COUN5007 Unit 6 Quantitative Mini-Proposal - Humanities
Assignment DescriptionAs a counselor, you will regularly use professional literature to inform your work. Many of the important questions that you will have as your career evolves will be answered by researchers conducting quantitative studies. The quantitative designs help generate the knowledge base that becomes the evidence behind our best practices. For this assignment, you will create a mini-research proposal for a quantitative study. As you work through the units relevant to quantitative research concepts, think through a possible quantitative study. Your work on this assignment will demonstrate that you understand the importance of the alignment of the elements of a study and how they work together.Assignment Instructions and Grading CriteriaIn preparation for this assignment, think about a problem in counseling practice that could be researched using a quantitative approach. Create a mini research proposal that addresses the problem that you identified. Your proposal must include the elements listed below the numbered grading so be sure to address each point. You may also want to review the performance level descriptions for each criterion in the Quantitative Mini-Proposal Scoring Guide to see how your work will be assessed: Synthesize scholarly literature that supports the study of a research problem. Write a mini literature review of three recent empirical sources (required) and one non-empirical source (optional).Create quantitative research questions that are aligned to a research problem. This specific question should be written in a way that it could be answered through quantitative data; this is the main question that will be answered by the proposed study. Identify any independent and dependent variables.Identify research designs for quantitative studies.Identify the research design for the proposed study.Choose from correlational, experimental, quasi-experimental, time-series, and survey.Provide a rationale as to why this particular design is a good fit for your study.Employ appropriate sampling strategies for quantitative studies. In a sampling plan describe your proposed sampling strategy, including the population from which the sample would come and how many participants you would include.Plan data collection strategies and sources that address a research question.Identify data collection strategies that you would use in your study and describe any instruments that you would use.Explain how you would collect the quantitative data that would answer your research question.Plan quantitative data analysis strategies.Explain how you would analyze the data that you collected based upon your research question and type of data that will be collected.Identify ethical and cultural concerns in quantitative studies.Identify at least one ethical and at least one cultural concern that may be present in the proposed study.Describe how mixed methods might be applied to address research problems.Describe how the problem that you investigated might be addressed by using a mixed-methods approach.Explain whether you believe that would be a stronger approach or not, in this particular situation.Communicate effectively in appropriate form and style, using APA guidelines for grammar, punctuation, and mechanics.Submission RequirementsWritten communication: Written communication is free of errors that detract from the overall message.Length: 4–6 pages, not counting cover page and reference pageNumber of references: Minimum of three peer-reviewed empirical journal articles that are no more than seven years old.APA Style: Include a reference page in the current APA style at the end of your paper.Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point quantitative_mini_proposal_scoring_guide.pdf cf_coun5007_u6a1_template__2_.docx Unformatted Attachment Preview 5/24/2020 Quantitative Mini-Proposal Scoring Guide Quantitative Mini-Proposal Scoring Guide Due Date: End of Unit 6 Percentage of Course Grade: 25\%. An effective introduction prepares the reader by identifying the purpose of the paper and providing the organization of the paper. Note, however, that this paragraph does not have a heading; its position at the beginning of the body of the paper indicates that it is the introduction. Instead, keep the title of your paper centered at the top of the page, not bolded. In the body of your paper, indent the first line of each paragraph. Double-space throughout (with no extra spaces between paragraphs) and use 12-point Times New Roman. For the purposes of this assignment, simply replace this text with a brief paragraph in your own words stating what this paper will cover, thus introducing the reader to what will follow. Mini Literature Review In this section, you will create a brief review of the scholarly information for found concerning your topic. Your review should describe any important concepts involved with your topic, as well as describe the results others studies have reported when studying your topic. Per the assignment instructions, you should review at least three empirical articles (required) and one non-empirical article (optional). This section should be at least 2-3 paragraphs. Quantitative Research Questions In this section, you will identify the quantitative research question(s) utilized to guide the proposal. You are only required to identify one research question, but you may include more than one if you choose. When drafting your research question(s), please ensure that the language aligns with the intended methodology (quantitative should include assessing for differences or relationships while qualitative should include an experience of a phenomenon). For quantitative research questions, be sure to identify any independent and dependent variables. Keep in mind Running head: [BRIEF VERSION OF THE TITLE, ALL CAPS] 3 that the rest of your proposal should outline how you will conduct your research to answer the identified research question noted here. This section should be approximately one paragraph. Quantitative Research Design In this section, identify and describe the specific design you have chosen to conduct your research study. You may choose from the following quantitative design options: correlational, experimental, quasi-experimental, time-series, or survey. After identifying the design you intend to use, you need to provide a rationale as to why this design is the best fit for your topic. This section should be approximately one paragraph. Quantitative Sampling Strategy In this section, describe your proposed sampling plan and intended sampling strategy. Specifically, be sure to identify and describe the population for your study, including characteristics such as age, gender, ethnicity, position/status, or any other defining attributes. You will also need to provide details as to how you will select your sample from this population, and how many participants you plan to include in your sample. This section should be approximately one paragraph. Quantitative Data Collection In this section, you will identify the type of quantitative data you plan to collect for your study and your plan to collect it. Specifically, you will need to identify any instruments you will use and how you will use them. For example, will you use a depression inventory to measure levels of depression and collect it using an online survey? Remember, the type of data you collect should be directly related to the research question you identified above for your study. This section should be approximately one paragraph. Quantitative Data Analysis Running head: [BRIEF VERSION OF THE TITLE, ALL CAPS] 4 For this section, identify and describe how you will analyze the data once it is collected. Specifically, identify the statistical analysis you will use to answer your research question(s) based upon the intent of the research question and the type of data you collected. Remember, there are group differences analyses (like t-test or ANOVA) and relationship analyses (like correlation or regression) to choose from. This section will be approximately one paragraph. Ethical and Cultural Concerns In this section, identify and describe the ethical and cultural concerns that might be present in the study you are proposing. Per the assignment instructions, be sure to identify at least one potential ethical concern and how it could be addressed as well as at least one potential cultural concern and how it could be addressed. This section should be approximately 1-2 paragraphs. Mixed-Methods Alternative In this final section, describe how your topic might have been studied using a mixedmethods approach. Specifically, note what would look different about the study if you incorporated the components of a mixed-methods design. Also, be sure to explain if you believe a mixed-methods design would be a stronger approach and why or why not. This section will be approximately one paragraph.
