Introduction
The subject of our case study for our semester project was (Name). Eight years old,
(Name) was born on June 1, 2009 and raised in Los Angeles along with his younger sister
(Name). His mother and Father; (Name) and (Name) both Persian-Armenian migrated from Iran
in 1990 to Burbank California to begin their family together. The reason why we had chosen
(Name) was because we had observed that this individual child had so much personality and
(Name), the older cousin of (Name), had seen him grow and mature throughout his entire
childhood.
(Name – mother) gave birth to (Name) in Saint Joseph Hospital located in Burbank
California. (Name – mother)) mentioned that (Name) was her first pregnancy after followed by
her second child, (Name). She stated, “I was very nervous because everything was so new to me
and I was scared so I would always call my mom everyday asking her questions.” Her pregnancy
was quite difficult, she included that she had plenty of morning sickness and certain foods would
not taste the same to her. During delivery, like her journey of pregnancy, there was some
complications. This delivery involved the nuchal cord, which occurs when the infants umbilical
cord wraps around the neck 360 degrees. With doctor’s guidance this issue was resolved and the
rest of the delivery and postpartum went smoothly. (Name) has one younger sister, and they have
a very good relationship together, no jealous rivalry or constant fighting that we had observed
overall. From his mother’s side, (Name) has a few older cousins, but most are around his same
age group, his father’s side is rather quite small but does have a few older cousins as well.
(Name) is influenced most by his mother and aunt (mother’s sister) since he had spent most of
his child growing up with them, he mentioned he enjoys going to Macys and shopping with
them.
Physical Development
(Name’s) first major appearance that is noticed by many is his height, he is rather tall
for his age group, he is 4”11. He is also slim, along with straight dirty blonde hair, warm brown
eyes and a very welcoming smile. (Name’s) indication of his general health is well and on the
normal side of the spectrum, although he may have a good appetite, he is also very active as
well with fast rapid body movements. (Name) being a very expressive child, always wears his
heart on his sleeve whether it is positive or negative emotions. Any sensibility, excitement, or
even agitation will firmly be addressed by his facial expressions, he demonstrates his emotions
verbally and physically.
Along with (Name’s) overall appearance comes along his physical development
throughout his childhood. Since (Name) has been very active throughout his childhood,
involved in many different physical activities including; gymnastics tennis and swim. All of
these sports have benefited (Name) over time to help gain strong and large muscle development.
Speaking with (Name), he mentioned to us that some of his healthful routines of rest and activity
include, “I like to nap sometimes with my grandma after school and then when I get up, I have
more energy to play with my sister and finish my homework.” Another source of energy a child
benefits from consists of their diet and nutrition. As mentioned earlier, (Name) does have a very
good appetite when it comes to food, although he is very picky, if he enjoys a certain entree he
will consume big portions. Another physical development aspect for child development is the
basics of toilet independency. (Name) unlike most children, became toilet independent at a very
young age approximately 13 months and his mother mentioned there was no complications. As
mentioned in an online article from “Baby Center” about toilet dependency expectations, “No
magic age signals the ideal time to start the process of toilet training. Some children develop the
necessary physical and cognitive skills as early as 18 to 24 months, and others arent ready until
theyre 3 or 4. (Boys are often ready slightly later than girls.) Similarly, some children get the
knack in just a few short days, while it can take others a year or more.” Along with the topic of
independence and care, (Name) takes very good care of his belongings and takes his items and
toys to consideration, he still has his childhood toys in great shape. He also mentioned he
enjoys dressing himself and also choosing outfits for his younger sister, when she allows him.
However, (Name’s) mother mentioned he does not always put his clothes in the laundry basket
and does have to remind him several times.
Psychosocial Development
Following into the emotional development domain, when it involves being separated
from his parents, his reaction was moderate. After discussing about (Name’s) earlier childhood
with (Name) and also observing (Name), she got up and went to her backhouse to gather a few
items and was gone for about 10 minutes. (Name) had minor concerns, but still was confident in
his actions because when his mother came back, he went back to engaging in his activities. As it
is mentioned on, “Changes in Attachment from Infanthood to Middle Childhood,” written by
Sheila Hayes, it is stated as “effective parenting includes being a sensitive listener, granting
autonomy for exploration as well as monitoring friends and the child’s activities.” This proves
that his parents focused on (Name’s) independence, he is not dependent on their attention and is
not entirely attached to them, he can continue exploring whether his parents are gone or present.
(Name) and his father have a wonderful relationship, despite the fact that (Name’s – father)
father passed away at a young age when he was ten years old, (Name - father) did not let that
interfere with his relationship with his eight-year-old son. (Name – father) is very cautious and
ensures to his children that they will always have his support. Occasionally, (Name) may
become angry rather than
communicating and stating his issues, he acts upon them. When his sister (Name) took his toy,
he said, “(Name) what the heck, you’re so mean give it back right now or else I will scream!
That is my favorite toy I never said you can have it.” (Name) was upset and in shock so she
handed it back to him. We observed how frustrated he became, there was no need for him
overact. After this incident had occurred, (Name – father) explained to (Name) that before he
overacts, he should express how he feels, and if that does not work then he should tell his mom
or him. One great way to do it is by being able to “label his feelings,” as it says on the “10 Ways
to Teach Children Impulse Control,” by Amy Morin, parents should “Teach your child to
recognize her feelings so she can tell you, rather than show you, how she feels” and we strongly
agree with that statement.
