3 question about diet sustainability - Science
INSTRUCTIONS: Choose one of the following diets (Mediterranean diet, vegetarian, veganism, Keto diet, Okinawa diet) and research it in regards to general premise/ nutrient intake pattern, health outcomes and environmental sustainability. For each question you must triangulate data sources – that means to validate the data through the cross verification of multiple sources, therefore, a minimum of three sources for EACH question (or part of the question) is required.Use ONLY current (2010+) scholarly peer-reviewed articles to answer the followingQ1. Explain the general premise of the diet and its nutrient intake pattern Q2. Explain the main documented (i.e. based in scientific testing and found in peer-reviewed scholarly sources) health outcomes of the diet. You must include one positive and one negative documented health outcome. Be sure to triangulate your sources. Q3. Sustainable diets are those with low environmental impacts (e.g. low carbon emissions, low ecological and water footprint etc.) that contribute to food and nutrition security and to a healthy life for present and future generations. Explain the sustainability of the diet in question.Quality of research /triangulation of sources: Use of current (2010+), multiple, varied, scholarlypeer-reviewed sources and the triangulation of these sources. DIET SUSTAIN ASSIGNMENT REMINDERS & QUESTIONS
• None of the information in the diet sustainability assignment can be based in
opinion, therefore EVERY SINGLE SENTENCE MUST BE CITED. If a
sentence is not cited correctly or not cited at all – it does not count toward
your grade.
• You are not to use ANY direct quotes, but are to paraphrase.
1.Q: What does the triangulation of sources mean?
A: As the instructions state - triangulation of sources means to validate the data
(or your answer) through the cross verification of multiple points of evidence, in
this case current, varied, peer-reviewed scholarly sources, to answer the questions
asked.
Reminder: If you have multiple sources per sentence, which is required for the diet
sustain assignment, you will need to order them by publication year, either most
recent to oldest or vice versa (e.g. Jones & Smith 2020; Alfred & Boss 2018; Smith
& Brown 2016), or alphabetically, e.g. (Alfred & Boss 2018 Smith & Brown 2016;
Zeeb & Grant 2014) – just be sure to be consistent throughout the assignment.
2.Q: We must use a minimum of three sources for each Q, but does that mean that
the same source can be used for another question? Do we have to use 3 new
sources for each question?
A: You need to use as many sources as it takes to answer the question asked,
while triangulating your sources. For example, questions 1 and 3 would need
at least three sources each, while Q2 requires 3 sources to back up a positive
health outcome and 3 sources to back up the negative outcome (e.g.
epidemiological studies). Obviously the more evidence you have to back a
claim - the better. You may be able to use one or two sources for another
question, but a lack of exploration of the varied sources will lose you marks.
See the assignment instructions = Quality of research /triangulation of
sources: Use of current (2010+), multiple, varied, scholarly peer-reviewed sources
and the triangulation of these sources. (3 pts)
3.Q: What does the general premise of the diet mean?
A: General premise of the diet = an explanation of the basis of the argument /
purpose or idea behind the diet
4.Q: What does the nutrient intake pattern mean?
A: Nutrient intake pattern must focus on the big picture. For example: the average
adequacy of dietary energy in relation to a healthy diet and the amount of various
necessary nutrients and fibre present in the diet in comparison to the
recommendations by Health Canada’s food guide.
5.Q: How long should the answer to each question be?
A: Always quality over quantity. You must be sure to answer the question asked
and address all aspects of the question asked.
DO NOT MAKE THE READER GO LOOKING FOR THE ANSWER TO THE
QUESTION.
Answers must be organized and concise
Your explanation for each question may depend on which diet you have chosen. A
proper explanation of what is required for Q1 and Q2 may take a small
paragraph, perhaps 1/3 to 1/2 of a page, but it depends on which diet. Q3. has
more points allotted to it so it will obviously take more space to explain (e.g.
1/2 to 3/4 page).
ANT 214 CITATION GUIDELINES
ALL information utilized must be cited in-text (i.e. lectures, journal articles, films etc.) AND listed on a
separate reference page for assignments. In other words, if you are not making a personal statement (‘I
think…’) – you will need to cite. The following is a simplified version of APA style. THE FOLLOWING FORMAT IS
TO BE USED IN ALL ANT 214 ASSIGNMENTS FOR IN-TEXT CITATIONS AND FORMATTING YOUR REFERENCE LIST. If
you have any questions, please ask! Plagiarism is a serious offence.
FOR IN-TEXT CITATIONS FORMAT AS FOLLOWS:
For a citation at the end of a sentence:
• For citing one author = (Smith 2015) – with or without a comma (Smith, 2015) is fine.
• For citing 2 authors = (Smith & Brown 2016).
• For citing more than 2 authors = (Smith et al. 2017). DO NOT include all the authors for in-text
citations.
OR at the beginning of a sentence:
• Smith (2015) states...
• Smith and Brown (2016) state...
• Smith and colleagues (2017) state... (“and colleagues” or “and coworkers” is to be used within a
sentence instead of “et al.”).
TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING:
• Avoid the use of direct quotes - paraphrase instead. If you must use a direct quote, you are required to
use quotation marks and include a page number, formatted as follows: Smith (2016:23).
•
Cite EITHER at the end OR at the beginning of a sentence (as above) NOT BOTH.
•
If you have multiple sources per sentence e.g. (Smith & Brown 2016; Alfred & Boss 2018), order them
alphabetically, OR by publication year – just be consistent throughout the assignment.
•
Personal discussions cannot be retrieved by others so this info is not included on your reference page,
BUT must be referenced in-text. For example: (A. Judge, pers. comm., Mar 18, 2020).
•
Punctuation goes AFTER the citation.
•
Footnotes and endnotes are NOT permitted.
FORMAT FOR REFERENCES CITED
• Record references cited in ALPHABETICAL ORDER by author’s last name.
• Make sure you include ALL the information found below (i.e. include all authors & do not abbreviate).
• Have a space in between each citation.
• DO NOT use bullet points or numbers and /or indent references cited.
Example of format for a Book:
Crowther G. 2018. Eating Culture: An Anthropological Guide to Food, 2nd edition. Toronto, ON, University of
Toronto Press.
