Assignment 2-Spring/Summer 2020
Topic: Consequences of Global Warming on Our Planet
Evaluation: 30\%
Read and follow all instructions carefully to avoid losing marks.
Due date: May 31, 2020
Assignment is to be submitted electronically to Quercus (linked to Turnitin) by 11:00 PM.
In October of 2018, the subject of climate change/global warming made headlines around the world with
the release of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Global Warming.
The authors stress that our planet is already experiencing the consequences of 1.0°C warming above pre
industrial levels. Extreme weather occurrences are increasing in intensity and will continue to seriously
affect natural ecosystems, species extinctions, water, agriculture, economies, and human living conditions
if people do not significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The IPCC report emphasizes the critical
need to limit global warming to 1.5°C, because an increase of 2.0°C above pre industrial levels will likely
result in long-lasting changes to our planet that humans will not be able to reverse.
In the fall of 2019, massive climate demonstrations around the world showed humanity’s concerns about
climate change, the lack of action by government leaders to combat global warming, and the dangers of
continuing to use fossil fuels instead of green energy. Global warming is a broad subject, thus for this essay
you need to focus your research on one specific topic. Choose one of the topics listed below.
-
melting/loss of Arctic ice
melting/loss of Antarctic ice
rising sea levels
rising ocean temperature
rising global air temperature
ocean acidification
loss of coral reefs
species extinctions
meat consumption (as it relates to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation)
For this assignment you will examine scientific evidence from a minimum of four primary, peer
reviewed research articles dated between 2016-2020. Your essay should be informative discussion of the
articles you have read, so include scientific facts, specific examples, and discuss key points/examples in
detail. Follow APA format. The length of your essay, excluding the title page and reference page, should be
a maximum of 6 pages, double-spaced and single-sided.

Introduction
Define climate change, global warming and any terms that apply to the specific topic that you have chosen.
Provide background information relevant to your topic. For the introduction section only, in addition to
primary research articles, you may use one reputable secondary source to define terms (for example, a
scientific review paper, articles in magazines such as National Geographic or Scientific American, websites
such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Davis Suzuki Foundation, and United
Nations (UN)). All other references must be primary research articles. Do not reference class notes or use
quotes.
The last sentence of your introduction must be a clear thesis statement. A thesis statement focuses your
ideas and informs readers what your essay is about (main claim about your topic).
Discussion
Your discussion will contain scientific evidence from primary peer reviewed research articles only (no
secondary sources). In your essay you will discuss if the results in your primary research articles link global
warming to human activity. Discuss any associations found between global warming and human activity,
consequences of global warming, and actions needed (see below).
Human activity (in relation to your specific topic) use in-text citations
list the activities of humans (past and current) that have and are contributing to global warming
Consequences of climate change: (in relation to your specific topic) use in-text citations
- what are the current and potential future consequences/repercussions of global warming to natural
ecosystems, species that live in these ecosystems, and humans
- is global warming leading to potential species extinction events
Action needed: (in relation to your specific topic) use in-text citations
- list ways humans can/should attempt to minimize, stop or reverse the negative impacts of global
warming
Conclusion
Using information from your primary research articles (no secondary sources), briefly highlight the
most relevant information about global warming (in relation to your specific topic) and human activities
which have, or will have, far-reaching effects and critical repercussions for living organisms (humans
included) and the health of our planet. Think globally; the conclusion should have a global focus.
References:
Your reference page should include all references that you used, following APA format.
Writing/Communication
Your research-based essay (maximum 6 pages), title page (one page) and reference page (one page), add up
to a maximum length of 8 pages, double-spaced, single-sided (12-point Times New Roman font, 1-inch
margins
Paragraphs must be well structured and coherently organized. Writing must be grammatically correct, you
must use appropriate scientific terminology, binomial nomenclature for species that you are discussing, and
your information must flow logically. Do NOT summarize each scientific paper separately; use all your
sources to write a well-structured and cohesive essay. Essays must be written in third person in your
own words with in-text citations in the introduction, discussion and conclusion. No in-text citations
means plagiarism. Do not use quotes. Assignment must be spell-checked and proofread before
submission.
Dr. Michael Kaler has prepared a presentation posted on Quercus on how not to plagiarize and how to
improve your writing skills; please review these tutorials before you submit your assignment.
Formatting
Your assignment must follow APA7 format. All writing must be double-spaced.
Make sure you use the headings Introduction, Discussion and Conclusion in your essay. In your
Discussion, make sure you have separate paragraphs when discussing Human Activity Linked to Global
Warming, Current and Potential Consequences of Global Warming, and Actions Needed to Combat Global
Warming.
