Thesis-driven, Final Exam Essay Assignment,
2020 May, 7th Grade, Mr. Klaiber, INSTRUCTIONS
William Shakespeares A Midsummer Nights Dream
For the highest grade possible the student must read this entire document prior to starting. Mr.
K. would read it aloud if he were you. Read it as if in class, and maybe to a parent OR to the
family dog. (Some dogs will of course earn detention--thats normal.)
This essay will naturally feel like a project, students, but please dont overthink it. Maybe even
start your first draft right away (after reading this entire doc.)! Some will want to carefully plan
the essay first; others will do best to just roll ahead, start typing on a fresh new blank Google
document, and then afterwards complete several, careful editing/proofreading rewrites over
several different days. (Its very exciting to read your own work afresh and catch your own prior
mistakes!) For the best grade possible the student must read this entire document prior to
starting.
List of strict requirements (Diligent students will treat these like a checklist. If you havent
completed each, do not check it off.):
_____ Essay must be typed as a Google Doc only. (Google doc ONLY. No WORD, no PDFs, no
handwriting.)
_____ Submit your finished essay to both our Google Classroom AND to TurnItIn.com.
_____ Correctly use five of our English class vocab terms (strictly required). Any terms from
lists one through ten.
_____ MLA formatting is strictly required (e.g., double-spaced, heading, running head, no
absurd spacing between or among paragraphs, etc.) Pls see website if questions:
https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/
_____ WHen proofreading your essay, you, the author, must click on and fix every squiggly blue
line generated by Google Docs software. Squiggly lines of any color usually indicate mistakes.
The software alerts the writer, providing easy opportunities to improve skill, communication, and
grade. Unaddressed squiggles submitted to Mr. K. will automatically lower the students grade.
_____ Each of the essays five paragraphs must have the following: ≥6 words per
sentence, ≥6 sentences per paragraph.
_____ No fluff allowed. (e.g., “I hoped you liked my story,” The End, or I am going to write
an essay.)
_____ For the best grade possible the student must continue to read this entire document prior to
starting.
_____ The required thesis statement (which includes claim, because, X,Y, and Z) should be the
last sentence of the first paragraph. In yellow highlight color (not text color), the student must
highlight her thesis statement (using the Google docs software highlight feature).
_____ In bright light blue highlight color (not text color), the student must highlight each of his
outside sources quotations or excerpts.
_____ In orange highlight color (not text color), the student must highlight each of his or her five
vocabulary words.
_____ Did you use Times New Roman, size 12 throughout?
_____ Did you risk the health of your teachers brain cells by using the Arial font in your running
head? :-| (Emoji isnt smiling.)
Remember:
_____ One of the students most baleful enemies is the run-on sentence (grammar ch. 1). When
clauses are joined by a comma or space, grades fall. Clauses are most often properly separated by
periods, or em dashes, or semicolons.
_____ A paragraph is often a section of prose (or writing) usually centered on one subject. You
knew that!
_____ This formal final exam essay must be written in third-person POV. The POV must stay
consistent throughout. No saying I, we or our. Do not address the reader as you, your, or
yourselves.
How long will this essay take? Several hours, hopefully over the course of a few days.
Overall, please plan on two-to-five minutes roughly for every sentence of writing. Again, this
will feel like an important project, students.
_____ Uploading the finished doc twice takes time. Late penalties will be applied. Do not
procrastinate. Expect some things to go wrong. You are proactive, self-reliant, and trustworthy,
yes? :-)
It is permissible to use Grammarly.com for this essay. (Grammarly works like a tutor--it does not
help students to cheat.)
_____ For the best grade possible the student must finish reading this entire document prior to
starting.
If you do not know, or you need help, please ask Mr. Klaiber in advance by email OR search it
online. Do not post questions for Mr. K. on GC and hope he finds them.
_____ Students must take enjoyable pride in their work on this one. Outright satisfaction and fun
are suggested but optional.
_____ TurnItIn.com will check for cheating/plagiarism/dirtydog deception. Cheating is wrong
and dishonorable and violates Gods commandments--maybe thats why Mr. K. almost never has
students who commit that sin.
Remember: Accomplished author, George Orwell, who was once a seventh grader, is purported
to have said, If people cannot write well, they cannot think well. If they cannot think well,
others will do their thinking for them.
Finally, (Where are the prompts, Mr. K.?) each student must choose one of the following essay
topics on A Midsummer Night’s Dream and compose a five-paragraph, thesis-driven essay
addressing the prompt. The student must incorporate three specific details and three quotes from
the play in his or her essay. Essay must be written in formal tone and in MLA format.
1. Although A Midsummer Night’s Dream is categorized as one of Shakespeare’s comedies,
much has been written about the darker side of this play including some of terrible ways the
characters treat one another. Identify three separate instances in which the play is dark and
discuss why each instance is tragic. Integrate at least three quotes in support of your answer.
2. After reading Act V of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, how is the laborers’ play-within-a-play
(Pyramus and Thisbe) similar to the outer play? Identify three similarities between the playwithin-a-play and the outer play and explain why they are important to the overall plot.
Integrate at least three quotes in support of your answer.
3. Shakespearean scholars have sometimes argued that Oberon is the root of all problems in the
play. Either describe three separate ways that his actions altered the outcome of the plot and
why each instance was so important. Integrate at least three quotes in support of your answer.
4. Write a quote (with author and page number in parentheses per MLA requirements) from the
play which was among the most meaningful. Explain who said it, what it means and why it was
so noteworthy a quote (for instance, how does it connect to major themes within the play?).
Connect that quote to at least three other quotes in support of your answer.
5. Explain the importance of the title of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Identify three ways the
title connects to the plot or themes within the play. Upon completion of the play, does the
title have more importance than at first glance? Integrate at least three quotes in support of
your answer.
6. Compare Shakespeares play to a present-day romantic comedy” (book or movie) and find
several parallels between them. For example, you may focus on themes the two share, or similar
plotlines, or conflicts, characters, or endings. These should not be “stretches” (i.e. don’t just pick
any romantic comedy), choose one that strongly reminds you of A Midsummer Night’s Dream!
Integrate at least three quotes in support of your answer.
7. Identify and describe irony found in the play. Irony is when the last thing that one would
expect to happen, does. You can either choose one instance and analyze it deeply or choose
three instances of irony to analyze. Support your answer with textual evidence from A
Midsummer Night’s Dream and incorporate at least three quotes in support of your answer.
8. Find the three instances in the play that most have both a literal and symbolic meaning. This
means that there is a deeper meaning to an event that occurs in the play. You could also consider
objects that serve as symbols in the novel. Integrate at least three quotes in support of your
answer.
9. Is this play truly timeless? Is the love portrayed among the four lovers is similar to love
among teens today (that times have remained unchanged)? Convince the reader by providing
three examples of ways that love (as perceived in the play) relates to love today. Integrate at least
three quotes in support of your answer.