Children including (Name), who are in the middle childhood age group, are growing rapidly, it
is necessary they learn these quick steps in order to benefit their future and not learn these
behaviors from early on. After (Name) realized (Name – sister) became upset because of the
way he had communicated with her, he immediately went and hugged her and said, “Sorry
(Name – sister), it is just my favorite toy but I know better now.” (Name – sister) sniffled a little
so (Name) ran and got a napkin and gave it to her, when she cleaned herself up she hugged him
and he squeezed her back.
Observing (Name’s) emotional development, we believed that he would not be capable
of sharing his belongings because of the incident that had happened with his sister.
However, but when we continued with our observation, we noticed that is not the case. (Name –
sister) wanted to borrow his superman cape and he gave it to her with no hesitation. Children do
periodically become protective over their objects and their belongings, but which children do
not? All families have different styles of obedience and raising children. When we all had
entered the house, he told us his friend was going to come over in a couple of minutes. When his
friend arrived, he did not take his shoes off and (Name) said, “Take off your shoes or else my
mom will get mad she just cleaned the floors plus it is not nice.” His friend (Name) looked very
confused as he removed his shoes by the front door. From this observation, we could distinguish
that (Name – friend) and (Name) had different views on “respect” in certain cultures, including
the middle east, removing your shoes when entering a home is seen to be a sign of respect. When
(Name) noticed (Name – friend) was confused, he asked, “You guys don’t do this?” This gave
(Name) some aspects to think about how different families may have different views. When he
was interacting with (Name – friend), they both had a lot of fun and enjoyed themselves. (Name)
is very good at interacting and being a good companion to others, but he is also great at being his
own friend independently. A secure child is one who can be surrounded with others and be
content, but also by himself and have the same comfort. We believe it does involve with how the
child is raised and with observing (Name), we noticed how he is content with being alone and is
happy when he is with his friends or sister too. When we questioned (Name’s) parents as to how
he is when it comes to group work, they responded with mentioning he is very hard working and
giving and does not depend on other people for his own work. (Name) is usually the leader when
it comes to being included in group works too, he apparently tells his partners what to do and has
them choose on which sections they want to work on. After they choose the sections they want to
work on, (Name’s) group would meet up occasionally and consistently combine their work. We
wanted to see if (Name) was proficient when it came to delayed gratification, so we had a new
toy with us and asked him if he wanted it. Immediately he responded “yes!” with great
enthusiasm and reached out for it, but we mentioned he would to wait for the toy, he became
impatient. After a few minutes when we asked again if he wanted it, he said “yes,” but did not
reach out for it.
Once it was handed to him, he seemed to appreciate the toy more rather than if we gave the toy
to him off hand. We also wanted to show (Name) that when one waits for something, even if it is
not even for a long time, their satisfaction will be bigger and more appreciative of the object than
it would have if we gave it to him first hand. (Name) has outstanding social skills because when
we questioned about his behavior when it came to group work, to him interacting with his friend
(Name) and his sister (Name) he was kind and caring the majority of the time. (Name) was not
self-conscious or shy when he was interacting with others. He likes to participate in group work,
and shows great leadership abilities, even though they are in the fourth grade.
Cognitive Development
The cognitive intellectual development of an eight-year-old is astonishing. In (Name’s)
case, he developed his communication skills. More importantly, he developed stronger
confidence in his reasoning skills. Not only does age factor into this development but his
involvement played a great role as well. Because of his involvement in gymnastics, tennis, and
swimming, his experience with different teammates, coaches and interactions with people around
him, he has a clear understanding of not only time management but telling apart right from
wrong. One aspect his mother finds very interesting about (Name) is the fact that when they go
inside a candy shop, he understands his limits. He does not cry and beg his mother for more and
more candy. “He understands that too much candy is not good for his health.” His cognitive
development also highlights his strengths of being independent as an eight-year-old. As
mentioned above, he has no trouble with being independent. He uses the restroom by himself and
carries out daily tasks without always seeking attention from the people surrounding him. This
possibly could mean two things; either he is holding everything inside (which is not healthy) or
he is genuinely an independent individual. Another explanation might be the fact that he is an
intrinsic child, he is not so social and prefers to be more reserved. It is uncertain which one he
might be, as he is too young and still has a lot of time to develop and grow as an individual.
Conclusion
Concluding the observations and interactions we encountered within this semester
project, (Name) had a very strong personality to observe, he was very energetic and interesting.
Comparing (Name) to the norms of other children, he is similar to the average middle childhood
children. In the article, “9-Year-Old Child Development Behavior and Daily Routines” written
by Katherine Lee, it expresses how “nine-year-old children are also becoming much more
independent and becoming more interested in people and things outside of the immediate
family.” He expressed many moments of interest in others and the activities he involved himself
in. Since he is still maturing, he will be constantly improving and he will only continue to
develop and advance for his future. (Name) is surrounded with loving family members with
very positive morals and respectful views. Observing his father’s actions and how he
immediately taught (Name) that he should express how he feels rather than act out,
demonstrates he has a great support system and they will encourage him to become a better
individual throughout these very sensitive and fast moving years.
