Formatting Requirements: must be double spaced and properly formatted as per the sample
paper on OWL Purdue (click here to access link). Assignments that do not follow these guidelines
will be docked 3 marks.
Submission Requirements: Assignments must be submitted as .doc, .docx, or .rtf files. You must
follow the naming convention outlined on the syllabus. You must also submit a copy of the
article used for part two as a PDF.
Word Count: 1400-1500 words, excluding works cited entries
Please note: Your assignment will not receive higher than a C- if you do not meet
the minimum word count requirements.
Value: 20\%
Objective:
This assignment will help you develop the following skills: identifying appropriate articles for a
research essay and finding a source from a citation.
Your examination of the articles that you select should also remind you of
• the importance of citation in scholarly work
• the purpose of citations (aside from avoiding plagiarism)
• the role or function that sources play in building an argument (and why it is important to
choose specific sources to cite for relevant reasons), and
• the conversational nature of scholarly communication, which can happen as agreement
or disagreement between scholars
~Assignment guidelines start on the next page~
The Task (20 marks):
Part 1 (5 marks; max 500 words total)
Using the library database, find 5 academic articles* that help to answer your research question.
One of the articles must cite the other (please review the video on the mechanics of the
research conversation for more details). This will become relevant in part three.
For each article, write a short paragraph that
□ Introduces the article (title and author)
□ Summarizes the thesis statement/argument of the article in your own words with in-text
citations as required (one sentence)
□ Explains how the article answers your research question (in 2-4 sentences)
* An article is academic (or scholarly) if it’s been peer-reviewed or published in scholarly journal.
You can find these articles using the COTR Library database or Google Scholar. However, not
every article available through those sources are academic.
Part 2 (5 marks; max. 250 words)
Write a rhetorical precis for one (1) of the articles that you located for part one.
Part 3 (10 marks; max 650–750 words)
Write a well-organized and cohesive research conversation essay that includes the following:
□ An Introduction that
a) Clearly indicates your initial research question and how/if youve adapted your
question after conducting preliminary research.
b) Briefly describes the academic conversation surrounding your topic, referring to
the research you have completed thus far.
c) States how your research question will put you in a position to contribute
meaningfully to the conversation (i.e. how your approach is different).
□ A paragraph that focuses on the article used for part two (the precis) and includes the
following information:
a) An analysis and discussion of how the author uses sources to prove their
argument. You need to provide specific examples, demonstrating your overall
familiarity with and comprehension of the article and its argument.
b) An analysis and discussion of what the references to specific sources tells you
about the specific academic conversation(s) that this article is contributing to.
c) What the use of sources and citations in this article tells you about the function of
citations in developing an academic argument? Be specific and provide concrete
examples that analyse and reference the use of sources in the article.
Instructions for part three continue on the next page →
□ A paragraph that discusses
a) What the articles you located and summarized for part one tell you about the
evolution of this specific research conversation over time. For this prompt, you
will need to discuss what you observed from reading the five articles. You are also
required to identify which of your five articles cites another article from your
work in part one and what this reference tells you about the research
conversation and its development.
b) A final sentence that reiterates how your essay will develop and/or interact with
the research conversation as defined through your responses to the previous
prompts.
Part Four:
□ A works cited list that includes properly formatted (i.e. follows current MLA guidelines)
entries for all 5 articles
Part Five:
□ Submit a PDF copy of the article you have chosen to write the precis on.
Please note: You will fail the rhetorical precis portion of the assignment your precis misses a
step. Similarly, you may fail the analysis portion of the assignment if you do not complete all of
the required steps (this will be at the discretion of the instructor and will depend on number of
steps missed, overall quality of the assignment, etc.).
In addition, your assignment will fail if
• You do not select appropriate secondary sources. Your articles MUST come from peerreviewed, scholarly journals. There are no exceptions for this assignment
• If there is no bibliographic link between two of your articles. One of your articles MUST
cite the other.
• If you plagiarize.
• If the grammar/spelling/sentence structure within the paper is such that the reader must
re-read sentences in an attempt to understand the argument and/or there are significant
grammatical issues in 30\% or more of the assignment.
The Usual Caveats:
Papers with significant and disruptive sentence and grammatical errors throughout the
assignment (e.g. errors that impede my ability to understand your argument the first time I read
it) will not receive higher than a D and may fail.
Any evidence of plagiarism (including improper paraphrasing) will result in an F on your paper,
and perhaps even a 0, depending on the severity of the offence. Please note: Assignments that
fail due to plagiarism cannot be resubmitted or rewritten, although I am more than happy to
discuss how you can learn from your errors and avoid making them in the future.
Instances of intentional or egregious plagiarism will be reported to student services for further
investigation/penalties. Remember, not putting your quotes into quotation marks with an in-text
citation constitutes plagiarism, as does neglecting to provide in-text citations for paraphrasing
(and if you do paraphrase, make sure the resulting sentence is written in your own words!). I will
check your assignment for plagiarism if necessary.
