Could be I am a swift and stealthy elf or a white wisp that travelers will lull. Whoever wants to be my storys guest, must first agree to join the Warcraft world and seize a role in this immortal quest. I joke, I joke, dont let your head go bald. Oh, I may game after all work is done, but mostly I revolve around the school and value learning way above the fun that comes from partying or being cool. Let us begin then, as the trope dictates, before the glowing screen of a laptop. I browse the internet as swirling fates flash back and forth like patterns on a spinning top. With just a blink, I end up inside the game. Temptation once again opens its eyes, but I am neither fool nor fragile flame that cant sustain a worthy enterprise. Yet, the call of hell is still mighty. Resist! Resist! Do not succumb to sloth! I stand and lean upon the windowsill and wipe my eyes on a discarded cloth. The food arrives, but my attention lies at the pile of work that beckons like a hungry cat. This imagery will not bring on demise unless of course I just made up all that. Once more the evenings work calls out to me, so I again move back to the waiting chair. Now, to write some more in the worn and ragged key while trying not to pull out all my hair. I struggle through a never-ending maze to find a treasure that shall spell success, while weariness attempts to dull my gaze and crush my mind under its heavy press. No matter what, I must complete this task since I made promises to many. I do not want my friends to call and ask: Oh, what was it that made your labors fall? To kneel before professors in great shame and beg forgiveness for a dozen crimes. Such a cruel result shall never do, not at all! As fates once more dance bee-like back and forth, many soon forget my sorry name and this tale ends in such a sad mess of stringed together rhymes. Go on reader, give my words a test! The news annoys me with incessant noise about a plague that will wipe all life clean. I struggle to not lose my strength and poise as time runs out to craft a fresh scene. The honking sounds remind me of angry geese or the fight over a young and charming bride. Might be sweet silence comes upon release, as just one winners life shall sprout inside. Yet this digression may have gone too far, in its quick leap from peak to natures gulch. We must move fast to find the northern star before it turns this shining path to mulch. My mind turns hard to focus on the Zhou 2 page as night attempts to kill the time thats left. Ideas chant like an unstable mage, while I take pains to give the writing heft. Do not give in to those who sell us fear. No matter what, we all shall turn to dust. Death always stands so far and yet so near. All we can do is one another trust. We will endure together through this plight by spreading love and helping those in need. Our efforts will all onlookers delight, because we do not labor out of greed. To keep my mind from focusing on the fact that promises are more than just a bet and represent a strong and solemn pact, I distract myself once more. Again a stream of poison floods my ears, about pandemic that will end the Earth. I gather strength and chase away the fears that howl like demons in a lonely berth. Oh god, I really want to get some sleep before the swift approach of target time. The keys sing of a fight against the deep, to build a story from a simple rhyme. Calliope appears on my bright screen to offer her divine and lovely forms. I take a breath to marvel at the scene and try to maintain established norms. There is no way to stop a heart that wishes to escape its mortal place. Yet I keep trying to perform my part, before the last seconds end this chase. Though we exist within an hourglass that measures out the stages of a play, I still consider what may happen. Even if I do not complete this task today, I still believe this. While destiny and faith might show support, I work instead to forge eternal words. For they resemble warships in a port, forever at the whim of mighty lords. Again the muse enwraps me in her arms. Thus often goes the writers rambling path. Since I agreed to let her smash alarms, I shatter bones and cant suppress a laugh. Her broken form begins to writhe, a bloody sacrifice to brief term cause. Might be that Im turning more insane in a pursuit of glory and applause. This drama must go on as minutes carry the remains away. Euterpe comes to join me in the fun and acts to make these efforts go astray. Her singing flows like water once again, distracting my attention from the goal and windows rattle under pouring rain, while I continue emptying my bowl. Euterpe frowns as I ignore her dance. No one expects to suffer just desserts for tarnishing a job with brief romance. I see her grin and soon forget the work, in swift surrender to an ancient fire. A breath pops out like a broken cork in service to a dark and base desire. Soon tendons snap, and life wanes as body whets its appetites again. Zhou 3 Oh, well, I think there is more time to weave another narrative in here. Imagination can erase all grime and wipe away the scent of blood and fear. The music changes to a dark and heavy song as Melpomene comes down in mourning dress. I stifle a sharp want to sing along or shed a tear at this