theory could
apply to Bundys case. You also mentioned some other diagnostic possibilities.
Bundys detached personality, family issues, and early criminal involvement also
suggest that he could have been a psychopath.

Research the crimes of Ted Bundy
Ted Bundy real name was Theodore Robert Bundy was an American serial killer
who raped, kidnapped, murdered more than 30 women from 1974 to 1978. Ted
Bundy would sexually assault his victims, then he would kill them through blunt-force
head trauma or by strangling them. The Neurological theory best fits the crimes
because according to chapter 5 in the E-text that was found on page 144: The
criminals and delinquents often suffers brain impairment; minimal brain dysfunction
is all related to antisocial disorder. The way that Ted Bundy would torture his victims
that were women had to do with the betrayal of someone he once loved but ended
up leaving him. So, hurting women was his only way of getting his revenge, along
with him speech problems.
Discuss whether or not Ted Bundy was a Psychopath?
A Psychopath is someone who suffers / suffered from a chronic mental disorder
with abnormal or violent social behavior.
Ted Bundy was really smart, but yes, he was a Psychopath because he had multiple
mental illness which were Antisocial Personality Disorder, Mood disorder, Addictive
Disorder, showed signs of Narcissism. Ted Bundy was a porn addict. Who also had
a bad childhood where his family lied to him about his biological mom being his
“sister” and his grandfather was abusive towards him and his family? Ted Bundy had
a speech problem that caused kids to bully him in school. Growing up Ted Bundy
would often find relief in scaring people and going up to the woods to build his own
tiger traps. After he would murder his victims he would actually go back and have
sex with them. All of these can be signs of someone who is psychotic or leading
them to that direction. But I also believed that Ted Bundy really became a
Psychopath after his fiancé Diane Edwards left him unexpectedly because she was
the first women that Ted Bundy had ever been Intimate with and who actually kept
Ted Bundy on the right path when they were together. So, after she had called off
the engagement and left, that is when he turned into the person that we all know him
as ( The most cold-hearted man to ever live) A man who has a cool and
unemotional demeanor used to destroy women’s life by kidnapping, raping, beating,
and killing them. Cognitive theory best fits to why Ted Bundy was a Psychopath
because according to chapter 5 in the E-text that was found on page 150 - Individual
reasoning processes influence behavior and the way they perceive their
environment. The environment has a great deal in the cognitive function of how a
person develop as they grow. We see that through the bad childhood trauma Ted
Bundy had. Him getting bullied at school and being abused at home by grandfather.

Hey Amariyah
I said the same thing he was too smart to be a psycopath and he didnt have those
qualities that made him neither. I have another outlook when it comes to the reason
that he hurt those women he basically did it because he was envious for the things
he didnt have, hurting them made him feel powerful because now they would not
have it either. He focus more on his first love because she left him and still had what
he didnt.

Hello Amariyah,
I also read that his first finance was the type of person he strived to be in the sense
of smart, classy, wealthy. I think this was also one of the reasons why she was able
to keep him on the right path. It is said that his victims resembled her. This
relationship with her clearly damaged him even more than he already was.

Hey everyone
I would have to say i dont believe that Ted Bundy was a psychopath he was too
smart for that i can say he was obsessed and hurt with his first love. Bundy became
very envious of those who had the wealth the money all the things he should have
had. He used his first love to prove that because she had everything that he didnt
that because she broke up with him just made him more angry than usual. I can say
the Bundy had a conduct disorder even though he wasent bully to his face he maybe
portrait his first girlfriend as doing so. He started a pattern that focus on those who
looked like his girlfriend same MO for each and everyone of them. He knew that the
techniques he used to lured those girls in would work so he was very smart in
coming with that plan. He was not a psychopath, remember a psychopath involves
someone having a mental disorder, or even a social behavior both of which he did
not have.

Rafael,
Psychopath/sociopath/antisocial are terms used interchangeably. Psychopaths
usually offend at an early age (e.g. set the cat on fire). They do not feel any remorse
for their actions and can be viewed as cold and calculating. Most psychopaths have
a difficult childhood that includes abuse. Many psychopaths may also be highly
intelligent. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6527586/ (Links to an

Bundy, as you stated, could have had a conduct disorder as a child.

Hello Rafael,
I respectfully disagree. I think you are thinking of sociopath. A psychopath is smart.
Their moves are calculated and not based on emotion or impulse. They take time in
their crimes making sure they get the outcome they are looking for. Ted Bundy used
to prey on the emotional vulnerability of females and ask for help while he pretended
to be hurt then he would attack when he got the perfect opportunity. He knew
exactly what he was doing.

Hi Rafael,
Im not sure I agree with your assessment of Bundy. Its common for psychopaths to
be intelligent. I believe the end of his relationship created yet another lonely
environment that sent him spiraling downhill. I can see how he was classified as a
narcissist, which is likely caused by both the environment he grew up in and his
genetics. He had no empathy, and was a master manipulator.
In one of the articles I read, a friend of his said Bundy was charming and even the
kind of person youd want your sister to marry (Puder, 2019). I cant imagine a
person who can be so congenial around others when they have so many horrible
secrets.

According to Dr John M Grohol “psychopaths have a hard time forming real
emotional attachments with others. Instead, they form artificial, shallow relationships
designed to be manipulated in a way that most benefits the psychopath.” Ted Bundy
clearly displays these character traits. During his trial Bundy was often televised
before trial. He used this as an advantage to help him with his trial. He portrayed
himself to be charming which showed him to be manipulative.
The difference between a sociopath and a psychopath is that one is biological,
and one is environmental. After reading some of the cases it seems that Bundy was
run by his id, the more primitive part of his brain, an unconscious biological drive. His
victims were raped before he killed them. Some evidence suggest that he was
sexual with some of his victim’s postmortem as well. The arousal theory tells us that
his need for high levels of environmental stimulation is what caused him to be
aggressive to feel sexually pleased/satisfied. He was charged with 36 killings, but it
is believed there was over 100. Most of his victims seem to have something in
common, the women were young. He clearly had a type.
