WORKSHEET GUIDELINES
Worksheet project will reveal the importance of identification and putting artworks in context,
(part 1 and 2) and examine connections between artworks executed before and during the
Modern and Contemporary time periods (part 3). Worksheet document has 3 parts.
Worksheet Part 1: Artworks from AHIS 2
One week before your topic is scheduled (check the weekly schedule in the Syllabus), you
need to show worksheet Part 1 document to your teacher for approval.
Worksheet AHIS 2 document is located under the File area of the Canvas navigation menu.
1. In the first column, state which style your artwork belongs to
2. In the second column, provide an example of a visual artwork created within the time
frame of the AHIS 2 course (15th to mid-19th century), which has been created within
that particular style. One of the three artworks is the one you received in the
beginning of the term.
3. In the third column, state whether the artwork was created by an individual or a group
and provide the name(s) of the creator(s), if known.
4. Answer questions regarding the artwork you received in the beginning of the term and
answer both of the following questions:
•
When was this artwork created? What is the medium/material in which this artwork was
executed (i.e. oil on canvas, marble etc.)?
•
Where is its current location? What is its place of origin?
Once the worksheet part 1 is complete bring the paper to your teacher for approval.
Worksheet Part 2: Artwork Chart
This part of the worksheet is a research on the work of art you have already received in the
beginning of the term. Once the worksheet Part 2 Artifact Chart is complete, save the file. The
entire Worksheet document will be submitted on the week of your topic. (Check Syllabus for
weekly schedule)
Worksheet Part 3: Artwork form AHIS 2 and Modern and Contemporary
World
Open worksheet Part 3. Complete the table, addressing the following:
1. In the first column, identify creators from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries who
you think made important contributions to art and culture in the form of humanities visual
artworks that impacted society.
2. Identify one of the artworks they created
3. Identify medium (material) in which selected artworks were executed and exact date of
creation
4. Then, explain why you believe the creator felt the need to express their ideas (in the
fourth column), what was the purpose or intention.
For example, if one of the people you chose was Salvador Dali, you could identify one of his
works of art and discuss how this work of art relates to Sigmund Freud’s theories.
Once you have completed the table, answer the question presented at the bottom of the page:
1. What differences do you notice between the artworks from each era (meaning AHIS 2 and
Modern and Contemporary World)?
2. Reflecting on what you have learned in this theme, where do you think those differences
stemmed from?
3. How relevant your chosen work of art from AHIS 2 still is?
4. Did it have any influence on 20th and 21st century art and architecture?
5. Have its iconic features been repeated often in popular culture? If yes, why and where?
Once the worksheet part 3 is complete, save the file.
Submit your completed worksheet (parts 1,2 and 3 together as a hard copy) for grading on the
week of your topic. (Check Syllabus for weekly schedule)

4. Now, select only one of the three artworks and answer both of the following questions in two
to three sentences:
•
Do you believe the creator was successful in achieving their purpose? Why or why not?
Yes, the individual responsible for creating the Ara Pacis achieved his purpose of constructing a
monument that would immortalize and pay homage to Augustus, by creating an open air alter for
blood sacrifice, the man who created the Pax Romana. This is shown through the artist’s infusion
of the structure with symbolism that reflected the peace, harmony, and fertility that Augustus
was able to bring to the land, reminding audiences that he, above all else, played an important
role in initiating and developing the Roman Peace.
•
How do think this work of art and the culture in which they were created influenced each
other? Explain.
This sculpture is largely only possible as a result of the culture in which it was created. This is
due, first and foremost, to the subject matter of the sculpture, which is a symbolic and historical
representation of Augustus and the Pax Romana. Additionally, the massive sculpture could be
created because of this peaceful time period and the Golden Age of Rome. This provided
opportunities for artwork and sculpture that were previously unseen during times of warfare.
Furthermore, this also influenced the culture of Rome because it served as a place of spiritual
and political homage, such as where respect could be paid to Augustus or sacrifices could be
made for religion.