unpleasant mess. Her dark expression resurrects my fear about not finishing this evenings task. I overcome the desire to cut off ear, and once again adopt the Jokers mask. Leave me alone, oh lady of distress. I have no time to deal with you as well. Do you not know your sisters left a mess when they intruded on my lonely cell? Her silence was a response that plunged me into an unhappy state, which once again evoked the use of force as a final argument in this debate. Guitars crescendo as I tear off wings in a feeding frenzy worthy of the dead. This then another strange dilemma brings, as deadline comes to an untimely head. Oh well, we have passed the turning point I guess, as someone said on that famous day. Who cares that this new tale might be a mess in a galaxy so old and far away. What matters more is that I tried my best to overcome temptation and succeed by not succumbing to desire for rest or always choosing to fulfill a need. Why weep about all the digressive rants? They also are a valid form of prose. Let us move fast to finish off this play, before the morning comes with a sharpened blade. The seventh hour will soon start, as time runs out to cross the finish line. Oh no, I think I am about to fall and strength is in a definite decline. My mind is overflowing with strange sounds which shake its foundations to the core. Somewhere within, the enemy abounds, and promises that I will lose this war. A smell of conflict permeates the dawn while news again intrudes upon my thoughts. In real life nobody can respawn, and solving problems can be difficult. I only hope to be left alone by people that come from the blue and red. The typing wears my fingers to the bone and drills a tunnel through my throbbing head. Maybe this is just the exhaustion speaking with entwined with missing freedom and the beach, but I am not quite sure. Oh god, I joke, please dont destroy my brain. I need it so I can write and learn. The time goes against the grain and let the people’s happiness fade. Why should we let the fear control our lives in a great nation that desires to move? Let gods and demons promise us demise, that will not stop us trying to improve. Perhaps I joke again, no one can tell. That is the draw of a transgressive tale. Each reader can remain inside a cell or let an open mind prevail Writing Assignment 7 Grammar & Grammar-as-Style Part 1: Grammar Choose one or two complicated sentences from your paper 1. Using your comment function, identify the following parts of speech: • verb • subject • object • prepositional phrase • conjunctions (and what parts of speech they combine) Once you have done that, check to see if these sentences include any of the following major grammar errors: • comma splice • sentence fragment • subject-verb agreement error • fused sentence If you do not know what any of the above are, please refer to the slideshow called “Grammar.” Part 2: Working with Style Review the “Grammar as Style” slideshow. Choose a passage from your paper 1 that is about 200 words. Copy and paste this under your part I. Then, using one or all of the techniques on the grammar-as-style slideshow, rewrite every sentence in your passage. Do not change the content of your passage, just change the sentences. All of these experiments with style are just experiments. Your new sentences do not have to be better; they just have to be different. You can use either version of these sentences in your final draft. If you discover that one or more of these principles improves your writing, try using that principle as you edit your paper 1. Remember also that all of these style principles are just guidelines—there will be times when your content does not allow you to follow them. When this happens, remember that content is a higher order concern than style. However, following these style guidelines when you can will make your writing easier to read. When I tell people that I love science fiction, I think they think I mean the kind of science fiction with bombs and aliens and spaceships. This is what most people have in mind. Star Wars. But I mean that I love science fiction from people like Ursula Le Guin. I first read The Left Hand of Darkness on a plane beside my husband while our marriage was falling apart. I read the entire book on our way to Hawaii for vacation—it turned out that the book on the plane was the best part of the vacation. The Left Hand of Darkness is about aliens, and there is a spaceship, and people are in danger. But it isn’t about these things; it is about loneliness. It is about a very specific kind of loneliness, and when I read the book on the plane beside my husband (who is no longer my husband), I felt less alone in my loneliness. Commented [JF14]: This looks like a run-on sentence, but it isn’t. Writers often drop “that” from short sentences, as I have done here. “I think that they think that I mean” It is okay if you do this in your paper, so long as the pieces that you are connecting are short, as they are here. If they get longer, the “that” helps with clarity. is not about aliens and spaceships and danger. It is about loneliness. It is about a very specific type of loneliness. I read this book on a plane to Hawaii beside my husband while our marriage was falling apart.
