Assignment Requirements
While the primary purpose of this assignment is for you to think about and work with statistical concepts, it
is important after you complete your writing that you take the time to review and edit it for coherence,
completeness, and grammar. You will be looking at each others work as a resource for your final two
writing assignments. Using a grammar and spelling program such as Grammarly is highly recommended,
as excessive grammar errors and incoherent writing will lower your grade.
Assignment
For this assignment document complete the assignment in the order presented below and organize the
document to look like the example provided.
Find an article about the pandemic that uses statistical analysis as part of the story. The article must be
from a reputable source (a file provided shows what source can be reputable or not) and in English. You
must also be able to identify the data and method used for the statistical analysis either within the article or
through links or citations you can follow to the original analysis. You will then complete the following
four steps of review and critique of the statistics in the article.
1.
2.
3.
4.
Provide general information on the article and the source of the data and statistics being used,
including
o Title of the article,
o Author(s),
o Where it was published (name of publication and
o Publication URL
o Source of the statistical analysis
o Source for the data collection
o URL for detail on the data
o URL for any additional data sources used.
Claim(s) the article is making with the data and statistics
Identify the following key elements of statistics presented:
o Is the article presenting/discussing descriptive or inferential statistics or both? How do
you know the answer to this?
o Is the article using univariate, and/or multivariate data? Provide examples to support
your answer with any explanation needed.
o Is the data used categorical or numerical data? Explain how you know the answer.
o The sample size
o The sampling method/approach
o The population size, and how it was determined and framed
After looking at the data and statistics in more detail name at least 5 concerns or strengths you
think the data and statistics have

Article: Poll: 38\% of College Student Lost Work Because of Coronavirus

Source of the statistical analysis: College Reaction/Axios
Data collected by: College Reaction/Axios
Study Summary: https://collegereaction.com/posts/most-student-jobs-have-been-canceleddelayed-or-digitized-by-coronavirus
Study Detail https://www.scribd.com/document/456474196/College-Reaction-COVID-19Report-2#download
Other data sources referenced: Enrollment and Employees in Postsecondary Institutions, Fall
205; and Financial Statistics and Academic Libraries, Fiscal Year 2015, National Center for
Education Statistics.
Undergraduate student numbers source: https://nces.ed.gov/pubs2017/2017024.pdf
Claim(s) the article is making: The coronavirus outbreak is impacting 75\% of college students
work plans in at least one of the three ways: lost jobs, delayed job start, or move of their jobs to
being remote. This situation is resulting in college students to expressing concern about the
economy.
• Learning is impacted, with most college students not finding distance learning effective.
However only a small fraction would not return to school.
• Stress is increased and social isolation is raising concerns.
• There is a racial discrepancy in who is getting summer jobs, with Asian the majority of
Asian students having jobs, followed by white and Hispanic students. Black students
were the least likely to have summer jobs, however even they were over 50\%.
Statistics Used:
Descriptive or Inferential Statistics: This study presents differential statistics. They do
not present the numbers from their sample, but rather extrapolate their finding out to the
population of U.S. college students. All of the inferences presented are for the entire
population of American college students.
Univariate or multivariate data: The parameters presented on the population in both the
original article and the presentation of the data and analysis are both univariate and
bivariate. An example of the Univariate data presented is “90\% of students are worried
about the impact of the coronavirus outbreak on the job market” (College Reaction, 2020,
p. 3). An example of the multivariate data presented is, “[p]rograms for 73\% of
student[s] who already had internship or post-graduation work arrangements have either
been canceled or moved to remote work” (College Reaction, 2020, p. 3). To get to this
number it is first necessary to separate students who had obtained internship or post
graduate work from those without. Then within the set of those who had these
opportunities they looked at who’s opportunities were either a) canceled or b) moved to
remote work.
Categorical or numerical data: The data in this study is categorical when you examine
how the questions are asked.
Qualitative or Quantitative data: The recording of information is only numbers
responding to each category making the data quantitative.
Sample Size: 822
Sampling Approach: The data collected was designed to be “the most accurate
randomized sample of students at each college” (College Reaction, 2020, p. 6, my
emphasis), and is “weighted by geographic region” (College Reaction, 2020, p. 6),
gender and race (College Reaction, 2020, p. 7).
Population: 17,448,545 The “population” number used is based on the fall 2015 fall
college enrollment numbers for Title IV institutions (those getting federal dollars) from
the National Center for Educational Statistics.
My thoughts on what I am looking at
• The population number that was used appears to be one year behind the most currently
available data from the source they are using for it.
• The population is NOT all undergraduate college students but all undergraduate students
at federally funded institutions.
• A sample of 882 students from a population of 17,448,545 is 0.5\% of the population.
• The study and presentation of the data identifies some demographic differences found
among the college student population that were identified as needing to be represented in
the sample set.
• There is no description of how the sample was randomized, when you start thinking of
the various categories they are discussing, it seems likely that some of the categories are
based on very few students, so I suspect that a change in answers of a few students could
have made a big difference in what they said.
What is a Reputable Source
Determining A Reputable Source
There is a commonly referenced guide for determining reputable sources that will remain important for you
as a professional, as you never want to be embarrassed by sharing inaccurate or false information. That
guide is the CRAAP Test.

Currency: Is the information/article you are looking at recent enough to be relevant. This is not a
specific date but should be examined based on the specific topic (e.g. There is much discussion
going on around the Spanish Flu now, some of which may be relevant -- will our economy ever
recover? -- some may not -- How were patients with the Spanish Flu treated?)
Relevance: Is the information/article about what you are looking for input on? Specific and
focused.
Authority: Does the source of the information/article have expertise on the topic being discussed?
(e.g. Does the person presenting information have expertise to talk about a particular aspect of the
pandemic?)
Accuracy: Is the information based on solid, accurately interpreted, data that is a reasonable
sample for what is being evaluated?
Purpose: Why does the information exist? If the information exists to sell or as propaganda, it
may still be good but you have to ask more questions
Some Specific Resources that can be used for this class: (Articles must be in English)
•
Reputable Newspapers -- What do I mean, while most news outlets are now described as
left- or right-leaning, there is a further distinction that would make them not credible, which is
when their priority becomes to promote a particular message at the expense of fact-checking.)
Reputable sources: The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian
and the Financial Times. (connected to these are the wire services: The Associated Press, Reuters,
Bloomberg News.
Sources to avoid that are known to have a skew right National Review, and The Weekly Standard, and to
the left The New Republic and the Nation.
•
•
Reputable News Magazines - Some examples of these types of Publications: The
Economist, Forbes, Newsday, The Atlantic, The New Yorker, Foreign Affairs,
Online News: Many of the sources above have online material that is well done and credible that
is not in the print publications, but only online. Additionally there are now sources that are
primarily if not totally online (BUT BE CAREFUL):
Reputable sources: Politico, Huffington Post
•
Think Tanks: As with news outlets you need to be careful that the think tanks priority is on welldocumented information and not a political adjenda. The Global Go To Think Tank Index
Report (Links to an external site.) can help with this
Reputable Think Tanks: Brookings Institution, Carnegie Endowment for Internation Peace, Bruegel, Center
for Strategic and International Studies
Think Tanks with Political Agendas: The Heritage Foundation (right) and the Center for American
Progress (left). This is not to say that some good things do not come from these sources BUT your
audience may be more skeptical of their information, and their focus will be to discuss topics and provide
information to support their political agendas.