A rubric will be provided prior to the due date; print out the rubric and attach it to your assignment; it is the
last page of your assignment.
Late Submissions.
Forget to submit to Quercus/Turnitin: late penalty of 10\% per day, or partial day, for 3 days; after 3 days,
submissions are no longer be accepted (the time submitted to Quercus will determine the late penalty).
Policies regarding submission of Assignments to Turnitin:
Normally, students will be required to submit written assignments to Turnitin for a review of textual
similarity and detection of possible plagiarism. In doing so, students will allow their assignments to be
included as source documents in the Turnitin.com reference database, where they will be used solely for the
purpose of detecting plagiarism.
The University of Toronto allows students to opt out of the requirement to submit papers to Turnitin. If
students choose not to submit a paper to Turnitin, students will be required to inform the Professor or TA a
minimum of one week before the submission date that they wish to opt out of Turnitin. On the date of
submission, students will be required to provide the TA (or the Professor) with a document, submitted
along with your essay, that includes a) a statement explaining why you wish not to submit your paper to
Turnitin.com, b) all the earlier drafts of your essay, and c) annotations of your references (statement about
their content and how they are relevant to your paper). In addition, you may be interviewed about your
writing process and asked to submit reference material used.
ON ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
Academic integrity is essential to the pursuit of learning and scholarship in a university, and to ensuring
that a degree from the University of Toronto Mississauga is a strong signal of each student’s individual
academic achievement. As a result, UTM treats cases of cheating and plagiarism very seriously.
The University of Toronto’s Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters outlines behaviours that constitute
academic dishonesty and the process for addressing academic offences. Potential offences include, but are
not limited to:
In papers and assignments:
1. Using someone else’s ideas or words without appropriate acknowledgement.
2. Submitting your own work in more than one course without the permission of the instructor.
3. Making up sources or facts.
4. Obtaining or providing unauthorized assistance on any assignment.
On tests and exams:
1. Using or possessing unauthorized aids.
2. Looking at someone else’s answers during an exam or test.
3. Misrepresenting your identity.
In academic work:
1. Falsifying institutional documents or grades.
2. Falsifying or altering any documentation required, including (but not limited to) doctor’s notes.
With regard to remote learning and online courses, UTM wishes to remind students that they are
expected to adhere to the Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters regardless of the course delivery
method. By offering students the opportunity to learn remotely, UTM expects that students will
maintain the same academic honesty and integrity that they would in a classroom setting. Potential
academic offences in a digital context include, but are not limited to:
Remote assessments:
1. Accessing unauthorized resources (search engines, chat rooms, Reddit, etc.) for assessments.
2. Using technological aids (e.g. software) beyond what is listed as permitted in an assessment.
3. Posting test, essay, or exam questions to message boards or social media.
4. Creating, accessing, and sharing assessment questions and answers in virtual “course
groups.”
5.
Working collaboratively, in-person or online, with others on assessments that are expected
to be completed individually.
All suspected cases of academic dishonesty will be investigated following procedures outlined in the Code
of Behaviour on Academic Matters. If you have questions or concerns about what constitutes appropriate
academic behaviour or appropriate research and citation methods, you are expected to seek out additional
information on academic integrity from your instructor or from other institutional resources.
Academic Integrity:
Plagiarism and/or cheating are unacceptable.
The code of Behaviour on Academic Matters states that:
The University and its members have a responsibility to ensure that a climate that might encourage, or
conditions that might enable, cheating, misrepresentation or unfairness not be tolerated. To this end all
must acknowledge that seeking credit or other advantages by fraud or misrepresentation, or seeking to
disadvantage others by disruptive behaviour is unacceptable, as is any dishonesty or unfairness in dealing
with the work or record of a student.
- University of Toronto Mississauga Academic Calendar
It is your responsibility as a student at the University of Toronto, to familiarize yourself with, and adhere
to, both the Code of Student Conduct and the Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters.
This means, first and foremost, that you should read them carefully.
• The Code of Student Conduct is available from the U of T Mississauga website (Registrar >
Academic Calendar > Codes and Policies) or in your print version of the Academic Calendar.
• The Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters is available from the U of T Mississauga website
(Registrar > Academic Calendar > Codes and Policies) or in your print version of the Academic
Calendar.
• Another helpful document that you should read is How Not To Plagiarize, by M. Proctor.
Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre:
Students can visit the Academic Skills Centre to consult with one of its strategists about understanding
learning style, developing study plans for upcoming tests/exams, or discussing papers. Special Diagnostic
Assessments are also offered and are designed to help you learn exactly where you stand with respect to
critical academic skills.