Worksheet Part 2: Artwork Chart
Artwork
What is your chosen artwork? Include a link to or
a picture of the artwork.
I.
Describe the artwork in detail. For instance,
how would you describe it to someone who
could not see it?
The entire structure is extremely massive in size and
scope. However, despite this monumental nature,
there is a substantial amount of detail within the
sculpture. This is shown through the natural detailing
and relief carving in the lowest frieze. This included
over fifty species of plants. It combined both
symmetrical and linear aspects when detailing the
stems, roots, and leaves of the planets. Furthermore,
on the sides of the monument, there were numerous
carvings of individuals and processions. This
includes a female figure, commonly believed to be
Venus or Mother Earth, who represents fertility.
Additionally, there are numerous highly detailed
figures across the reliefs, each of which is believed to
be someone very specific. This is shown through the
unique detailing on the faces and clothing of each
person. All of these details are constructed in marble
on the outsides of the monument, with an altar placed
in the centermost region.
II.
Choose elements of the artwork that you believe are most important to how you experience it and
explain why. For instance, what particularly catches your senses or makes you want to keep
experiencing it? Does the choice of medium impact your experience?
The choice of medium is extremely influential for the Ara Pacis because it creates a strong weighted
presence. The marble comes across as extremely powerful and strong, despite the carving of numerous
delicate and beautiful images along the sides of the piece. This is an extremely visual and texturized
sculpture. For example, even the carving is done at different depths to create natural shadows that bring
those of importance into a high relief, while those less important are constructed in a low relief in the
background. Additionally, the level of sheer detail across the sculpture is extremely intriguing. Given the
strength of the marble, the carvings are extremely detailed and precise, which ensures the audience can
discern and differentiate between each and every figure carved into the monument. Consequently, this is a
very eye-catching piece, in part, because there is simply so much to focus on.

Assumptions about Your Artwork
III. State your opinion on what you believe is the purpose of this artwork and the success of the
creator in achieving the purpose. For instance, what message do you believe the creator is trying
to express, and is that message successfully expressed?
The purpose of this sculpture was to create a lasting monument that would immortalize Augustus and
permanently link him with the period of Pax Romana. The artist was successful in this purpose because
it is impossible to study the Ara Pacis and not be reminded of both Augustus and Roman Peace.
Furthermore, there are many symbols, such as children, plants, and women, that all serve to represent
aspects of the Pax Romana and Augustus’ reign, such as childbirth, peace, and fertility. As such,
through these aspects, the artist successfully created a sculpture that immortalizes Augustus in an
extremely positive light.
IV. Discuss how the artwork reflects the culture (or context) in which it exists. Be sure to address
what aspects of culture have relevance for this artwork: politics, history, religion, social
perceptions, technology, media, education, and so on. In other words, how do the artwork and its
culture interrelate? For instance, how would a particular form of body modification reflect the
urban culture in which you encountered it?
This sculpture highly reflects the culture and context in which it was created. First, it would not have
been possible to create such a massive sculpture without the Golden Age and period of Roman Peace
that surrounded it. This enabled Rome to refrain from focusing on warfare and once again focus on
techniques related to artwork and sculpture. Additionally, the monument is a testament to the historical,
political, and religious aspects of the time period. It is influenced and reflects the religion or spirituality
of the period by having a sacrificial altar within the very center of the monument. This also represents
Augustus as the Pontifical Maximum, or Head Priest of the State Religion, thereby showcasing how
important religion was within Rome. Next, it also serves to represent the political aspects of the time
period by including numerous symbols that emphasize and represent many of the policies Augustus
worked to form. For example, the children on the side of the monument are meant to reflect Augustus’
perspective toward childbirth and his desire to increase the population of Rome. Furthermore, the
positioning of the altar in the centermost portion of the monument reflects Augustus’ role as the
centralized power within Rome, even above and beyond the Senate.
This sculpture also represents the education within Rome through the unique combination of high and
low reliefs as well as very precise carving techniques. It also demonstrates the importance of marble to
the artwork of the elite. Furthermore, as a whole, the monument also serves as a historical reflection of
the culture and time period of Rome. It includes numerous narrative scenes, including processions, that
represent individuals important to Rome. While it is difficult to identify these individuals in the modern
era given the destruction that has taken place, they nevertheless represent the importance of those
individuals historically.

V.
Use the artwork to discuss how acts of creative expression impact and are impacted by the
people and situations that surround it. How might the artwork and the person who created it have
impacted each other? For instance, how might the geographic location where the artwork was
made, the materials used to create the artwork, the medium of the creative process, or the
environment where the artwork is displayed influence the creator’s life or future creative work?
How might the artwork and the culture or context in which it was created have impacted each
other? For instance, does the artwork add to the understanding of the culture from which it was
created? What contributions does it make to continuing on a dialogue about that culture and the
importance of its artworks?
This monument is the result of numerous influences, ranging from the time period in which it was
created to the man it was created about. Geographically, this piece was created in Rome to serve as a
lasting memory and homage to all that Augustus, Roman Emperor and Pontifical Maximus achieved.
Additionally, the sheer size and scope of the monument demonstrates that it was created for an elite
individually with an extensive amount of finances. The medium from which it was created, marble,
illustrates the transition from the use of brick and concrete to marbleized mediums and forms.
Furthermore, the use of an altar in the center of the monument reflects the sculptures importance to the
spiritual aspects of Rome.
Given all of the important allegorical and mythological symbols and individuals across the sides of the
monument, it quickly becomes apparent that this structure was extremely important and impactful to the
culture of Rome. It serves as a representation of an important time period in their history, the Pax
Romana, which was largely never duplicated. This was a lengthy period of Roman Peace that allowed
for the creation of such massive monuments given the lack of warfare. Consequently, by studying all of
these reliefs and friezes across the monument, it becomes possible for audiences to better understand
Rome as well as the period of peace it experienced.
This sculpture also serves to contribute to the ongoing dialogue about the importance of artwork in
understanding and interpreting a given region’s culture. For example, by studying the scenes and
narratives around the monument, it becomes possible to understand what was most important to Rome
during this time period. It also provides a glimpse into the plant and animal species that were common
around Rome. Furthermore, given the size, it demonstrates the technical skill and detailing of the
artist(s) who worked on it.

VI. Questions: Pose questions you have after thinking deeply about this artwork. What more do you
want to know regarding:
A. The relationship between human culture and expression
Question 1: Can an artist ever mislead audiences and historians by specifically including aspects that
were not part of a society’s culture?
Question 2: Are there are cultural aspects that were off-limits during the period of Rome and could not
be represented in artwork?
C. Your personal assumptions about artworks of this sort and why they exist
Question 1: Do these massive narratives truly immortalize the individual(s) they are about?
Question 2: Do we have any culturally relevant and immortalizing artwork in today’s society?
C.
How your values have shaped and are shaped by your expression and that of others
Question 1: Can what I write and create be looked back on to paint a picture of the person I used to be?
Question 2: What choices do I make on a daily basis that reflect who I am or who I want to be?
E. The relationship between the possible intent of the creator and your own interpretation of its
meaning
Question 1: Did the artist mean for the reliefs on the outskirt of the monument to be closely related to
the altar on the inside?
Question 2: Did the artist intend for every single figure on the monument to be recognizable and
identifiable?
SANTA MONICA COLLEGE
VII. Speculate on how you would go about answering these questions. For instance, what sorts of
things would you study about these kinds of artworks and their contexts that might begin
addressing these questions?
While it is impossible to respond to every question due to the lack of historical knowledge about the
artist who created Ara Pacis, a strong starting point would be to examine more into the history of the
sculpture. This would include a study into how and when it was used. For example, was the altar
involved in human sacrifice? Specific animal sacrifice? Also, it would be interesting to study more
about the culture of Rome right when Augustus returned from battle in Spain and France, before the Pax
Romana truly took hold. By learning more about the culture and history surrounding the creation of the
sculpture, it will be possible to learn more about the sculpture itself.

Answer the following questions: What differences do you notice between the artworks created during the
AHIS 1 timeframe and those from Modern and Contemporary World? In the context of what you have
learned in this course so far, where do you think those differences stemmed from?
How relevant your chosen work of art still is?
Did it have any influence on 20th and 21st century art and architecture?
Have its iconic features been repeated often in popular culture? If yes, why and where?
Arguably, when discussing places of homage, such as the Ara Pacis or a modern mausoleum, the largest
difference is the detailing in the buildings and structures. During the time periods studied throughout this
course, there was often an extreme amount of detailing placed into the burial location or altar site of
important figures. This is shown in numerous cultures ranging from the Egyptians to the Greeks and
Romans. However, while great care is still placed into such structures in the modern period, the twentieth
and twenty-first centuries have a sense of modernity and rigidity to them. There is more of an emphasis on
sleek lines and blank walls, rather than on extensive reliefs and friezes. However, these locations are still
able to convey narratives and stories through the plaques and writings present within them. There is simply
not as much of a pictorial narrative as those shown within the Ara Pacis.
However, despite this lack of detailing, there is still a substantial amount of influence that can be found
from Greek and Roman artwork, such as the Ara Pacis. This is shown through the use of marble and
concrete as a medium as well as the naturalistic depiction of human bodies. Furthermore, given the desire
to learn more about the past, this work of art continues to remain relevant in the modern era. It provides a
window into the culture of the past, just as many individuals might look back on history textbooks to learn
about our own society. Additionally, while the above two examples only represent the beginning, the
iconic features of the Ara Pacis, such as the use of marble and grand sizing, continue to be used in the
present day. This is seen in the locations selected for the burial of some of our nation’s presidents and
important figures as well as more generally within buildings, such as the White House, which is heavily
included by the column work of the Greeks and Romans.
